The new boards are barely compatible with my browser, have broken the formatting on all my guides, and are quite hard for my old eyes to read with regularity. It's been a good run, but it looks like my presence here will be reduced to a cursory one.
Does anyone have any suggestions about where to set up kip so that I can max out the number of friendly faces? Maybe BG?

Probably. Even so, this place is important to many of us. I doubt I'll leave, but I might if it stays like this. It pains my eyes, is full of bright colours, stupid pictures and generally looks like a forum for Powerpuff Girls more than a proper D&D forum for the collective might of it's masters' knowledge and wit.

I hear you and have been having very similar thoughts. But don't throw in the towel yet. They've had a rocky transition; no question about that. I'm not happy either--on many, many fronts. I definitely think that BG is a somewhat reasonable alternative; I also think we should give them a chance to process our pain before we completely break camp.

This new format is killing me too. I haven't dared to have a look at any of the guides yet, but since I intend to continue, and perhaps finish, the most recent thread of mine I will have to see how bad things truly are now.
The new boards are new. I'd give them a bit of time to settle - maybe a month or so - before abandoning them altogether.
Not that complaints aren't justified. It would have been nice to receive a bit more warning, such that important threads could have been manually preserved by forumites lest they be affected by the change over.

It has been 3 days and one major complaint has been removed (the huge side bars). This tells me that the complaints are being listened to and I would give it at least a couple of weeks to make the decision to leave.

+1. It came to me as a total surprise. And now there isn't even a decent "print thread" option.
I'm abhorred by the new forums, too, but I'll give it a few weeks before abandoing the place altogether. After all, other forums have their own issues, too.
a lot of us moving were around for the transition into gleemax from the old boards, and had the exact same issues (a large number of which were never fully fixed, white-screen-of-death I'm looking at you), and then the G0 reorganization that caused even more issues. At this point, I'm tired of having to use google-cache to read things I preferred.
Well, I won't be leaving, I'll just be moving my guides over. Mostly due to the hilariously painful breakage of the BBcode. I like you guys too much to vacate permanently. 
There's a lot I don't like about the boards, but they have been fast, and I haven't run into any weird downtime yet. I'm going to be here as my usual helpful self, but the guides :: whimper ::

Hmmm...actually, it appears the guides on BG are screwed up too. It appears that Dan2 linked the emoticons to WotC so they are all messed up. I've PM'd him, hopefully he will fix them up.
My guides are still for the most part readable, as I get used to these boards I'll start fixing them up.

The community at BG is different. More like it was here 2-3 years ago. Personally, I'm a bigger fan of our community here now.

I dislike the changes like many, but WotC people are supposedly working on fixing the BBcodes. I doubt it's quite at the top of their list though, so I'm not sure how long we'll have to wait.
I do think "Wait & see" is the best approach right now. It's not a bad idea to use Google Cache to save HTML versions of your favourite guides though - I've done it for a few pages myself.
I do think the wiki is a nice touch - the previous CO wiki never quite took up because too few people were interested in it. We have an opportunity to do better here... though it may be too late given the huge amount of 3.5 guides and the relatively low frequentation here.
The 4E CharOp people have set up a group - we could do the same. I'm hesitant to do so myself because while the admin load is probably low, it exists, and I'm not around that often anymore.

1) Did everybody lose their signatures? I'm not happy about this (due to the no warning).
2) How do we add/edit our forum signatures now?

On a side note, would there be interest in a more permanent forum area for your handbooks? In other words, I own and have the ability to create community/forums from the ground up using solid tools (I'd rate the forum function as quite a bit better than these, not quite as good as the gleemax version, but faster than gleemax), and one of the things I can do is add a permanent handbook area (along with some other more permanent "D&D how to/help" sections). My first focus would be 3rd/3.5 edition section as that's my personal current area of interest, though there will be more additions as I progress. I would not be integrating blogs/homepages/chat out the gate (you will have a profile page, and messaging capability), but those would be in the works later. I'm not planning on setting this up overnight, but it's one of the things on my to do list down the road. Amongst other features, I can give prominant forum users (such as treantmonk or other regular users) the ability to moderate a thread category such as the handbooks section, without giving forum wide moderator capability. Again, I'm not in a huge hurry. The whole forum area will be attached to (but segregated from) a larger existing website/network (I own) dealing with various pop culture/entertainment areas such as RPG's, comic books, etc.
Thoughts are welcome - just trying to get a feel, and your handbooks would be a welcome addition. I'll still be using these forums (because I am a life-long fan of the game - particularly 3.5), but I'll likely be adding my own forums (and tools) in the not-too-distant future.

When I use the preview button on a forum post, the HTML code becomes visable to me for a short while. If that happens for you too and you want to avoid learning HTML, you could
create your signature in the post editor,
click preview,
click in the box with the html,
select ( ctrl a ),
copy ( ctrl c ),
cancel the post,
navigate to preferences
and paste ( ctrl v ) the HTML in the signature box.

All the groups really do is give you a lot of the functionality that the boards now have as a whole (forums, blogs, wikis, etc...) and let you create what amounts to sub-communities where you control them.
As an example, the group could have forums that were broken out into Theoretical Optimization and Practical Optimization, there could be a CO games forum, a guidebook development forum, etc... The wiki could have optimized NPCs, optimized characters, guides, and other items that we wanted to keep permanent records of yet allow editing on.
The group can either be public, so anyone can join, or it could be by invitation only-- for something like this, I imagine it would be public. The group appoints its own moderators so that threads can be moved between forums and the like.
If you (or someone else starts one), please post the group name here so we can easily find it. Also, you might want to use a fairly generic name like 3.5 optimization group or something, so it is easy to locate vs. say "fred's jumble dragon world 3.5 group"
I would. I was planning on simply making it 3.5 Character Optimization-- unless there's interest in making it cover more than simply Dungeons and Dragons (i.e. d20 Modern, Star Wars, etc...).
I like the idea of a group a lot, but I'm noticing a surprising amount of new people or just returning lost-peoples posting in here. I think we should try to maintain a proper presence here. The more I adjust to this board, the more comfortable I am with it. If they fix the BBcode, I'll basically be pretty much delighted with these boards. I've noticed a lot of changes and no downtime, which means there's a chance they have an actually decent hardware solution in place finally. Really exciting.

I did notice some downtime yesterday afternoon, though I'm not sure how much since I didn't try again for a couple of hours. I do think they're marching along with the changes though and will probably get a lot of our issues corrected. Though for me, my personal "must fix eventually" item is really subscriptions. The methods of reviewing activity in threads you've posted to that exist right now just don't cut it.

Note that they already fixed some of the basic BBcodes: (most) colors, bold, italics, sizes (you do need to do some search & replace: size=1 would now be size=8pt or so, size=3 would become size=16pt...).

Ahhhh....my handbooks are starting to fix themselves. A couple more things, fonts and emoticons, we'll see what happens over the next couple weeks (or I will need a new ratings system)
