| #1adrian_craneApr 24, 2008 14:24:45 | I'm trying to optimize a gear set for my ECL 10 fighter/mage character, and I was wondering about a few points regarding Spellblade, "wielded" weapons, and how it all meshes with my fighting style. My character uses a Ranseur, with Armor Razors to cover the 5' donut (UD book, just slashing version of spikes). Could both of these weapons reasonably be made with the Spellblade property? I'd probably take Dispel and Greater Dispel but I'm open to other options. Do Armor Spikes have to be of the same metal as the armor? I wear a Mithral BP for ASF reasons, but I'm considering the benefits of getting the razors made out of Adamantine. Next step: could I add in a Spiked Gauntlet? If so, I'd try for an Adamantine one once it was doable. Could THAT be Spellbladed to provide immunity to an additional spell (thinking Chain Dispel)? Finally, can Armor Spikes or a Spiked Gauntlet be sundered? The rules state that "You can’t sunder armor worn by another character," but the spikes and gauntlet run an ambiguous line -- the spikes are on the Armor table of the PHB, but the gauntlet isn't. As far as optimization is concerned, if weapon + spikes + spiked gauntlet is a kosher combo, then using a double weapon or TWF would net a total of 4 spell immunities via Spellblade, which isn't shabby at all. That doesn't even go into the Complete Scoundrel rules for boot blades, elbow blades, knee blades, crotch blades, knife eye attacks, or all that other crazy stuff... |

I don't think they can be sundered, but I'm not 100% sure on the gauntlet. You can wear one of those without wearing any other "armor", and won't incur any ASF from it, either. |

I'm thinking Defending (Core) and Spellstrike (MiC) would be pretty damn nice on much of this equipment--throw on some enhancement bonuses, and that's up to 5 points to either AC or saves vs Spells and SLAs, from every single item. Granted, it's pricey as hell, but that's some zany potential. Weapon: Enh bonus (x2 if double or TFW) Spikes: Enh bonus Gauntlets: Enh bonus x2 +20 to 25 on saves, or on AC? Yes please... ![]() |

| #5risnerApr 26, 2008 11:46:07 | 1) Could both of these weapons reasonably be made with the Spellblade property? 1) Does it say you can Spellblade multiple weapons? 2) Probably not, but you need to ask your DM. I think there may also be a FAQ question on this. 3) You can wear spiked Gauntlets, yes. 4) See my answer to #1. 5) Yes, they are both weapons and not armour. 6) Are you Thri-Keen? If not, how are you planning on using more than 2 weapons? I'm thinking Defending (Core) There is debate on whether or not two or more Defending weapons can be used together. |
| #6phaedrusxyApr 26, 2008 16:41:25 | 6) Are you Thri-Keen? If not, how are you planning on using more than 2 weapons? He only has to be "wielding" them, which isn't very well defined. Since you can make an attack of opportunity with any weapon you have out, I think just having it out counts as wielding it. So you can wield more than two weapons at a time, even as a normal humanoid. |

Like other weapons they have a base price (10gp or whatever). If you want to make them out of special materials, etc. you pay the amount(s). The key is to be consistent in your approach. They are either a weapon that happens to be attached to your armor ... in which case they are upgraded like weapons, made of different materials like weapons and can be sundered like weapons ... or they are the same material as your armor, etc. |
| #8songnsilenceApr 28, 2008 6:25:34 | You can also add a animated shield with shieldspikes and shieldrazors, defending & spellstriking spellblade for 8x immunity (2xarmor [spikes&razors), 2xshield [spikes&razors], 2xweapon, 2xgauntlet) 8x5 = 40 to AC or saves (or a combination of both) I would save money by getting spellstriking OR defending, and if you have chain spell, the +3 would pay off in this case (Greater Magic Weapon on 8 targets) price 8x+2 weapon ench.: 64,000gp 8x spellblade: 48,000gp :D |
