| #1wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 12:55:31 | There are tons of cool exotic weapons, but when weighed against the price of taking the feat to wield them without penalty, they might not look so great. Here's some that are worth the price you pay. More suggestions much appreciated, as well as builds (or links to them) that make use of an exotic weapon, or enable their usage especially well. Spiked chain: Most of us know how obvious this is. Any sort of search for the word “chain” and maybe “fighter” on this board will turn up numerous builds, a lot of them very nasty. Bastard sword: Or perhaps more accurately, katana. An Iajutsu Master can Weapon Finesse a katana with only a 2 level dip. This and its cousin, the dwarven waraxe, are also probably the best use of the Exotic Weapon Master’s uncanny blow stunt. For a character with an abnormally high Str score, multiplying your modifier by a full 2 instead of 1.5 can start to get a little unreasonable at a brisk pace. Dwarven waraxe: See above for use with Exotic Weapon Master. This one also has the very nice benefit of not requiring a feat if you’re a dwarf. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with a dwarf. Dwarven urgosh: Again, free for a dwarf. Normally, I’d say double weapons aren’t worth the feat, but when it costs nothing, go ahead. Granted, one end has a smaller damage dice, which doesn’t give it the advantage of other double weapons, but having two types of damage is handy, most of your feats apply to both ends, and it can be set against a charge, which is in my opinion an underrated ability. Sharktooth staff (SS): This one’s infamous with my main group, and for good reason. Combine the damage dice of a greatsword with the crit multiplier of a greataxe, and you have a decent weapon. However, you also get to make a free grapple attempt at any Small or Medium enemy every time you hit them, and then deal free weapon damage in subsequent rounds. The size restriction prevents huge abuse, but it is just as good as it sounds. Hell, it’s even cheaper and weighs less than a greatsword. Orc shotput (S&F): Yeah, no errata for this thing. A big, silly pile of numbers: 2d6 damage, 19-20/x3 threat, 10 ft range increment. You’ll want to be at least Medium size to use them, though. Kusari-gama (DMG): A spiked chain that you can wield in one hand! Okay, okay, you can’t Power Attack with it, but still, this is a solid weapon. All the other goodies of the spiked chain wrapped in a cute little package called “light weapon”. Two-weapon Fighting with these can be barrels of fun. Greathammer (MM4): Another goofy pile of numbers. 1d12 damage and 19-20/x4 threat (!?). And yes, I realize the minotaur’s stat block says just “x4”, blah, blah. Take that debate elsewhere. Tigerskull club (Frost): Not overpowering, but probably worth a feat if you’ve got room and will make use of its unique combination of properties. A x4 multiplier, two types of damage, tripping and disarming abilities, and it’s one-handed. Anyone have any builds/tricks/combos or specific tactics with this? Flind bar (MM3): These things are quite solid. They give you a free disarm attempt with a +2 bonus every time you threaten a critical hit. They are also one-handed and have nice numbers for being so at 2d4 damage with 19-20/x2 threat. And hey, if you’re ever a flind gnoll for whatever reason, they’re free! Jovar (PlHB): Although not as silly as the greathammer or shotput, this is also just a pile of numerals: 2d6 damage with an 18-20/x2 threat. Largest damage dice of any weapon with 18-20/x2? Anyone know of a bigger one? For style points, wield one as an evil character and graffiti the blade to warp the Celestial writing on it into something blasphemous. Harpoon (Frost): Interesting weapon. It can be lodged in an opponent if they fail a Reflex save, and deals the same damage when pulled out as it did going in. The returning enchantment could theoretically just cause it to do double damage, but that’s definitely a DM’s call. Raise the damage as much as possible, as the DC for the save is 10 + damage dealt. Elven lightblade (RotW): This little guy and it’s big brother, the thinblade, are just kukris and rapiers (respectively) with bigger damage dice, although the lightblade does piercing damage, not slashing. Normally, this would be a pass, but if you’re an elf, Improved Weapon Familiarity gets you proficiency in both. What’s better, your feats that name rapier (Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, etc) apply to both. Elven thinblade (RotW): See elven lightblade. Dragonsplit (MM4): This is the “other” x4 threat one-handed weapon. Unlike the tigerskull club, this does slashing damage, which qualifies it for things that the club can’t, and it counts as a light weapon for Two-weapon Fighting and Weapon Finesse. However, it has no tripping or disarming qualities. Crescent knife (Dr275): I don’t have the actual text of this or the braid blade, so I’m just going on what I’m told. This lets you make 2 attacks in place of every attack you would normally make. Silly. Braid blade (Du120): These grant you an extra attack and are affixed to your hair instead of being wielded normally. The extra attacks given by wearing multiples seems to stack, and there seems to be no limit to the number you can wear. Need confirmation on what issue this appears in. |
| #2hogarthFeb 22, 2007 13:01:20 | Sharktooth staff is one that comes to mind. |
| #3neilthrunFeb 22, 2007 13:11:03 | Orc Shotput, 2d6 19-20/x3. Only weapon with an increased range and multiplier that has no errata. Combine it with Master thrower and Disciple of Dispater and you can deal 2d6 13-20/x4. Pretty wicked. Although it is a thrown weapon and weighs 20 pounds. returning enchantment is a must. Spiked Chain is kind of obvious as a good exotic weapon. |
| #4repeekluosFeb 22, 2007 13:11:22 | Did you try in the Equipment forum? I know they may not compile one for CO work, but there may be a list of the "better" ones. Greathorn Minotaur Warhammer is pretty ridiculous. So is, as everyone knows the Spiked Chain. Edit: Beaten on the obvious. |
| #5ValantheFeb 22, 2007 13:15:47 | Kusari-Gama is also pretty nifty. |
| #6wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 13:19:23 | Sharktooth staff is one that comes to mind. Right. I gave myself headaches allowing a PC to use one of those in a game of mine. Here's two: - Dragonsplit (MM4). A finessable heavy pick that does slashing damage. Seems like it could have implications. - Goliath greathammer (RoS). The large version does 3d6, plus it has a x4 multiplier. |
| #7phoenixinfernoFeb 22, 2007 13:22:07 | Tigerskull Club (Frostburn) and the Bastard Sword/Dwarven Waraxe. |
| #8HarliquinnFeb 22, 2007 13:24:47 | - Goliath greathammer (RoS). The large version does 3d6, plus it has a x4 multiplier. Isn't there a Greathammer of some type in one of the Monster Manual's that has an even bigger crit range or multiplier? |
| #9wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 13:27:10 | Isn't there a Greathammer of some type in one of the Monster Manual's that has an even bigger crit range or multiplier? The greathorn minotaur hammer that was mentioned above is what you're talking about. 1d12 damage, 19-20/x4. |
| #10doink1212Feb 22, 2007 13:27:13 | Spiked Chain on a Fighter Warlock Mercurial Greatsword? (arms and equipment) Flind Bar (Monster Manual III) |
| #11jovkneeFeb 22, 2007 13:28:26 | The greathorn minotaur hammer that was mentioned above is what you're talking about. 1d12 damage, 19-20/x4. where is this weapon??? |
| #12wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 13:29:27 | Mercurial Greatsword? (arms and equipment) I don't know that the greatsword is much of an upgrade over a scythe for having to burn a feat on it. Unless of course the character in question isn't proficient in the scythe anyway. where is this weapon??? MM4, p101. |
| #13orc_taoFeb 22, 2007 13:38:46 | I personally don't mind the Great Falchion (Sandstorm). 1d12 damage with an 18-20/x2 crit. Nothing fancy, but sometimes simple can be fun. especially if you're a gnoll Barbarian/Ranger that rides around on a camel and insults the rest of the members of the party for their "softness"... ahhhh... those were the days... |
| #14Kurama_YoukoFeb 22, 2007 13:50:36 | What do people think about the greatspear Complete Warrior? I was thinking about using that for a lancer type character |
| #15emeramberFeb 22, 2007 14:35:03 | Harpoon has a lot of potential, especially if you can bump the damage up, like with sneak attack, since the save against it lodging in the target is damage based. Also on a nautical theme, nets are fairly useful, at least at low levels. |
| #16naanomiFeb 22, 2007 14:53:25 | Fullblade (Arms and Equipment) is a good pick for those looking at wielding Colossal++ size weapons for whatever reason... |
| #17wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 15:09:01 | If I'm not mistaken, the gnome quickrazor can be used for Iajutsu Focus cheese. |
| #18catharzFeb 22, 2007 15:15:13 | Kusarigama [DMG] ->The only light weapon with reach, this is also trip/disarm/close range. Rope dagger [Dragon 3??] ->Like a spiked chain but less damage, 15' reach, and has a bludgeoning form ("meteor hammer"). |
| #19HarliquinnFeb 22, 2007 15:34:19 | Kusarigama [DMG] Is it also 1 Handed? If not, the spiked chain is still better. [EDIT] I guess by definition, light weapon implies 1 Handed. |
| #20ressurrectorFeb 22, 2007 15:41:37 | Where is sharktooth staff from? I'm looking for interesting exotic weapons for my NPCs that don't suck. |
| #21hogarthFeb 22, 2007 15:46:56 | Where is sharktooth staff from? Savage Species. It lets you start a grapple as a free action if you hit. |
| #22repeekluosFeb 22, 2007 16:14:58 | Savage Species. It lets you start a grapple as a free action if you hit. ![]() I didn't know that. I will have to re-read that. |
| #23wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 16:56:06 | Does anyone know exactly which Dragon mag the rope dagger is from? Also, if anyone has any builds or characters (or links to them) that make especially good use of any exotic weapon, posts away! |
| #24daish0Feb 22, 2007 17:00:00 | Spiked Chain ... including a large < huge < gargantuan < colossal ( :D ) build and uber dex paired with combat reflexes and eventually whirlwind attack ... It is simply broken because you threaten every single square between you and the end of the chain. Generally in D&D everything that includes chains (even if it's only in their name :D ) is broken ![]() |
| #25jameswilliamogleFeb 22, 2007 17:05:14 | Linked to the Consolidated Binder Handbook. Triad + Andras... oh yeah... |
| #26zocckcastlestorm_dupFeb 22, 2007 17:09:11 | I like the 2-Bladed Sword. With 2B-Sw and 12 Ftr Levels& Str 16/Dex19 you can go with Weapon Foc/Spec, 2-WpFtg,2-WpDef, including Improved/Greater Feats, and MelWpMastery(Slash) and you have the following: Total To-Hit(No Magic/Masterwork);+13/+13/+8/+8/+3/+3/-2/-2 as a Full Round Attack. Need better AC? Drop the attack bonuses by Fighting Defensively and Gain + 6 Shield to AC. + 3 Shield Fighting Normally w/ Grt2WpDef. |
| #27wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 17:12:28 | Linked to the Consolidated Binder Handbook. Woah... The Triad reminds me of my friend's early-printing version of Psionics Handbook, where the Slayer is said to have proficiency with "all weapons". Heh. Anyway, that's cool, but I was going more for the weapons that are worth actually taking the feat for. When you have proficiency with all of them, you can pick whatever you please and not have to worry about spending many resources on them. Even so, thanks for the link. |
| #28ImpeesaFeb 22, 2007 17:17:34 | What do people think about the greatspear Complete Warrior? I was thinking about using that for a lancer type character I like it, I used it for a frenzied berserker for quite some time (lvl 1 to 22, actually). I should note that part of my liking for it comes from the fact that it doesn't explicitly say "can't attack adjacent spaces" like most reach weapons (including another one on the very same page) do. --Impeesa-- |
| #29kaleroanFeb 22, 2007 17:30:13 | I've always enjoyed the Jovar (2d6 18-20/X2) from the planar handbook. |
| #30catharzFeb 22, 2007 17:33:57 | The kusari-gama isn't a one-handed weapon, it isn't a double weapon, and it's in the DMG. |
| #31wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 17:51:54 | The kusari-gama isn't a one-handed weapon, it isn't a double weapon, and it's in the DMG. Huh. I'm clueless. Didn't know it was in the DMG, was looking at the OA version. Fixed. |
| #32zombiegleemaxFeb 22, 2007 18:13:47 | Harpoon has a lot of potential, especially if you can bump the damage up, like with sneak attack, since the save against it lodging in the target is damage based. Also on a nautical theme, nets are fairly useful, at least at low levels. If I can offer a comment on the harpoon; It does equal damage going in as it does going out. So, enchant it with returning. GORE! Also, for battlefield control, consider a mithril chain (or adamantine chain) net, anchored with four immovable rods. I played a character with a harpoon with an immovable rod in the shaft, and a net of the variety above. No matter what we fought, two enemies were immobilized on round 1 in a pretty consistent manner. In the subsequent rounds, he threw his returning harpoons (two weapon fighting after all) for sick damage. It's a higher level combo, but pretty cool nonetheless. |
| #33kilrooFeb 22, 2007 18:25:34 | - Greathammer (MM4): Crazy. 1d12, 19-20/x4. I'm almost certain that, like the flutter blade and the talenta sharrash or whatever it was, this has been corrected. I didn't even realize the orcish shotput had a 2x3, though, so it never occurred to me to wonder if it had been changed. |
| #34wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 18:39:03 | I'm almost certain that, like the flutter blade and the talenta sharrash or whatever it was, this has been corrected. I didn't even realize the orcish shotput had a 2x3, though, so it never occurred to me to wonder if it had been changed. I wouldn't be surprised if they did, but I don't see any errata. And where is the harpoon? |
| #35repeekluosFeb 22, 2007 19:10:31 | The Hammer that you posted is called the "Greathorn Minotaur Warhammer" I dont know if it matters too much or not. Just thought Id let you know. |
| #36twopiFeb 22, 2007 19:14:45 | SOmething to add to the discussion about Exotic weapons, the Master of Masks PrC. Even if you take just one level of it, you can wear the gladiator mask which makes you proficient with all martial and EXOTIC weapons. It you couple that with warblade, then you can switch any feats that you had to any of the new weapons you can use. |
| #37zombiegleemaxFeb 22, 2007 20:16:43 | I've always enjoyed the Jovar (2d6 18-20/X2) from the planar handbook. vouch; its like a great falchion, but with twice the style points ![]() as for that greathammer in the MM4, i made a thread about it and someone pointed out a very obvious thing......if you look at the monster's stats (the greenhorn minotaur thingy) it shows the weapon as being x4 only, not 19-20 x4 so most now agree that this is a clear typo that errata will fix |
| #38wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 20:25:40 | The Hammer that you posted is called the "Greathorn Minotaur Warhammer" I dont know if it matters too much or not. Just thought Id let you know. I'm just the kind of picky person who would notice this, and it is listed simply as "greathammer" in both the monster's stat block and the table of contents of the book. as for that greathammer in the MM4, i made a thread about it and someone pointed out a very obvious thing......if you look at the monster's stats (the greenhorn minotaur thingy) it shows the weapon as being x4 only, not 19-20 x4 Ah, so it is. Still it isn't clear which, in fact, is the typo, is it? Do monster stats override the weapon data, or vice versa? I wouldn't be surprised if it is supposed to be just x4, but as of now it hasn't been cleared up. Added Jovar to the list. |
| #39zombiegleemaxFeb 22, 2007 20:30:05 | I'm just the kind of picky person who would notice this, and it is listed simply as "greathammer" in both the monster's stat block and the table of contents of the book. yea, someone suggested me to write to customer service (insert place to write this kind of thing to here) or whatever about it to clear up which printing is correct, but not only am i lazy, im pretty freaking sure which is the correct one lol. if they really meant to have it as 19-20 x4, they are out of their minds ![]() but that doesnt mean i wouldent use it now as for this shotput, it was back in the day of weapon tables saying that they were large or whatnot. now, all weapons are listed as medium weapons with dmg listed for small weapons, but you can merely double the cost of something and make it large ( double weight too) so could you in fact have a large shotput? i dunno how errata deals with this conflict. |
| #40ressurrectorFeb 22, 2007 20:33:27 | Bleh |
| #41wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 20:42:14 | Bleh Er... kay? Anyway. Hm, is the shotput now a two-handed ranged weapon? Regardless, I don't see any reason why any weapon at all can't be made in smaller or larger sizes. |
| #42jaronkFeb 22, 2007 21:00:20 | Well, via the general weapon creation guidelines, it should be 1d12 20/X4, so the error is almost certainly the 19-20. JaronK |
| #43malisteenFeb 22, 2007 21:39:57 | Talenta Sharrash, post errata, is still pretty nasty, with reach and a 19-20/x3 crit. As for Bastard Sword: Sadly, no. It's a feat for +1 damage compared to a longsword. Very sub-optimal. It has style points (I hapily played a double bastard sword weilder in one game), but little else. Dwarven Waraxe is worth the cost for a dwarven martial type, however, because that cost is nothing. While +1 damage for a feat is lame, +1 damage for free is sweet. |
| #44wobberjackyFeb 22, 2007 21:49:39 | Talenta Sharrash, post errata, is still pretty nasty, with reach and a 19-20/x3 crit. I don't know where people are getting this, the errata for the sharrash says 19-20/x2. As for the bastard sword, it has a at least one use. The one that comes to mind is that katana = masterwork bastard sword. The 2nd level ability of Iajutsu Master allows you to finesse a katana. Powerful. Adding this to first post. |
| #45ShadoFeb 22, 2007 22:07:27 | Elven Courtblade, Elven Thinblade and Elven Lightblade. Sure, not that great as individually taken exotics, but all 3 gain benefits from feats as if they were each rapiers, the Courtblade is a two-handed finesse-able and elves can gain all three of these with one feat: Improved Weapon Familiarity. |
| #46tsuyoshikentsuFeb 22, 2007 22:53:56 | Crescent Knife, Dragon 286 (I think) For every attack you make, you get two attacks instead. Seriously. Braid Blade, Dungeon 120 (I think) Grants you an extra attack. The attacks between multiples seem to stack. There's no limit on the number of these you can wear. Harpoon, Frostburn (among others) If you don't see the Warhulk synergy, get off the boards. |
| #47kilrooFeb 22, 2007 23:06:18 | Crescent Knife, Dragon 286 (I think) 275. Actually the first place the Elven Thinblade appeared, I think. I had a character who was allowed to use one of these. Then some ultra powerful outsider or something made him walk off a cliff into an extradimensional prison because he'd gotten hold of Farslayer. |
| #48surrealFeb 22, 2007 23:27:46 | Cut'n'paste from a notepad file with some of my favourite exotic weapons: Warmace (CW) - 1H, 1d12 x2 - if you can get a bunch of size increases, this is the fastest scaling 1-handed weapon available Dire Pick (CW) - 1H, 1d8 x 4, not too hard to sub for Heavy Pick for a diety's favoured weapon Gythka (XPH, Thri-Kreen) - 1d10/1d10 X2 (S), best damage for a double weapon Chatkcha (XPH) - 1d6 18-20x2 (P), 20', best crit range for a thrown weapon Ritiik (FB) - 2H, on a hit can make a free trip *attack*, other properties similar to harpoon Dwarven Warpike (RoS) - 2H - basically a halberd with better damage and reach Caber (MotW) - "What rolls downstairs, along or in pairs, and rolls over your neighbour's dog? What's great for a snack, and fits on your back..." :D Flutter Blade (Underdark) - as far as I know, it's the only 19-20x3 weapon Dragonsplit (MM4) - 1H, 1d6 X4 (S) or 19-20X2 (S), counts as light for finesse and TWF, but can still PA |
| #49NathreetFeb 23, 2007 0:26:20 | I copied the original post and calculated average damage for each weapon, including crit damage. Second number is using the improved crit feat or keen enchantment. Original poster: feel free to copy the average damage values into your own post(s). - Bastard sword: 1d10, ?19-20/x2? = 6.05/6.6 avg. dmg - Sharktooth staff (SS): 2d6, x3. = 7.7/8.4 avg. dmg (plus grapple) - Orc shotput (S&F): 10 ft increment, 2d6, 19-20/x3 = 8.4/9.8 avg. dmg - Greathammer (MM4): Crazy. 1d12, 19-20/x4 = 8.45/10.4 avg. dmg - Flind bar (MM3): 2d4, 19-20/x2 = 5.5/6 avg. dmg. (plus free disarm attempt w/ crit, +2 bonus) - Jovar (PlHB): Greatsword with 18-20/x2 crit range.= 8.05/9.1 avg. dmg - Elven thinblade/lightblade (RotW): 1d8 18-20/x2 = 5.175/5.85 avg. damage, plus an elf can TWF it and apply rapier feats - Harpoon (Frost): Interesting weapon. Can be lodged in an opponent if they fail a Ref save, and deals the same damage when pulled out as it did going in. Returning enchantment could theoretically just cause it to do double damage. Warhulk and Bloodstorm Blade, anyone? I believe it deals damage going out - including strength damage - b/c you pull it. If it were a returning weapon I imagine it'd just get stuck, making the returning enchantment pointless. |
| #50wobberjackyFeb 23, 2007 0:35:57 | I copied the original post and calculated average damage for each weapon, including crit damage. Second number is using the improved crit feat or keen enchantment. Original poster: feel free to copy the average damage values into your own post(s). Woah. You're kind of my hero right now. I'm too lazy at the moment to even move some of the new suggestions to first post. Thanks! I think in the morning I'll fully update first post and organize it a bit, since the list is getting longer. As for the returning harpoon, it's up to the DM, I think. Thus, the "theoretically" in my description. However, I just got a neat mental image. Hurl a bunch of harpoons at someone and pin them to the ground with Ranged Pin feat. Then procede to stroll up and casually make your full-round actions to pull the harpoons out of your foe. You could then even stick them back in before pulling the last one out. |
| #51zombiegleemaxFeb 23, 2007 0:42:38 | Returning Harpoon = "Get over here!" Flawless victory. |
| #52NathreetFeb 23, 2007 1:04:11 | Returning Harpoon = "Get over here!" lol |
| #53hunter4242Feb 23, 2007 1:49:24 | I have a Dervish that's been using the Eagle's Claw (Sandstorm) to great effect. Sure it only does 1d6 damage, but it can be slashing or piercing, and has that tasty 18-20/x2 crit range. |
| #54tiejazFeb 23, 2007 2:05:59 | The Oriental Adventures Kusari-Gama was tight like girl pants. TWF or Reach weapon. Perfect for ninjas. 1. Hit opponent TWF in his face 2. Turn invisible 3. back up, hit him once w/ reach 4. watch him swing midair, not knowing you had a reach weapon ![]() |
| #55ShadoFeb 23, 2007 2:41:02 | Speaking of OA, there's the Chain. Spiked Chain (w/o the spikes) that does 1d6 damage but can be switched from a reach weapon to a double-ended weapon w/o reach. No action is designated for making the switch... in theory it's a free action. (Though a DM could easy say it's the equivalent of drawing a weapon... game specific.) |
| #56zombiegleemaxFeb 23, 2007 11:19:33 | The Drow Scorpion Spiked Chain is nice - a spiked chain that can sunder (slashing) from Secrets of Xend'rik iirc. |
| #57ressurrectorFeb 23, 2007 13:40:48 | The Drow Scorpion Spiked Chain is nice - a spiked chain that can sunder (slashing) from Secrets of Xend'rik iirc. And it's even better with the 19-20 crit range and the feat that let's you deal 1d4 CON dmg when you crit. (Secrets of Xen'Drik as well) |
| #58artaxerxesFeb 23, 2007 14:20:50 | Well, via the general weapon creation guidelines, it should be 1d12 20/X4, so the error is almost certainly the 19-20. Any one got a link or summary of the creation guidelines? My google fu is weak. |
| #59caoslayerFeb 23, 2007 14:28:47 | Whip, no joke, is a weapon able to disarm and trip everybody in 15 feet combined with whirlwind attack. Builds focused in such stuff like the marshall/bard ones (add charisma to disarm and trip) are neat. |
| #60zombiegleemaxFeb 23, 2007 14:46:35 | I haven't played D&D in a while, but I'm making a new character with an EW for an upcoming game, saw your posts about the sharktooth staff and had a few questions: 1) Does it have range? 2) If so, can you fight guys in close range as well (adjacent or whatever the wording is)? 3) Does the grapple you perform use the weapon's damage base damage? Or is the grapple damage rolled differently. (I always played a simple Fighter or Ranger with a sword back in the day, so I have never grappled ) |
| #61Kurama_YoukoFeb 23, 2007 14:48:54 | I like it, I used it for a frenzied berserker for quite some time (lvl 1 to 22, actually). I should note that part of my liking for it comes from the fact that it doesn't explicitly say "can't attack adjacent spaces" like most reach weapons (including another one on the very same page) do. That was one of my reasonings to, but i didnt wanna bring it up since i wasnt sure if it could or couldnt. |
| #62wobberjackyFeb 23, 2007 15:13:57 | I wanna do some organizing of first post and add some lengthier descriptions. Promise I'll get to that soon. Lots of interesting suggestions here. Still, any links at all to builds, or even rough character concepts would give this thread a lot more substance, I think. |
| #63RokkuFeb 23, 2007 15:29:19 | Secrets of Sarlona boasts several new exotic weapons, all with an asian flavor. Because Sarlona is Eberron's Asia. They're all pretty interesting, and most of them are monk-friendly (ie, you can use flurry of blows with them), but most worthy of note are: The Monk's Cane: Its combat stats are unimpressive (1d6/x2 bludgeoning, throwable with a 10 foot range increment), but it's monk-friendly, and most importantly: it's innocuous. A Sense Motive check against the wielder is required to recognize the cane as a weapon, at DC 20 or the wielder's Bluff check, whichever's higher. The Spinning Sword: 1d6 19-20/x2 slashing. One-handed. Has reach, but can also be used against adjacent opponents. Finessable. Specifically can NOT be used two-handed. Can be worn as a belt, requiring a Search check at DC 15 to recognize it as a weapon. If you use Sleight of Hand to conceal it as a belt, you get +6 to your check. Both weapons are excellent for sneaky characters. |
| #64Kurama_YoukoFeb 23, 2007 16:04:32 | i take it the spinning sword is suppose to be like Ivy's weapon from Soul Calibur? |
| #65wobberjackyFeb 23, 2007 16:40:47 | i take it the spinning sword is suppose to be like Ivy's weapon from Soul Calibur? That's what I thought when I first read that post. If it is then *ugh*. And also *wowow* at the same time. ![]() |
| #66GhostStepperFeb 23, 2007 17:34:06 | The spinning sword is more like a flexible metal cord/rod. Remember that thing the guy in the jumpsuit used in the spa against sean connery in Never Say Never Again? Its basically a really long verion of that. |
| #67ressurrectorFeb 23, 2007 18:04:58 | If anyone else has seen/read Kenshin it's like that one whip-sword that Chou uses. I think I've seen similar weapons in plenty of other places. As to the Ivy thing, it seems (from the picture) like one or more thin, sharp, metal blades protruding from a handle; as opposed to a sectioned sword with a central cord. Other weapons from Secrets of Sarlona include: Cutting Wheel: 1d6 19-20 light exotic melee weapon, with 10' range (+2 vs disarm, monk weapon) Steel Flute: 1d4 x2 light simple melee weapon, with 10' range (innocuous as monk's cain, can be masterwork instrument as well, good for bards?) Hook Sword: 1d6 P or 1d8 S 19-20 one-handed exotic melee weapon (+2 on disarm, monk weapon) as well as two different double-weapons (exotic) Monks Spade 1d8/1d8 x2B/x3S Monk Weapon Zulaat 2d4/2d4 x3 |
| #68ogs-remixFeb 23, 2007 19:38:56 | I dunno if anyone said this already, but the Duom from Arms and Equipment is similar to the Spiked Chain. It's a reach weapon which can attack within 5 ft. and you get a bonus on it's first attacks within 5 ft. of yourself due to it's weird design. The Elven Courtblade only does 1d10 damage, but it does piercing & slashing along with being the only weapon-finessable 2h weapon (I think). All greatsword feats work on the Courtblade a well. |
| #69Kurama_YoukoFeb 23, 2007 19:45:39 | As to the Ivy thing, it seems (from the picture) like one or more thin, sharp, metal blades protruding from a handle; as opposed to a sectioned sword with a central cord. what picture are you refering to? Ivy's Sword/Whip functions just like the name sake, a sword that can then change into a bladed whip like weapon, in game she actually uses it like a normal short sword then depending on the buttons you press she can extend it into a many sectioned sword-whip. kind of like this picture. |
| #70mfaulknerFeb 23, 2007 20:15:13 | Ok, I will wade into this topic (because it is occuring to my current character) I like the Valenar double scimitar. Put this in the hands of a ranger in light armor and the two handed penalties are only -2/-2. You now have two attacks that do 1d6 each with a crit of 18-20X2. But lets take it further. Now take the feat improve critical. Now the crit range is 15-20X2 to each attack. Not too bad |
| #71GhostStepperFeb 23, 2007 20:22:51 | This is the picture being refered to:![]() The whip-like thing near the left if the spinning sword |
| #72MikeNFeb 23, 2007 20:27:08 | Drow Scorpion Chain from Races of Eberron. Same stats as a spiked chain except for 1d6 damage that slashes. Best part is it counts as a spiked chain for purposes of exotic feats etc, so you can flurry (EWM) with it at the same time as you're tripping and dancing (Dervish). |
| #73jaronkFeb 23, 2007 22:22:35 | The Elven Courtblade only does 1d10 damage, but it does piercing & slashing along with being the only weapon-finessable 2h weapon (I think). *cough* Spiked Chain *cough* |
| #74neptuneheroFeb 23, 2007 23:23:37 | Scorpion-tail whip. Can't remember the book offhand, but it does 1d43 damage. Haha, on the other hand, maybe that was a typo... |
| #75phoenixinfernoFeb 24, 2007 0:06:34 | When I mentioned Bastard Sword and Dwarven Waraxe, I was actually thinking about Exotic Weapon Master's Uncanny Blow. That extra 0.5xSTR is nice. Also the Lightblade/Thinblade/Courtblade benefit from feats related to Short/Long/Greatswords respectively as well. |
| #76wobberjackyFeb 24, 2007 0:21:36 | When I mentioned Bastard Sword and Dwarven Waraxe, I was actually thinking about Exotic Weapon Master's Uncanny Blow. That extra 0.5xSTR is nice. Also the Lightblade/Thinblade/Courtblade benefit from feats related to Short/Long/Greatswords respectively as well. EWM was the first thing I thought of too. But is that ability really useful when you can just use a two-handed weapon and not spend a feat and a class level? I suppose if you're Str score is unreasonably high? And yes, the thinblade/lightblade benefit from longsword/short sword feats. I think using rapier feats would be more optimal for an elf TWFing with the thin/lightblade, and that's the only situation I can see taking the feat to wield them as worth it. |
| #77enamel_32Feb 24, 2007 0:33:12 | If the weapon is already exotic, making it heavy (magic of faerun) will increase the damage die, at the cost of not being able to use finesse with it. |
| #78catharzFeb 24, 2007 0:51:04 | The Oriental Adventures Kusari-Gama was tight like girl pants. For a ninja the DMG kusarigama is in all ways superior. TWF (with no penalties) and reach at the same time is both cool and effective. The one problem is the lack of power attack, but that's why you've got sneak attack. |
| #79zombiegleemaxFeb 24, 2007 7:57:11 | Nice list. One that seems to have been skipped - bolas. Range trip attack without using a prc or being tripped/disarmed back. Add in spell storing for more fun (ie grease etc). Hilarious when used by a master thrower... ;) |
| #80repeekluosFeb 24, 2007 10:08:21 | I'm just the kind of picky person who would notice this, and it is listed simply as "greathammer" in both the monster's stat block and the table of contents of the book. I must have an overactive imagination or something. When I looked it up again (Because I could have sworn it was called GHMWH) you were correct. Oh well. Ill be wrong, but I will still call it GHMWH. |
| #81zombiegleemaxFeb 24, 2007 12:16:10 | Ice Axe. (Frostburn) D6 (x4). Slashing/Piercing. One of the only 1h x4 criticals with slashing. Qualifies for Dervish if you want x4 crit for something. Can be used at a -2 without the exotic weapon prof. feat. Also gives a +4 bonus on climb checks Probably inferior to Dragonsplit because it cannot be weapon finessed. |
| #82ValantheFeb 24, 2007 13:52:35 | I must have an overactive imagination or something. How much does said hammer cost? I can't find a cost listed. |
| #83wobberjackyFeb 24, 2007 14:09:12 | How much does said hammer cost? I can't find a cost listed. Good catch. Were I the DM, I'd say the price reads: kill a greathorn minotaur. EDIT: Oh, and where is the heavy thing? I can't seem to find it. Or am I just blind? |
| #84ValantheFeb 24, 2007 14:10:41 | Good catch. Yeah, that's what I'm afraid of. Luckily, I am the DM, so I don't have much trouble justifying one of my BBEG's having one :p |

I have been looking for a single weapon that meets all three of these requirements but have been having a hard time. Does anyone have any suggestions? |
| #89tsuyoshikentsuFeb 25, 2007 1:34:27 | There's a Dragon feat that lets you flurry with a polearm. |
| #90MomarFeb 25, 2007 1:36:14 | There's a Dragon feat that lets you flurry with a polearm. They have a feat like that in Secrets of Sarlona as well. |
| #91catharzFeb 25, 2007 2:03:41 | Just to clarify, it's not a double weapon, you can just weild 2 of them at the same time. Apparently there is a lot of confusion surrounding the kusarigama. I can't really understand why, but I'll try to lay things out fully in one post. There are two versions of the kusarigama. One is the 3.5e, core version. This is found in the DMG. It's a [u]light weapon[/u] with reach, and can be used to attack all threatened squares (like a spiked chain). It can be used to trip or disarm at a bonus. The other is the 3.0e Oriental Adventures version. This is a two handed weapon which is finessable and can be used with reach like a spiked chain or as a double weapon. It can also be used for disarm and trip attacks. For TWFing the OA kusarigama is inferior to the core version, because the OA one can't be used at reach. Because it is a light weapon, the core kusarigama can be used without penalty for TWFing (and you get Axl Low). For THF the OA kusarigama is inferior to the spiked chain because it does less damage. Can anyone think of an exotic weapon that is: I think the rope dagger/meteor hammer qualifies, although that's from Dragon. |

| #96zombiegleemaxFeb 25, 2007 17:12:24 | Can anyone think of an exotic weapon that is: well you could always take shou disciple (from unapproachable east/forgotten realms) your class levels in this PrC stack with your monk levels for determining unarmed dmg, flurry, AC bonus, and run speed. at 3rd level, you gain the ability to flurry with any light weapon, whether its a monk weapon or not. at 5th level, you can flurry with any martial weapon period. it's only a 5 level prestige class that would fit what you want nicely, at least i think ![]() |

| #99spartanmd_dupFeb 25, 2007 20:16:20 | Talenta Sharrash, post errata, is still pretty nasty, with reach and a 19-20/x3 crit. How about using it with two hands with Uncanny Blow from Exotic Weapon Master? |
| #100spartanmd_dupFeb 25, 2007 20:19:36 | When I mentioned Bastard Sword and Dwarven Waraxe, I was actually thinking about Exotic Weapon Master's Uncanny Blow. That extra 0.5xSTR is nice. | #101zombiegleemaxFeb 25, 2007 20:21:16 | Does greatsword weapon focus/specialization also apply to Jovar, from the planar handbook 2d6 18-20/x2? im not sure thats quite the same; he has it posted as a greatsword but with (insert stats here) its really a diffrent weapon altogether, just similar stats. |
| #102jaronkFeb 25, 2007 20:44:56 | It has to say it benefits from those things to get those benefits, and it doesn't. And yes, the fullblade should be a medium two handed weapon. JaronK |
| #103zombiegleemaxJun 07, 2007 14:49:15 | the full-blade is a large bastard sword. |
| #104jaronkJun 07, 2007 17:03:43 | Thread necromancy much? And you're wrong, it's not a large bastard sword. The whole weapon equivilency thing went out with 3.0. It's a slightly larger greatsword, doing just a touch more damage and requiring an exotic weapon proficiency feat to weild to compensate. JaronK |
| #105kurashuJul 24, 2007 17:30:13 | Can anyone think of an exotic weapon that is: Shou Disciple 5 + EWP(Spiked Chain). |

| #107animefunkmasterAug 13, 2007 23:16:35 | Got to have an exotic weapon without the feat? A Fine +2 Skillful enhancement will give you prof with any melee weapon. Granted it is expensive but it also gives you cleric bab with that weapon... thought it needed to be said. |
| #108snizorAug 14, 2007 14:09:37 | Got to have an exotic weapon without the feat? A Fine +2 Skillful enhancement will give you prof with any melee weapon. Granted it is expensive but it also gives you cleric bab with that weapon... thought it needed to be said. Mouthpick (LoM, Beholder section) weapons also do this. Only +1, but has to replace a bite attack and is generally cheesy. |
| #109gavinfoxxNov 07, 2007 17:52:48 | I think there should be a polearm on this list, because there are many situations where a polearm is useful... and also some interesting feats that apply to polearms... This is the best polearm I found: Dwarven Warpike, 2 handed, does 2d6 damage, has 20/x3 critical rating, does piercing or slashing damage, costs 45 gp, weighs 15 pounds, has hardness 5, has 10 hit points, has reach 10', can be set versus charge, can be used to make trip attacks, and counts as a polearm. From Races of Stone and Dragon 331. And also, isnt there errata on the Greathammer? making it just 20/x4? sorry for thread resurrection, but I find this topic interesting! |
| #110JanusJonesNov 07, 2007 18:03:27 | What about the Fukimi-bari? Arms and Equipment guide. Works like shurikens used to, but I don't think they've been updated. One attack turns into three to-hit rolls, leading to silliness - no Strength bonus to damage, though. |
| #111mr_teapotNov 07, 2007 19:07:32 | Why are Dwarven Waraxe and Bastard Sword on the list? They are like the canonical examples of Exotic Weapons not worth spending a feat on (well, after the monk weapons). If you want a dwarven waraxe, you play a dwarf. And a bastard sword (or dwarven waraxe, for that that matter) only averages one point of damage higher than a longsword. That's worse than Weapon Specialization, which is already a weak feat. And I'm sure most people come across magic longswords more often than magic bastard swords, so your Weapon Specialization (longsword) is going to be more useful than XWP (bastard sword). And then there's the fact that you can wield them two handed (which you likely want to do anyway) with just a martial weapon proficiency. So not worth a feat. I might accept that in an Exotic Weapon Master build they're good, but in normal fightery type builds, the feats are traps and should be noted as such. |
| #112wihNov 07, 2007 20:07:25 | Bastard Sword/Dwarven Waraxe, as noted many times in this thread, are listed because of Exotic Weapon Master's ability to give an exotic 1 handed weapon 2*STR to damage rather than 1.5*STR to damage when weilded 2-handed. Also unless I'm mistaken, there'sthis: A Bastard Sword/Dwarven Waraxe is a 2-handed martial weapon that can be used in one hand, and thus counts as 2-handed for purposes of Disarming and Sundering (+4 for two-handed weapon, extra HP for someone sundering you). |
| #113gavinfoxxNov 07, 2007 21:11:27 | It should be noted, that you can use most 1 handed weapons two handed, unless they are light weapons or otherwise say you cant use them two handed... like I'm in a game where the cleric uses his morning star two handed.. |
| #114wihNov 07, 2007 23:00:33 | Sure, you can use your Morningstar two-handed. But this is a thread about Exotic weapons, and the first ability in question (EWM's Uncanny Blow) can only be used with Exotic Weapons. The second ability in question (using a two-handed weapon in one hand) cannot be done with Martial or Simple weapons AFAIK (only some Exotics). |
| #115brag3006Nov 07, 2007 23:32:55 | From Swrod and Fist Mercurial Greatsword 2d8/x4 slashing is a good one. 600 gp Mercurial Longsword 1d10/x3 (for those 1 handed weapon fans) 400 gp |
| #116wihNov 07, 2007 23:41:48 | From Swrod and Fist These were reprinted in Arms and Equipment Guide, doing 2d6x4 and d8x4 respectively. They're just exotic Scythe/Picks with slightly more damage, nothing too astounding. Now, some of the weapons discussed earlier in this thread that do 19x3 or 19x4 criticals - those are something to look at. |
| #117the_shamanNov 08, 2007 7:01:48 | Are you sure? I've only seen it in OA. |
| #118ghostpilotNov 24, 2007 4:58:17 | There's also the Rope Dart and Meteor Hammer from page 73 of Dragon #319. They have save the same specs as the Spiked Chain aside from doing 1d4 of damage, is Flurry-able by Monks, and having 5' more of reach. 15' of reach. ![]() The Meteor Hammer does Bludgeoning Damage (the Rope Dart is Piercing), and proficiency in one gives your proficiency in the other. And since it's WotC and not third party, it'll be easier for your DM to swallow. There's a version of each weapon in Bastion Press' Arms and Armor that is a bit more realistic (the Meteor Hammer does more damage [1d6] while the Rope Dart is more precise [19-20]), and can be used as double weapons in addition to everything else, you could have a harder time letting it fly with the DM. If one could overlook the 1d4 of damage the WotC versions use, a Monk or a Martial Adept could be nasty with these weapons. ![]() |
| #119UCsimplymeNov 24, 2007 10:29:48 | I actually solved my own question a couple months ago. The answer to the weapon that is flurryable, used for tripping, and can reach is the Hook Sword (from secrets of sarlona) with the Flying Tiger feat and one level of Exotic Weapon Master. This combo worked better for me than taking 5 levels of Shou Disciple. Thanks for the suggestions everyone ![]() |
| #120gryffyddMar 02, 2008 19:24:47 | Y'know, I know the Elven Courtblade isn't like... Godly, but I think it deserves a mention. 1d10 two handed weapon, with an 18-20/x2 crit range, and the ability to do pierce or slash at your option. Besides, it's the highest damage finessable weapon in the game AFAIK. And wow, UCsimplyme, I think you mean the Spinning Sword, not the Hook Sword, but WOW, that's a good weapon. Spinning Sword: 1d6, 19-20/x2, slashing damage, reach weapon, can be used at close range as well. And it's one handed. No bonus to trip, but still. |
| #121wihMar 02, 2008 21:15:03 | Y'know, I know the Elven Courtblade isn't like... Godly, but I think it deserves a mention. 1d10 two handed weapon, with an 18-20/x2 crit range, and the ability to do pierce or slash at your option. Hook Swords with the Flying Tiger feat can be hooked together to become a reach weapon. But yes, the Spinning Sword is a very, very good weapon. |
| #122sonofzealMar 02, 2008 21:25:12 | Scorpion Claws (Sandstorm) Light weapon, 1d6/x2, slashing or piercing. Pretty sub-par, but check this: a +4 to grapple checks, and you can use them for damage with a grapple check, instead of the normal -4 attack rolls! That makes the +4 even better, since you can now enchant these and do significantly more grapple damage than would otherwise be feasible. I don't know why every non-monk grapple build ever doesn't use these. (edit) Oh, and even better - not only can you use this on the offhand just fine, you can even do it without proficiency and still get that juicy +4! Monks with very lenient DMs could dual-wield these without proficiency for a +8 (questionable stacking rules, but oh well), and make unarmed attacks as normal with elbows and feet, as per Monk flavour text. |
| #123jameswilliamogleMar 02, 2008 21:49:43 | Scorpion Claws (Sandstorm) That's nice... Good idea for Binders, too: The Triad + Zagan for a net +12 to grapple, and proficiency w/o spending a feat! |
| #124sonofzealMar 02, 2008 21:57:59 | That's nice... Good idea for Binders, too: The Triad + Zagan for a net +12 to grapple, and proficiency w/o spending a feat! The only question is whether you can dual-wield them for a +8. One could argue that, at least in this case, it's two distinct objects and hence the unnamed bonuses stack, and the visual image for this makes sense, grabbing onto enemies with both at the same time. Depends on your definition of "from the same source" I suppose. Do note that you don't have to wield it as your primary weapon in order to get the bonus. Is there any one-handed weapon that gives you an "Improved Grab" equivalent power like the Sharktooth does? |
| #125xerjMar 02, 2008 23:43:23 | I haven't read the whole thread so apologies if it's been mentioned, but I like the Elven Courtblade. 2-handed finessable weapon. It's worked out quite nicely for a recent fencer character of mine. And I now see that it has been mentioned, lol. |
| #126argaudMar 03, 2008 2:50:57 | I think there should be a polearm on this list, because there are many situations where a polearm is useful... and also some interesting feats that apply to polearms... The warpike deserves a mention, yes. And also: Two-bladed sword: if you absolutely have to go two-weapon fighting and greatsword + armor spikes is too cheesy for your DM, this is one of the best weapons, because it is 1d8/1d8 19-20x2, and can be used two-handed when you only have one attack (like when charging). Great Bow: it is just a composite longbow that does 1d10 base damage with 150’ range increments. Not great, but some interesting things can be done with Exotic Weapon Master. I don’t think there are many other bow-type exotic weapons. |
| #127jaronkMar 03, 2008 4:01:07 | Greatbows are nice for long range sniper builds, who usually want the best range they can get. The best range you can get before magic is a Dragonbone Composite Greatbow, at 150' base range increment. JaronK |
| #128green_eyesMar 03, 2008 5:05:21 | Make it Elvencraft Dragonbone Composite Greatbow. Becuase now it's a melee weapon as well. |
| #129CantripNMar 03, 2008 5:08:20 | The best thing about Exotic Bows like the Bonebow and the Greatbow is that the Bracers of Archery (DMG) grant proficieny in them, as well as a slight bonus. |
| #130green_eyesMar 03, 2008 5:15:22 | Mouthpick (LoM, Beholder section) weapons also do this. Only +1, but has to replace a bite attack and is generally cheesy. And a warshaper can grow himself a bite attack... Hehe! :D A Mouthpick Fullblade? That's what I call using your head (= Actually I wanted to ask, whether you can use spinning sword to TWF. I'm still waiting for the book. |
| #131CantripNMar 03, 2008 5:20:25 | Actually I wanted to ask, whether you can use spinning sword to TWF. I'm still waiting for the book. It's a One Handed, Finessible Weapon. Yes, you can use TWF with it, but you'll be better off getting Feycraft Spinning Swords, so they do 1d4 damage, but are light weapons - you can't use them in two hands anyway, since the text says you can't. Players in my campaign will soon encounter a rogue using 2 of those at once. :D 7d6 SA, ITWF and Reach are a scary combo. |
| #132ratpickMar 03, 2008 5:28:25 | Ok, I will wade into this topic (because it is occuring to my current character) Needs Incarnum Blade and Power Critical. There's nothing better than having a +8 on the roll to confirm critical hits when you already threaten them 25 % of the time. |

| #136jandrem_von_zarovichMar 28, 2008 18:27:18 | My fave was always the bladed gauntlet from Sword and Fist. It's a light weapon that does 1d6/19-20x2 (previously 17-20x2 before revision). Its a pair of blades attached to your guantlet, much like the wrist blade used by the Predator in the movies. The sheer beauty of this weapon, aside from the chance to act out any Wolverine fantasies, is that your hand is still free to hold items or cast spells. Now, use one of these with a Duskblade holding a pair of Maximize Rods, and viola! Cheese deluxe. |
| #137andyjamesMar 28, 2008 21:23:18 | Would the Sharktooth Staff, being a Large 3.0 weapon, convert to 3.5's two-handed Medium, or one-handed Large? Because I can see a Goliath EWM/WarHulk doing nasty, nasty things with that if it is one-handed Large... |

Because I can see a Goliath EWM/WarHulk doing nasty, nasty things with that if it is one-handed Large... It doesn't matter either way - they can each weild them that way, just whichever it wasn't designed for takes a -2 to attack rolls with it. |
| #139andyjamesMar 30, 2008 18:35:48 | It doesn't matter either way - they can each weild them that way, just whichever it wasn't designed for takes a -2 to attack rolls with it. Well, it may run into issues with the EWM weapon trick, and getting rid of that -2 would be nice too ![]() |
| #140JanusJonesMay 04, 2008 19:53:06 | You forget to mention the most important function of a harpoon - HALVING the opponent's speed until they pull it out! This alone makes it worth more than ANY of the other weapons - it's a de-buff, not just damage! |
| #141Kn1vesJan 15, 2009 18:18:14 | It may not be the greatest weapon on the planet but I've been partial to the Vulcanian Thunder Club, from Dragon Compendium, for quite a while. From the picture and the description how do people feel about it being banded in adamantine and counting as such? What about the Distance property for a 40 foot cone attack? Vulcanian Thunder Club: 1D10 Damage Crit: x2 Bludgeoning Special: As a standard action shoot a 20ft cone of iron pellets dealing 2D4 damage. DC 15 Reflex save for half damage. |
| #142NiteCyperJan 15, 2009 19:29:14 | What about the Fukimi-bari? Arms and Equipment guide. Works like shurikens used to, but I don't think they've been updated. One attack turns into three to-hit rolls, leading to silliness - no Strength bonus to damage, though. +1 |
| #143heliomanceJan 15, 2009 20:10:06 | Kaorti gets you a weapon with 18-20/x4. Add keen. A 15-20/x4 crit range sounds fun, wouldn't you say? I believe Kaorti weapons are in the Fiend Folio. |
| #144NiteCyperJan 15, 2009 20:56:56 | Kaorti gets you a weapon with 18-20/x4. Add keen. A 15-20/x4 crit range sounds fun, wouldn't you say? It can be found online: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a. Keen is obvious. Learn about Disciple of Dispater builds. Kensai Vorpality to unarmed strike. |

| #146emansdrawkcabJan 16, 2009 1:12:32 | It can be found online: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a. Don't forget Blood in the Water. Never forget Blood in the Water. |
| #147heliomanceJan 16, 2009 4:22:39 | It can be found online: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/re/20031014a. Kaorti won't stack with Disciple of Dispater, as DoD only works with weapons made mostly of iron. |
| #148Kn1vesJan 16, 2009 6:27:36 | the heck is that thunder club? is it a magical weapon? if not im picturing a giant blunderbuss! It's in Dragon Compendium and is loaded with an alchemical pack of alchemists fire and iron shot, so yes it's a blunderbuss. It can be reloaded manually and holds one shot. |
| #149NiteCyperJan 16, 2009 21:25:58 | Kaorti won't stack with Disciple of Dispater, as DoD only works with weapons made mostly of iron. Metalline? Does anyone understand the post in that thread that says '1. oil of metalline, 2. lots of copper, 3. profit?' because how can you have an Oil of a weapon-material? A +2 weapon enhancement is still a big price. I am wondering how it can be reduced. Is there a way to transmutate the material something is made of, particularly from its original material to metalline (as opposed to something like flesh to stone)? |
| #150heliomanceJan 17, 2009 6:24:58 | Wouldn't that stop it being Kaort resin, thereby losing the x4 multiplier? |
| #151unundindurJan 17, 2009 8:01:24 | Wouldn't that stop it being Kaort resin, thereby losing the x4 multiplier? I agree with you, once it turns into something its no longer its former self. Anyhow, I have never seen that web enhancement and I can only say : WOW |
| #152Kn1vesFeb 27, 2009 21:03:59 | I was reading the spikard weapons the other day and the text at the beginning of the section states that only two of the spikard weapons are detailed. So it would seem that any rigid weapon can be made into a spikard weapon meaning most of the exotic weapons listed here can also be made spikard weapons with no additional feat. In that same vein any exotic weapon can be made heavy, as per Magic of Farune, with no higher feat expenditure than normal. Heavy Jovar Spikard anyone? |
| #153cathedralsquaresFeb 27, 2009 22:58:27 | What book is the spinning sword in? |
| #154emansdrawkcabFeb 28, 2009 2:54:38 | IIRC it's in Secrets of Sarlona. P.S. Why has nobody mentioned the Gnome Quickrazor? (And if someone did, I blame the search function...) |
| #155ryfteMay 14, 2009 19:25:35 | Eagle Claw from Sandstorm + Eagle Fury (feat): You get an extra attack with each attack you make with the weapon. It's wonderful for TWF multi-iterative attack builds and works amazingly well with any Disciple of Dispater Blood in the Water Warblade build as well since it's a 18-20 threat range light weapon. If you add in the "lightning mace" trick it's pretty sick... *shrug* :D |
| #156rymosracMay 14, 2009 19:32:52 | That's still a two-feat investment for one extra attack. That limits it's usefulness a lot in normal games, but it's pretty good if you've got flaws. |
| #157sofawallMay 14, 2009 21:02:59 | Well, is it every attack or every attack sequence? |
| #158rymosracMay 14, 2009 22:00:04 | One extra attack with an eagle claw in your full attack. It's basically rapid shot with eagle claw only. |
| #159007spartaJul 22, 2009 9:21:30 | Chainblade anyone? Exotic 1h 1d8 17-20 (yes, 17-20) /x2 crit Works as a chain for reach and threatened squares, too! And has slashing damage, not piercing, so you can go dervish with this thing |
| #160true_shinkenJul 22, 2009 12:23:34 | Chainblade anyone? Where is that... THING... from? |
| #161-ktkenshinx-Jul 22, 2009 12:27:04 | Where is that... THING... from? The Torn Asunder Eberron book. I believe it is a third-party text, as you can imagine based off of the absolutely hilarious statistics. "Thing" is right. -ktkenshinx- |
| #162FenixLordAug 06, 2015 15:02:42 | I've read this thread where there was a guy speaking of the Katori Ribbion Jovar (2d6, 18-20/x4 crit) and the Heavy Jovar (3d6, 18-20/x2 crit). I was just wondering if they really exist since it looks too good to be true... Also if they do why would you ever get yourself a regular Jovar.... |

| #165Slagger_the_ChuulAug 07, 2015 3:40:20 | The spiked chain itself is worth it for the right build, since it combines reach with finesse and tripping ability, which could be desirable for a more Dex-based lockdown specialist. And there's the kusari-gama, which gives reach on a light weapon, or the gnome quickrazor, which is useful for this that trigger on the drawing of a weapon. You generally want some special combination of properties to justify taking an Exotic Weapon Proficiency feat for a weapon. |
