I'm planning on making a Factotum and I'm curious if there are any links to specific builds that I should look for or think on.

Thanks!

If only we had a thread, that had handy links. And - what if it was STICKIED?

Ah well, a guy can dream.

On this forum, it's your job to find builds and guides that have already been made, unless what you're looking for is very obscure - and it isn't.

Read the Handy Links and the Posting Guidelines.

I'm sorry, my mistake. I use this board rarely. Though it is for an Age of Worms campaign, if that is helpful at all.

It's really simple, actually...

Factotum 19/Exemplar 1. Every feat...EVERY FEAT...is Font of Inspiration.

Done.

Okay there's no way you're getting that much INT. Go reread the preqs for Font.

Factotum8/warblade1/Iaijustu Master5 is a favorite of mine. Do what you like with the rest of the levels.

i've always liked human paragon mixed with factotum, cause you can get a feat for anything you want (font of insipiration) and an ability boon, that guarantees that you can take another one.

Not possible? With a starting intelligence 18+ 5 levels+ 5 tome+ 6 Item, that's a 34 right there for ya. Intelligence mod +12 easy. Heck, add more flaws if you're allowed, you got room. By level 20, having that intelligence shouldn't be a problem.

IMO you must have the mod as permanent, not from magic item bonus..

So you're taking other feats and then retraining to font when you hit the way high levels and can afford that +5 tome, right? And seriously, how much Inspiration do you need, anyway? It's per encounter, not per-day.

Are you sure that +6 item count towards pre-reqs? I know they don't count towards skillpoints.

Wait seriously? My friend a I were arguing over this exact thing, as he''s a factotum. I conceded and agreed it gave extra inspiration points, but it doesn't? Can you give me a rule that would prove it? I would love to prove him wrong.

Magic item bonuses count for feat pre-req's. I believe this was addressed in the FAQ.

You'll still lose the benefits of the feat if you lose the bonuses that let you qualify for it, though. You'll still have the feat, but won't benefit from it until you meet the qualifications again.

I don't know much about the Factotum (aside from what this really annoying person said when he played one once...but I won't hold that against the class ;) ) but I know I read in one of the books that magic items allow you to qualify for feats and PrCs and the like, but you lose the use of the feats and the ability to level up in the PrC (and, if the PrC abilities are dependent upon the prereq you lost, you lose the PrC ability too!) the second you take the item off. You get them back when the item goes back on, but this can prove problematic if you lose the item or if you enter an anti-magic field. I've been trying to find exactly where this is so I can quote it, but I can't seem to locate it. I'll keep looking. I think it was in or near the stuff about virtual feats, but I can't find that section either!

Just PAO into a Black Ethergaunt or something.

VoP / Embrace / Dark Shuffle / Outsider can net at least an extra 30 FoI's, I'm sure.

When you are choosing a classes feature up to your Factotum level, can you choose a rogues' special ability or higher-level sneak attack damage? I don't have the book in front of me at the moment, so I figure I could be wrong.

You can choose anything that the class gains at 15th level or lower, but use your Factotum level in place of the normal class' level. So you could select the Sneak Attack and get 10d6 Sneak attack (which you can only use one minute a day, so you might want to stick with just using IPs if you want endurance). Or select Special Ability of the rogue and gain 4 of the special abilities, but again you can only use them for 1 minute.

Your DM might not like you gaining 4 of the rogue's special abilities at once, but they're grouped together as one ability "Special Abilities" that increases in power as you level, so RAW you should get 4 of them (like a 19th level rogue). Most of them aren't really uber-powerful and are mostly defensive, so they'll save your butt for one fight, but that's about it.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I am thumbing through books now seeing what the best ability would be to choose...

My next character is planned as follows:

Factotum 8/Swashbucker 3/Chameleon 9 Build

Stats: 18, 16, 14, 13, 11, 10

Race: Human

1. Factotum (1) - Able Learner, Nymph's Kiss, Luck of Heroes, Flaw (undecided) (Bluff 4, Disguise 4, Sense Motive 4, Spellcraft 4)
2. Swashbuckler (1) - Weapon Finesse (free) (Bluff 1)
3. Swashbuckler (2) - Keen Intellect (Bluff 1) *Alternate Class Feature - Expeditious Retreat*
4. Swashbuckler (3) - +1 INT (Bluff 1)
5. Factotum (2) (Bluff 1, Disguise 4)
6. Factotum (3) - Knowledge Devotion
7. Chameleon (1)
8. Chameleon (2) - +1 INT
9. Chameleon (3) - Font of Inspiration x1
10. Chameleon (4)
11. Factotum (4)
12. Factotum (5) - Font of Inspiration x2, +1 INT
13. Factotum (6)
14. Factotum (7)
15. Factotum (8) - Font of Inspiration x3
16. Chameleon (5) - +1 INT
17. Chameleon (6)
18. Chameleon (7) - Font of Inspiration x4
19. Chameleon (8)
20. Chameleon (9) - +1 INT

I've tried to make it playable at all levels (at lvl 1 Factotum focus on hiding and ranged attacks, 2-4 you can be a fighter type, 5-20 Jack of All Trades style). I AM considering a 2nd flaw to add in some spice, but I figured I'd offer up a build that is alternate to "Factotum 20, FoI all feats" for ya.

Thanks, I like the idea behind this... at first I'm wondering, "Why low int" but then it kind of comes around well enough.

Though, I think I may try a Master thrower build.

I like the idea of being able to throw 8 daggers in a round :D

Yeah, whew!
That's much of the point of this build Aethios...is has tons of Int synergy. Some of the highlights of this build-

Int bonus to ALL skills except Chr based skills
Tons of skill points (+6 due to Nymph's Kiss + Human + Int)
Int to Damage (Swashbuckler & Factotum)
"Nova" ability of Factotum (the WIN for Factotum)
38 Int (18+ 5 inherent + 6 enhancement + 5 levels + 4 floating)
Knowledge Devotion synergy for +5 on attacks and damage for everything
Turn Undead
Divine Spellcasting (CL 18)
Arcane Spellcasting (CL 18)
+10 Inspiration Points per battle
Strong gish capabilities
Alternate capabilities with Swashbuckler (I prefer blur or expedition retreat)
Floating Feat (all sorts of greatness for this)
Double Aptitude (the WIN for chameleon)

I figure that this character, with enough time, can do just about anything. Maybe he's not artificer level for that, but pretty damn fun!

You cannot take Keen Intellect at third level. It is a Ancestor Feat from Oriental Adventures, the rules for which stipulate "Ancestor feats may not be taken at any time beyond character creation." The rules allow you to alter the Ancestor aspect of the feat to fit your campaign setting, but not the benefits or the rules governing them.

You would have to take Keen Intellect at first level if you wanted it.
