| #1sayntesinnerApr 04, 2009 22:18:47 | So I've got this Facty 5 I just took into Psion and was hoping I could get some ideas on how best to go with it. Until I can get a detailed desc of him up he's human and has stats STR12, DEX16, CON15, INT23*, WIS 13 and CHA 12. His Feats are: (flaw) murky-eyed: reroll concealment, pass both to hit (flaw) vulnerable: -1 to AC Two Weapon Fighting & Two weapon defense Exotic weapon: Broadblade Short sword (plan on retraining/replacing this when I can get the enchant put on it) Spellfire Wielder Quick Reconnoiter Psicrystal Affinity* and improved psicrystal Heroic Surge ( take an extra move or attack action 1/day per 4 levels) Powers Known: Crystal Shard, Precognition(Offense), Vigor, Detect Psionics and Inertial armor *House rule allowing stat +3 at first and +1 every odd level until 9th, and bonus feat granted by DM. I have him going into psychokinesis but am open to suggestions. The Facty spell ability already handles repair construct as an option so I don't need to worry about that (as he has a psicrystal). Not really sure I want to dip into the spellfire PrC either...so looking at a straight facty/psion build. Any ideas? Update: Apparently there is going to be NO psionic/magic transparency in the game I was just told... |
| #2karmmeApr 05, 2009 0:05:26 | Keep going with factotum until level 8 when you get cunning surge, the best ability in the game. Afterwards use your psionic stuff to either flesh out a gish or a character that can just produce a ton of damage in 1 round, by novaing (using all your IP for cunning surge and all your standard actions to manifest powers). |

Having the Facty Handbook on my fave list helps and that is one of the breakpoints...but like I said, since it is pretty much a straight facty/psion I'll get there anyway. The other thing is we currently have a human lycanthropic monk and an avariel sorcerer/favored soul as the group...which isn't too bad since last game our DM threw us up against a level 12 encounter (6 monstrous spiders..medium I think?) and the only one to die was the avariel due to low hit points and a fumble roll by the monk that hit him. After reading the DM section for XP (we were level 3 or 4) we traded in two of the spiders for a divine intervention (I called it diety pride) that raised the avariel :D |
| #4awaken_D_M_golemApr 06, 2009 17:09:28 | If you are locked into your choices ... Facto 5 / Psion 5 / Slayer 10 will work You are down on the top spells (powers), so you need to go sideways. Any power that you can share with your Psicrystal is the better choice. Go melee with both of you. At level 12-15, take Metamorph power and Metamorphic Transfer feat. This gives you a very versatile substitute for Shapechange. Considering you won't have 8th or 9th level powers, this is good enough and melee-able and share-able with the Psicrystal. Slayer can choose Undead as favored enemy, or whatver. Immune to Mind Affecting. Immune to Divinations. Good Stuff. Slayer is the SRD version of Illithid Slayer, just a little better. |
| #5sayntesinnerApr 06, 2009 19:45:28 | If you are locked into your choices ... Facto 5 / Psion 5 / Slayer 10 will work Problem I found with slayer (and pretty much ALL the PrCs) is that any upgrade to manifester is applicable only to power points and powers known. I actually want my psicrystal to advance so other than taking imp psicrystal a dozen times I won't see that happening with any PrC..except MAYBE the metamind as the RAW does not mention psicrystal advancement as the others do. That is the main reason I was going straight facty/psion. As said above the next break point for the facty is 8 but I plan on adding at least a few more levels in psion before another facty (the GM is rather insistant on rp so being something new he would focus on this new facet of his abilities for a bit before evening back out). We have a sorc/favored who wants to go stealth/illusion (hard play but a game shouldn't always be about making the easiest chars imo) and I'll likely talk to him about handling most of the magic/utility stuff so I can focus on the psionic aspects as I was told there will be no transparency (which blew my fortifying bedroll out since I'd have to get 2 of them...one for spells and one for powers, or just keep trying to find one that does both). Originally the idea I had was to be the all-around char the facty is intended and not a blaster (ironic since I took spellfire not for the attack but for the defense and healing) since that's what I usually play but it looks like that is where the char is heading anyway so I'm rollin with it. |
| #6sayntesinnerApr 06, 2009 21:55:11 | Another issue I was looking at is the choice between psicrystal and elemental envoy... Anyone have experience with this? |
| #7sayntesinnerApr 09, 2009 4:54:24 | So...I'm stuck with the crystal for now since I took too long. Apparently they've instituted a game deadline for char-tuning since I am somewhat indecisive. Not a problem really since I likely don't need another minion running around I have to worry about. }Still haven't gotten the character sheeted yet to post but I did update the first post for the level 6 feat. I found one on a forum that works similar to inertial armor except it's 2+(# psionic feats) as long as you're focused.{ *snip* I'm thinking this was a holdover from the 3.0 rules where inertial armor was a feat...anyway, took heroic surge instead (see above) So thinking about it I'm more in the mind of not turning the char into a straight blaster but instead having him use psionics for ranged and then move in for melee if need be.. Current powers are crystal shard, precog(offense) and vigor.. |
| #8phaedrusxyApr 09, 2009 12:24:52 | Your psicrystal is based of levels in psionic classes. Slayer is a psionic class.Psicrystal abilities are based on the owner’s levels in psionic classes. Levels from other classes do not count toward the owner’s level for purposes of psicrystal abilities. http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/classes/psion.htm#psicrystals I'd suggest taking Practiced Manifester, and then Metamorphic Transfer. Then you can gain the Supernatural abilities of anything you polymorph into, using any means available. I'd also suggest going with Shaper for your discipline, and using Psionic Minor Creation to make poison. Vigor is very nice, especially if you also get Share Pain and send half your damage to the psicrystal, then share Vigor with it to get double the normal hit points. The main thing is that you're going to be horribly limited on power points. So I'd forget anything that doesn't have a duration. Blasting is a complete waste of time, so I'd drop Crystal Shard. If you can retrain/reformat the psicrystal's Alertness feat (or if the DM rules that it gains hit dice and feats), then give it Mindsight from Lords of Madness. |
| #9sayntesinnerApr 09, 2009 14:24:05 | Powers Known: Beginning at 2nd level, a slayer gains additional power points per day and access to new powers as if she had also gained a level in whatever manifesting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained (bonus feats, metapsionic or item creation feats, psicrystal special abilities, and so on). That's where I think I have been getting hung up at then...they all specify no psicrystal advancement in the additional manifester levels but if the psicrystal goes on all psionic levels then I suppose that makes sense as it would be silly to have a psion 5/ slayer 5 with a psicrystal at level 14... Practiced manifester will definitely be the next feat..but as I said above the game is rp required and not just mechanics (that would be nice) so how could you explain being a practiced manifester at your first psionic level? That's why I couldn't take it (though with 5 levels of facty I could have taken the spellcasting which would have been utter nonsense). The thing about crystal shard is that it's a creation...not magical or psionic so it will be good for bypassing SR, PR, and it can't be dispelled. I'm sure you already know that though, obviously. The character has no range though and with the group it would be tactically deficient of me to have a straight melee character who isn't meant for melee. Psicrystals DO get feats. It was already discussed and because of the way it is worded as they have HD it is implied that they get feats. So I will have to look into that ;) As for discipline, I'm stuck with kineticism though as the game is already in play (unless I use something like the revision power...but was under the assumption that only worked for feats and skills). I understand you can share powers so wouldn't vigor jsut give us each the amount of hp? Unless that is what you mean by double I don't see how it would give us double. |
| #10phaedrusxyApr 09, 2009 14:34:22 | I understand you can share powers so wouldn't vigor jsut give us each the amount of hp? Unless that is what you mean by double I don't see how it would give us double. Yes, it gives you both the same amount of hit points. So if you spend 5 power points, you both get 25 temporary hit points. But with Share Pain, half your damage goes to the Psicrystal. So you benefit from both sets of temporary hit points as if they were your own, basically. Get it? So lets say you spend 3 pp to Share Pain, then 5 PP to get 25 temporary hit points, and share this to also give your psicrystal 25 temporary hit points. Then you get hit for 50 damage. The blow is entirely absorbed by the temporary hit points. So you basically got 50 temporary hit points for your 5 PPs (not counting the 3 for Share Pain). If you take the Link Power feat (Complete Psi), and a swift action power that only costs 1 power point (Adrenaline Surge works for psiwarriors... not sure about psions), you can refresh your Vigor every round by linking it to the swift action power, giving you the capacity to take an enormous beating without losing actions. |

Got it...thought that was what you were referring to but wanted to make sure. On another note, have to re-edit again. GM wants to see the feat and I had found it after browsing the forums for like 2 hours so the defesive mind ac feat is likely going to have to be replaced. [It was replaced with heroic surge..see top] |

I keep missing this feat....looked through the book a couple times and never found it. Anyone know the page? Also, in regards to the slayer PrC....it says you pick a psionic creature as your favored enemy. Plus with most of the class abilities working to thwart psionics (it seemed to me anyway) I don't know how useful that would be in a game where the DM has stated there is no magic/psionic transparency... |
| #13phaedrusxyMay 01, 2009 15:05:51 | Slayer is the Eldritch Knight of Psionics. The extra abilities it gets beyond good BAB and nearly full manifesting are gravy. Some of them should still work, anyway, because they explicity say they work against spells, too. For example: Lucid Buffer (Ex) This would include spells, spell-likes, and supernatural abilities, as well as psionic powers. Cerebral Blind (Su) Cerebral Immunity (Su) These are the only abilities worth a crap, anyway (other than full BAB and nearly full manifesting...). Non-transparency is actually a good thing for you. It basically makes psionics broken. There is a reason that transparency is the default. Enjoy running around inside an Antimagic Field while enjoying full use of your powers. Hell, that would be worth buying a Ring of Spell Storing for. |

For example: I must have been tired or misreading it then...the transparency issue works for items too though. I had asked because I was looking for a fortifying bedroll and they said no, a standard one would NOT allow powers to be regained. So I've had to look for one that does both (which she makes a low percentage) since not only do I have the psion powers but the arcane dilettante ability from factotum. I'm presuming that's why you said to buy a ring of spell storing? For the Power point storage? |
| #15phaedrusxyMay 01, 2009 21:31:54 | I'm presuming that's why you said to buy a ring of spell storing? For the Power point storage? No. That's to get a friendly caster to put an Antimagic Field in. In a non-transparency game, your psionic powers will work inside one. |
| #16sayntesinnerMay 02, 2009 2:11:54 | No. That's to get a friendly caster to put an Antimagic Field in. In a non-transparency game, your psionic powers will work inside one. Oh....nice. And devious too :D Only problem I see is the level requirement for the different "sizes" of rings (3, 5 and 10 levels) and with Antimagic field being at lowest a 6th you'd still need the 200k major ring. Still a good idea though. Thanks! |
