So taken right from the Charlatan Pr-Class in Dragon # 335:

Feigned Casting (Ex):
At 2nd level the time a charlatan practices imitating gesturesand arcane words pays off, allowing her to pretend to cast any arcane or divine spell (as appropriate to ger disguise). Onlookers must defeat the charlatan's bludd check with an opposed Spellcraft or sense motive check to detect teh ruse. Those who fail this check believe the charlatan cast a spell, per her desire. The charlatan cannot fake a spell with an obvious visual effect, such as fireball, or wall of stone, but spells such as detect magic and mind blank are prefect examples. Those who cannot both see and hear the charlatan gain a +4 bonus on their opposed checks. The charlatan's false spell does not affect its targets and any creature targeted knows that "spell" has no effect.

The ability description looks to me like any surrounding people will simply believe that you have cast your intended spell, not like you actually gain any effects (which, if you ask me, shouldn't require a class feature - a bluff check from someone reasonably versed in magic ought to do it, but that's just my opinion)

Faking a Protection from Evil might discourage hostile casters from using mind control or make summoned creatures pick other targets if they're intelligent enough to recognise the spell. Should either of them decide to do it anyway, though, they'd find it no more difficult than usual.
