Made a Petal Sorcerer and here's what I've got in mind. Let me know if you can think of any ways of making the feats more synergistic:

1st level feat: Explosive spell
3rd level feat: Energy Substitution (Electricity)
6th level feat: Arcane Thesis: Fireball (now the explosive spell only uses 4th level slots)
9th level feat: Arcane Thesis: Scorching Ray
12th level feat: Energy Admixture
15th level feat: Split Ray
18th level feat: Twin Spell

The principle goal was to get the admixture going as soon as he has the spell slots for it. But then I thought going explosive spell to knock the mobs prone would be fun for the fighters to get their AoOs. Then I thought going Split Ray would be fun for an additional 8d6 of damage with Admixture. Lastly I tried to shoehorn in a couple of damage amplification feats like empower and maximize, but I'm out of spots to put them along with widen spell.

great idea... but i would suggest this:

1st level feat: Empower Spell
3rd level feat: Versatile Caster
6th level feat: Arcane Thesis: Scorching Ray
9th level feat: Practical Metamagic(Empower Spell)
12th level feat: Twin Spell
15th level feat: Split Ray
18th level feat: Practical Metamagic(Split Ray)

Practical Metamagic reduces the cost by 1 ... so you can cast a Twinned Empowered Split ray Scorching ray(8 rays doing (1.5 x 4d6) each) as a 7th lvl spell

I like the idea carnivore, but fire resistance/immunity will hurt it. What if you took out empowered and PM empowered and toss on the energy sub/admixture. You'd be a bit more versatile this way.

Energy admixture is nice, but energy sub... meh. IF you have a feat or two to spare, go Archmage and take the master of elements ability. This way, you can also tailor your spells to fit the vulnerabilities of every enemy.

That's the route I'd like to do with this build. Plus he's already 8th level and has Energy Sub and Explosive Spell. I'm thinking Arcane Thesis, Split Ray, and Energy Admixture is the way to go as that'd be 32d6 at 12th level with scorching ray as a 6th lvl spell.

if he already has Explosive spell and Energy admixture... and is 8th lvl

try this:

1st level feat: Explosive spell
3rd level feat: Energy Substitution (Electricity)
6th level feat: Arcane Thesis: Fireball (now the explosive spell only uses 4th level slots)
9th level feat: Practical Metamagic(Explosive spell)
12th level feat: Versatile Caster
15th level feat: Energy admixture
18th level feat: Practical Metamagic(Energy admixture)

focus on one thing....

also
Arcane Thesis, Split Ray, and Energy Admixture is the way to go as that'd be 32d6 at 12th level with scorching ray as a 6th lvl spell.

Split ray = +2 lvl
Energy Admixture= +4lvl
Acrane thesis = -1 to Total (not to each metamagic added... FAQ verifies this)
Scorching ray = 2nd lvl

total = 7th lvl spell total

Scorching Ray(arcane thesis) and Energy Admixture would be better than Explosive Spell and energy admixture and Fireball

Actually, Arcane Thesis got unnerfed in the errata :D
It now reduces the cost for each metamagic feat by 1, even into the negative slot adjustments with things like Energy Substitution. The final slot adjustment after everything has been applied can't be less than +0 though.

THANK GOD!

**Edit**

Sure enough, it unnerfs it quite well. So applying Split Ray (+1) makes it 3rd lvl + Energy Admixture (+3) makes it a 6th level spell. And if I want to blast away with low level slots, just use Energy Sub and it's only using 1st level slots. Tack on Split Ray with Energy Sub and it's back up to 2nd level slots. Nice!

Can energy sub be used with an identical energy type for effectively double damage? Would it then reduce standard energy type spells by one spell level? Eg. Energy Sub (Fire) + Scorching Ray.

I don't think you can use Energy Substitution (Fire) on a [Fire] spell, but Energy Admixture works fine if you want to double your damage.

Actually all fire-based blasters-ESPECIALLY Elemental Savants, should consider a 1 or 2 level dip in Sanctified One of Kord.
Losing a caster level is bad, yes...but having all your fire spells deal typeless damage is very, very good.
And the saving throws are very nice.

Suddenly Energy Substitution(Fire) turns elemental damage into typeless.

Easy guys.

1. Make your scorching ray build
2. Take one level of Sanctified One (Kord) and make sure that fire damage is Divine.
3. Profit like a televangelist

Yeah, that's what I meant. And that Sanctified Kord making elemental damage untyped is that sort of thing our DM would rule as munchkining.

Yeah, that's what I meant. And that Sanctified Kord making elemental damage untyped is that sort of thing our DM would rule as munchkining.

If that's too strong for your DM, try Paragnostic Apostle instead. One of the choices on ability is to have half the energy damage from an energy based offensive spell be untyped divine energy(like flame strike) vs a creature of an alignment type opposite your own, chosen when you get the ability.
For example, if you're a Chaotic Good blaster mage of death, you'd pick either Lawful or Evil and get to apply the ability against those enemies.

Reasons why more DMs might allow it:

1st: it only half bypasses immunity, so at worst your DM will only hit you half as hard.

2nd: there are still a huge number of neutral monsters that your DM can use every so often if he feels he has to "balance the ability's effect on the game."
You can use this to your advantage if your DM is having trouble deciding to allow it.

3rd: The ability requires an organizational tie. And organizational ties mean plot hooks and roleplaying opurtunities. (more ammo against DM there)

It also makes more sense rpwise for an arcane caster to learn the secret mysteries of shaping his energy spells against his enemies from a society of fellow spellcasters than being the lapdog to the god of physical strength.

Oh, and no lost caster level.
