Hello  , this is the first time I make a thread in this forum, and I will play for the first time in my life(I have 19) with some friends D&D, I already read some parts of the Players Handbook, and I don't know what class I want for my character.

The rules for this campaign are simple, Core 3.5 D&D, with no multiclass. I want to choose, Fighter because I tend to play tanks in most of games, I love receiving and giving blows, but I feel that the gameplay of the fighter is too simple, buy some sword and shield and slash and kill everyone while you are being hitted, so I wanted to try the ranger, I love 2 weapons and the idea of a companion is really cool but I feel that the ranger is a jack of all trades but isn't good at anything.

I really don't understand a lot of the skills and feats, or at least I can't remember them, but what should I become:

Ranger? A guy that scouts, search for information and helps the party in forests and surviving in different environments with good melee combat and ranged, and a riding animal(I don't know how it works, but I know it's possible to be a riding ranger and fight in your animal companion).

Fighters? A lot of hitpoints, a lot of AC, any armor, any weapon, any shields... a Tank(That's all I need).

Could you help me to choose? and you give me tips about what skills and feats to choose... This is really my first time playing and I don't want to be a burden for my party so if you can help me I would be very gratefull

Try BARBARIAN instead.

Sorry if I am not being more help.  The question is hard to answer properly and depends on what level you are playing at an how much experience people have with the game.  I am suggesting Barbarian because it is much simplier to figure out than the Fighter as Fighter requires you to master Feats to make the most of it.

Consider going Archery Style Ranger and using a Two Handed melee wepaon (Great Sword, Guisarme, Spiked Chain, Deck Brush, whatever) and Strength Power Attack. You've got SOME ranged ability that way without much Dex requirement and can be fairly effective in melee. Don't dump Int (skills) or Wis (spells, even in Core they don't suck that much).
