a friend of mine is making a half-orc fighter/barbarian. hes got well rounded numbers, with an 18 in str, and a 16 in dex, with a 13 in cons (i told him he should probably have the 16 there, but he is new to the game.) he jokingly said something about fighting with 2 large shields. i love the idea.

is there anything/has something like this been done before? i think his backup weapon should be a portable ram :D but we;ll see.

thoughts on fighting with 2 huge shields?

would his ac go up really high?

would he be able to do decent damage? hes got a good str modifier.

as a half orc, what would be interesting to add to this idea?

his name is tank. he likes to smash things. and yell. and sometimes shout.

thoughts and ideas?

Bonuses from two of the same source do not stack. Thus shield bonuses fail to increase your AC any further than the highest bonus available from a single shield.

Most high-damage characters tend to go with the Two Handed Weapon (THW) options, as that allows you to add twice the damage through Power Attack (feat) rather than once as with single-handed weapon. We aren't even going to start with the Two Weapon Fighting issues.

Shields can have spikes (enchanted separately) as well as have options to be thrown (a la Captain America) for additional offensive punch. However, for optimal damage a big bruiser by the name of Tank would be better off using a greatsword for the 2d6 damage and increased crit range.

Barbarians have some interesting alternate class features, including rage alternatives such as whirling frenzy (additional attacks per round that also stack with haste effects are always fun). I am partial to the streetfighter options from Wizard's Cityscape web enhancement:

Stacking the critical enhancement with the greatsword and improved critical, you crit on a 15-20.

Tack on the Lion Totem from the Complete Champion (not the Unearthed Arcana, completely different class features named the same), you gain the ability to full attack after a charge.

Dual wield Lion Shields for 15 attacks per round.

Well, you might want to check out PLot & Poison, its a Drow 3.0 book but it has a feat called Double Shielding, Shield Mastery and Shield Specialization.
With those you will be able to dual wield 2 large shields, get the AC bonus for both, attack with 2 weapon cahin and keep the shield bonus after.
Something to think about if you are cool with 3.0.

You should post 3.0 in this thread's first post like you did in your other one.
