| #1Unbalanced_flyJan 28, 2013 15:36:09 | So I initially was wanting an unarmed streetfighter style character, but seeing as making that work without going monk or unarmed swordsage takes way too much feat investment, I've decided to go for a scythe fighter which I've always wanted to do as well. During discussions on what would work, the Warforged Juggernaut was mentioned which I very much liked the sound of. I've made up a rough build but as you can see there are a few blanks and I'm sure I'm not doing this the most efficient way... Thanks for any help. Warforged STR: 17 DEX: 10 CON: 18 INT: 12 WIS: 7 CHA: 7 1. Barbarian – Rage 1/day, Illiteracy, Fast Movement Feat: Adamantine Body 2. Fighter – Fighter Bonus Feat: Weapon Focus (Scythe) 3. Barbarian – Uncanny Dodge Feat: Improved Initiative 4. Fighter – Fighter Bonus Feat: Power Attack +1 STR 5. Barbarian – Trap Sense +1 6. Fighter – Feat: Improved Bullrush 7. Barbarian – Rage 2/day 8. Fighter – Fighter Bonus Feat: Weapon Specialization (Scythe) +1 INT 9. ??? Feat: Combat Expertise 10. Warforged Juggernaut – Armor Spikes 1D6, Expert Bull Rush, Powerful Charge, Reserved 11. Warforged Juggernaut – Charge Bonus +1, Construct Perfection I, Extended Charge 12. Warforged Juggernaut – Construct Perfection II, Healing Immunity, Superior Bull Rush Feat: Improved Feint, +1 STR 13. Warforged Juggernaut – Armor Spikes 1D8, Bonus on Charge +2, Construct Perfection III 14. Warforged Juggernaut – Construct Perfection IV, Greater Powerful Charge 15. Streetfighter – Always Ready +1, Streetwise Feat: ?? 16. Streetfighter – Stand Tough 1/day +1 STR 17. Streetfighter – Always Ready +2, Sneak Attack 1D6 18. Streetfighter – Stand Tough 2/day Feat: ?? 19. Streetfighter – Always Ready +3, Uncanny Dodge 20. ??? NOTE: Multiclass exp penalties apply. |
| #2StevenOJan 28, 2013 16:07:57 | IIRC it isn't even worth mentioning "Fast Movement" from Barbarian when you take Adamantine Body because that puts you in "heavy armor" which negates the extra movement. |
| #3LashiusJan 28, 2013 16:27:03 | Actually it does worse than negate the bonus, barbarians fast movement only functions in light armor, so essential you lose the class feature all together. You would be better off taking the lion totem variant from complete champion which would give you pounce. |
| #4StevenOJan 28, 2013 16:42:38 | Actually it does worse than negate the bonus, barbarians fast movement only functions in light armor, so essential you lose the class feature all together. You would be better off taking the lion totem variant from complete champion which would give you pounce. Sorry Lashius but you are incorrect. Fast Movement also functions when wearing medium armor although you can't be carrying a heavy load. In normal circumstances Fast Movement would just cancel out the speed penalty most creatures would take for wearing medium armor. Of course none of that excuses medium armor for being some of the least effective armors in the game. While you are wrong about the armor restrictions to get Fast Movement I completely agree with your solution which is why I brought up the complication in the first place. |
| #5alsebraJan 28, 2013 17:47:56 | Where's the link to the substitution post? That may be a worthwhile link here... |
| #6LashiusJan 28, 2013 17:55:22 | Actually it does worse than negate the bonus, barbarians fast movement only functions in light armor, so essential you lose the class feature all together. My bad, it's been a wile since I actually read fast movement in lue of an alternative feature. |
| #7draco1119Jan 28, 2013 18:00:42 | Substitute the regular Barbarian levels for Lion Spirit Totem (Complete Champion) and Wolf Totem (Unearthed Arcana). Those give you Pounce in exchange for a class feature you can't use anyway and Improved Trip (in exchange for Uncanny Dodge?). |
| #8LashiusJan 28, 2013 18:10:13 | I thought you couldn't mix different totems for barbarian? |
| #9Maat_MonsJan 28, 2013 18:18:00 | You might want to use the dungeoncrasher alternative class feature (Dungeonscape) for fighter. At fighter level 2, you give up your bonus feat and gain the ability to deal 4d6+2*str damage whenever you bull rush someone into a wall. At fighter level 6, you give up your bonus feat to increase the damage to 8d6+3*str. I'm not a fan of barbarian levels beyond the first one or two. You can take the extra rage feat (Complete Warrior) for +2 uses of rage per day. Even with the streetfighter's stand tough ability being upgraded to negating the attack, it's still not that impressive. |
| #10KruskJan 28, 2013 18:22:30 | I thought you couldn't mix different totems for barbarian? There is no reason you can't, but it will probably cause a few DMs to raise an eyebrow. Just ask them to reflavor your wolf trip to a lioness tripping a gazelle or something. |
| #11LashiusJan 28, 2013 18:35:52 | I thought you couldn't mix different totems for barbarian? Actually I just checked in to it, and unearthed arcana has a section about multiclassing and class variants. Oddly enough it says you shouldn't allow the mixing of barbarian totems, however it seems the book makes the distinction that you would have to multiclass into the separate totems which is why it shouldn't be allowed. Even more odd is that the same section says it should be okay for a person to multiclass from urban ranger to planar ranger to regular ranger just fine. Complete champion on the other hand, with it's own separate barbarian totem variants, seems to green light multiple totems. My conclusion, I wouldn't have a problem with mixing complete champion totems with unearthed arcana totems, and would probably feel fine with same thing for UEA totems, I think the developers just made it more needlessly complicated than it aught to be. |

Stand tough could come in handy. The bonus to initiative really appeals to me. I like the idea of being this big cumbersome mass of metal, yet somehow, I'm always first in battle with a charge or a bullrush. And the flavour of the class is really what appeals to me most... Also, thanks everyone for the Lion Totem recommendation! I just looked up pounce and it will be awesome for my character. Cheers. |
| #13alsebraJan 28, 2013 18:49:21 | I'd justify it thusly: Your UA totem animal is based on what tribe you're from, your CC totem animal is your own personal spiritual totem. Generally, your spiritual totem would be the same as your tribal totem, but things could happen. |
| #14draco1119Jan 28, 2013 19:25:13 | There are better ways to boost your initiative, often with items. Don't waste a good build with bad stuff "for flavor". Ask Tempest; he's written an entire philosophy on that. |

Ask Tempest; he's written an entire philosophy on that. Our campaigns are often very light on magic items, so I definitely can't rely on items for any kind of initiative boost. |
| #16draco1119Jan 28, 2013 20:14:04 | Oh, gods! I just noticed - DROP IMPROVED FEINT!!! ![]() |
| #17Unbalanced_flyJan 28, 2013 20:33:04 | Oh, gods! I just noticed - DROP IMPROVED FEINT!!! I only got it because I needed it for Streetfighter. What is an alternative PrC which could improve my initiative and perhaps give me DR or something along those lines?? |
| #18draco1119Jan 28, 2013 21:13:52 | Ill have to look into that. But you're already getting DR from the Juggernaut and/or Adamantine Body, aren't you? |
| #19Unbalanced_flyJan 28, 2013 21:26:13 | Ill have to look into that. But you're already getting DR from the Juggernaut and/or Adamantine Body, aren't you? My bad. I forgot that they don't stack >.< Improving my initiatve and improving my speed without actually having to invest ability points into my dex is primarily what I'd like to gain out of the other PrC. Either that, or ditch that idea completely, and work on enhancing my rage abilities and brute strength. |
| #20draco1119Jan 28, 2013 21:36:53 | I'd go for that. ![]() |
| #21Maat_MonsJan 28, 2013 22:21:53 | If you're interested in DR, the thick-skinned feat (Savage Species) would be the easiest boost. It increases your existing DR by two. If you're interested in initiative, the first warforged fighter substitution level (Races of Eberron) gives you +3 to initiative instead of the normal bonus feat. |
| #22Unbalanced_flyJan 28, 2013 23:18:42 |
Savage Species book isn't allowed in this campaign. But I'm glad you pointed out the warforged substitution level option (with a source), definitely will be using that. |
| #23draco1119Jan 28, 2013 23:25:27 | Can I ask why you want to use a scythe? |
| #24Unbalanced_flyJan 28, 2013 23:29:20 | Can I ask why you want to use a scythe? No mechanical/functional reason. I just think they're really awesome. I like the idea of resembling Death :P |
| #25draco1119Jan 29, 2013 0:48:49 | I strongly advise against a scythe. There's literally nothing a scythe can do that a spiked chain can't do better - except for looking like a dood wielding a scythe. ![]() |

There's literally nothing a scythe can do that a spiked chain can't do better - except for looking like a dood wielding a scythe. Naaah. Scythe is pretty non-negotiable. It was either that or unarmed and unarmed just won't work, so scythe it is. |
| #27Slagger_the_ChuulJan 29, 2013 4:56:46 | I strongly advise against a scythe. There's literally nothing a scythe can do that a spiked chain can't do better - except for looking like a dood wielding a scythe. And not requiring a proficiency feat. It's times like this I wish my old Whirling Reaper prestige class was official material instead of something I wrote for UnCon. There aren't really any cool official things designed specifically for use with the scythe. |
| #28draco1119Jan 29, 2013 9:09:54 | Well, I've got a couple ideas. I'll post them later. How to you feel about being evil? |
| #29Unbalanced_flyJan 29, 2013 13:08:35 | Well, I've got a couple ideas. I'll post them later. How to you feel about being evil? Chaotic I can probably deal with but not evil. Our characters always seem to end up being evil, so the DM has ruled that this campaign will be a generally good campaign. I was thinking neutral good or chaotic good. Could easily change this to true neutral or chaotic neutral, but I don't think he'd be happy with evil... |
| #30draco1119Jan 29, 2013 13:13:34 | That means the Disciple of Dispater is out. ![]() You ok with a basic warrior-type with high initiative, then? |
| #31frost.fireJan 29, 2013 14:16:21 | Maybe since it Is houseruled that he must be good you could reflavour disciple of dispater? |
| #32Unbalanced_flyJan 29, 2013 15:23:28 | Maybe since it Is houseruled that he must be good you could reflavour disciple of dispater? Book of Vile Darkness is another rulebook not allowed for this campaign :/ Allowed books: PHB I, II All Eberron books All "Complete ..." books Though with the right argument I may be able to sway the DM. Would rather not have to try though. Heavy, brute, charge/bullrush based warrior with high initiative certainly sounds like the direction this is leading... |
| #33Unbalanced_flyJan 29, 2013 15:28:58 | How the current revision on character build is looking: Warforged STR: 17 DEX: 10 CON: 18 INT: 12 WIS: 7 CHA: 7 1. Barbarian (Lion Totem) – Rage 1/day, Illiteracy, Pounce Feat: Adamantine Body 2. Fighter (Warforged) – Battle Hardened 3. Barbarian (Lion Totem) – Uncanny Dodge Feat: Weapon Focus (Scythe) 4. Warforged Juggernaut – Armor Spikes 1D6, Expert Bull Rush, Powerful Charge, Reserved 8. Warforged Juggernaut – Charge Bonus +1, Construct Perfection I, Extended Charge 9. Warforged Juggernaut – Construct Perfection II, Healing Immunity, Superior Bull Rush Feat: Extra Rage, +1 STR 10. | #34Maat_MonsJan 29, 2013 16:08:33 | I don't understand why you're going three levels each in barbarian and fighter. Fighter is you racial favored class. You can mix the two in any ratio you want without xp penalties. |
| #35draco1119Jan 29, 2013 16:29:58 | You think you can talk your DM into allowing some ToB? Some Warblade could suit you well, since it gets a class bonus to initiative. |
| #36frost.fireJan 29, 2013 16:38:07 | I would definitly cut one level of barb for one fighter level for a bonus feat see if you can pick up combat brute maybe or leap attack to improve your power attacks more. I'd also look into shock trooper, if you need to free up feats look into eliminating greater powerful charge (I think the powerful charcge is a pre req for something right) also I know your attached to the scythe but look into having a back up reach weapon such as a glaive since the armour spikes cover your close range. Alse you get a slight safety net in range before you bullrush them hard into a wall for maximum damage. |

I'm so foreign to multiclass rules as we usually don't use them at all. But I was under the impression that if you choose to multiclass to multiple base classes you need to keep the level difference between the two to no more than 2 levels or suffer penalties. In saying that, I can still drop one level of Barbarian for another Fighter level. Dropping Trap Sense (which doesn't bother me one bit) and gaining another bonus feat. You think you can talk your DM into allowing some ToB? Some Warblade could suit you well, since it gets a class bonus to initiative. Considering I was originally wanting to go for a Swordsage and he seemed to have no objections, dropping a bit into Warblade shouldn't be a problem. Though, again, I need to be conscious of multiclass rules. Which I'm clearly not entirely clear on :S I would definitly cut one level of barb for one fighter level for a bonus feat see if you can pick up combat brute maybe or leap attack to improve your power attacks more. Switching out a Barb level for Fighter is definitely wise. I'll do that for sure. Leap attack also appeals. So I might use the extra feat on picking that up. |
| #39draco1119Jan 29, 2013 18:03:40 | I'll work on it tonight. Right now I'm dealing with tired kids. |
| #40Maat_MonsJan 29, 2013 18:03:54 | You can read up on it on multiclass xp penalties on page 60 of the Player's Handbook. Basically, all your base classes other than your racial favored class need to be within one level of each other, but your racial favored class can be any level. As an annoying complication, Wizards of the Coast forgot to print the rule saying prestige classes don't count for multiclass xp penalty in any 3.5 book. The 3.0 Dungeon Master's Guide had the rule, and the 3.5 FAQ notes that it's supposed to work the same way in 3.5. They never actually put that into errata though. |
| #41SeeronJan 30, 2013 2:49:32 | when you drop a level of barb for a fighter level you ciuld take ss without penalty csuse you would end up with ss1 / barb 2 / fighter 4. fighter as your fav class doesnt count in and ss and barb are only 1 level away from each other and so will cause no penalty |

| #43draco1119Jan 30, 2013 6:50:44 | I really like the Dungeoncrasher ideas, and the racial fighter level, but that's going to slow your damage a bit. At what level are you starting? Not sure that it matters much, but I'd go something like this: 1) Lion Totem Barbarian 1 (Adamantine Body) (Rage 1/day, Pounce) 2) Warforged Fighter (Battle Hardened: +3 init, +3 save vs fear) 3) Fighter 2 (Power Attack, Dungeoncrasher) 4) Fighter 3 (+1 Str) 5) Fighter 4 (Improved Bull Rush*) 6) Warforged Juggernaut 1 (Shock Trooper) 7) Warforged Juggernaut 2 8) Warforged Juggernaut 3 (+1 Str) 9) Warforged Juggernaut 4 (Leap Attack) 10) Warforged Juggernaut 5 11) Warblade 1 (Initiator level 6) 12) Wolf Totem Barbarian 2 (Quick Reconnoiter, Improved Trip*) 13) Fighter 5 14) Fighter 6 (Dungeoncrasher) 15) Fighter 7 (Open) 16) Warblade 2 (Initiator level 9) 17) Fighter 8 (Improved Initiative*) 18) Fighter 9 (Open) 19) Warblade 3 (Initiator level 11) 20) Fighter 10 (Open*) |
| #44draco1119Jan 30, 2013 6:53:06 | Oh, if you switch Dex & Int, you can use the open feats for things like Combat Reflexes & Robillar's Gambit. If you don't switch, then you can cut a level each of Barbarian & Warblade, take 2 more levels of fighter, and take Combat Expertise & Improved Trip. |
| #45EruditeApeJan 30, 2013 7:49:11 | Draco, it's Lion Spirit Totem. Lion Totem is something else in UA. |
| #46draco1119Jan 30, 2013 8:27:16 | Crap. I did forget "Spirit". ![]() That's what I meant; it's just too much of a pain in the ass to edit from a phone. |
| #47Slagger_the_ChuulJan 30, 2013 9:04:53 | If you want to be accurate, the alternative class feature's name is Spiritual Totem. I don't know of any official examples describing the variant for a specific totem, but it would probably be written as something like "Spiritual Totem (lion)", or "Spiritual Totem: Lion Totem", or maybe "Lion Spiritual Totem" (in the same style as Unearthed Arcana). |
| #48EruditeApeJan 30, 2013 17:39:06 | Crap. You're right. I really am the king of Depristan. |
| #49Unbalanced_flyJan 30, 2013 18:18:54 | I really like the Dungeoncrasher ideas, and the racial fighter level, but that's going to slow your damage a bit. At what level are you starting? As far as I'm aware we'll be starting at level 1. I spoke to the DM and he said he really would rather not involve ToB :/ Looking around, I see some feat combos that work well with the Dungeoncrasher fighter variant, so that seems like a fairly wise move. |
| #50draco1119Jan 31, 2013 14:45:01 | How about Brb 2/Ftr 10/Warforged Juggernaut 5/Battle Trickster 3? |
| #51Unbalanced_flyJan 31, 2013 15:15:28 | Never looked at/used skill tricks before, but after a quick look I do like the look of that... Thanks for all the help! On the downside our DM is now considering switching to Pathfinder and wants to restrict us to Pathfinder only races/classes/rules etc. -__- Hopefully that won't happen, but we shall see. Thanks again. |
