| #1hobbitt_killerApr 29, 2008 11:51:17 | Hello all, I'll be starting a Dawn of Defiance campaign and need a little help with my character. I'd like to play a gunslinger type. Not the dual wielding, multiple shot type, that's been done. I'd like the William Munny type where reputation is a huge factor. This guy will carry one blaster and be lightning quick and lethal with it. He'll also have the ability to intstill fear wherever he goes. From RT's build thread, I'm looking at a combination of Tony Montana and the Sniper build but with a focus on pistols. Is this viable? I think I can make it work but I am not familiar enough yet with the rules to know the best way to go about it. I'm away from the books now, but I will try to get up a build skeleton later on if I can. Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

| #3hobbitt_killerApr 30, 2008 13:39:31 | This is what I came up with: William Munny Species: Human Str 12 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 13 Wis 12 Cha 13 Initial trained Skills: Use the Force, Endurance, Initiative, Perception, Pilot, Mechanics, Survival Level by level (talents, Force techniques, and Force secrets are in italics, feats are in bold) 1. Scout 1 - Acute Senses, Force Sensitive, Vehicular Combat, Scout starting feats 2. Soldier 1 - Devastating Attack, Light Armor Proficiency 3. Scoundrel 1 - Dastardly Strike, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot 4. Scout 2 - Deadeye (increase cha and int, train Persuasion) 5. Scout 3 - Keen Shot 6. Soldier 2 - Quick Draw, Skill Training: Stealth 7. Soldier 3 - Devastating Attack 8. Bounty Hunter 1 - Hunter's Mark (increase dex and int) 9. Gunslinger 1 - Debilitating Shot, Force Training: Mind Trick, Force Surge 10. Crime Lord 1 - Adept Negotiator 11. Crime Lord 2 - Master Negotiator 12. Crime Lord 3 - Weaken Resolve, Skill Focus: Persuasion, (increase dex and int, train Deception) 13. Crime Lord 4 - Improved Weaken Resolve 14. Gunslinger 2 15. Gunslinger 3 - Fool's Luck, Skill Focus: Pilot 16. Gunslinger 4 - (increase dex and cha) 17. Gunslinger 5 - Knockdown Shot 18. Gunslinger 6 - Careful Shot 19. Soldier 4 - Weapon Focus: Pistols 20. Soldier 5 - Weapon Specialization: Pistols, (increase dex and cha) Thoughts? |
| #4gamorrean_hardcaseMay 01, 2008 0:04:03 | This is what I came up with: Very very not legal build here. You have not met the requirements to enter Crime lord (missing Skill Training (Deception)), Crime lord talents cannot be used to get access to Jedi Consular talents, Weaken Resolve has Presence as a prereq, etc. And those are just some of my reservations about legal building. This is far from an optimized build. Force Sensitivity with only 1 Force training and no Skill Focus (UtF), Vehicular combat without SF Pilot until 15th, insufficient Con for Shake It Off starting feat, Devastating Attack twice (once each for different weapon groups, because they don't stack; Get Greater Devastating Attack from Elite Trooper for that)... Alright, so let's give you a simple build to work up from, as a Gunslinging Crimelord you need access to the skills Persuasion & Deception, the feats PBS/Precise Shot/Quickdraw, and 1 talent from Fortune/Misfortune/Lineage. All (except quickdraw which requires BAB 1) are accomplished with you starting as first level in scoundrel. 1 Scoundrel: Pistol, Simple weapons, PBS, Precise Shot, 1 free if human, Fortune or Misfortune talent (suggest dastardly strike or fool's luck depending on focus), skills (Perception, Initiative, Persuasion, Deception, Stealth) (Minimum Int 10, 12 nonhuman) From there it depends on how you want to maim the bad guys with your pistols and intimidation. If you want to use Adept/Master Negotiator, nows the time to develop those talents. 2 Jedi Adept Negotiator Force Sensitive or Lightsaber (because force sensitivity draws all sorts of bad attention and you have to spend lots and lots of feats on it, I'd grab Lightsaber and never use it.) 3 Jedi Quickdraw, Skill Focus: Persuasion 4 Jedi Master Negotiator Alternatively, if you don't want those talents, now is the time to grab some soldier levels 2 Soldier Devastating Attack Pistols Lightarmor 3 Soldier Quickdraw, Weapon Focus Pistols 4 Soldier Weapon Spec Pistols If you want to get into bounty hunter, here's a good time for those skills. 5 Scout Acute Senses Rifle 6 Scout Careful Shot or Skill Focus (Persuasion), Skill Training(Survival) 7 Scout Keen Shot Here you can enter any of Gunslinger (for Debilitating Shot), Bounty Hunter for Hunter's Mark, or Crimelord Presence, Weaken Resolve, Improved Weaken Resolve. 8 Gunslinger Debilitating Shot 9 Bounty Hunter Hunter's Mark, Deadeye 10 Crimelord Presence 11 Crimelord Weaken Resolve 12 Crimelord Improved Weaken Resolve 1 free From there, you can build up gunslinger for damage/gun tricks/Fool's luck, possibly building into Elite Trooper (expensive) for Greater Debilitating, more crimelord for inspire fear I-III, etc. Don't let your BAB fall too much, as you are a shooter first and foremost. Basic tactics: Aim and pop them the enemy for somewhere between -2 and -5 condition track damage and panic them into flight with Improved Weaken Resolve, then call them out with master adept to finish them off. I've got better builds, but I think this is what you wanted. A smooth talking, fear inspiring, gunslinging bad dude. |
| #5hobbitt_killerMay 01, 2008 8:24:26 | Thanks for the input. This is what I needed. I did that build from memory and really didn't look hard at whether or not it was legal. I must admit, part of that was intentional. Nothing garners feedback better than 'wrongness'. At least this board is a bit more forgiving than the the DnD CO board. ![]() I really like what you did with this, but now you've got me curious. 1. In your opinion, is the jedi route or the soldier route a better choice? 2. You said you have better builds than this, I'd love to see what you have. 3. I'd like to somehow fit in some piloting ability. My concept is evolving more towards Mal from Firefly at this point. Thanks again. |
| #6gamorrean_hardcaseMay 01, 2008 11:49:50 | Hope I didn't sound too crabby. It was late :D Jedi and Soldier builds both have something to benefit from, so I'd put them at equal footing. It really depends more on if you want to talk your way into/out of situations or if your pistol does your talking. My "better" build is a personal opinion made for the intent of being the deadliest trick shot in the 'verse (which does 9d6 sneak attack damage). No it really isn't the be all end all of damage, and it could really use some more gunslinger talents, but I wanted it pure sneak attack for asthetics. Best trick shot in the 'verse Suggest races: Twi'lek, Nemoidian; Human Suggested 28 point buy (before modification): Str 10 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 12 Wis 14 Cha 14; Wis is high since in the long run it is your worst save. However, feel free to drop it in favor of higher Cha/Dex, or bump Int for an extra skill. 1 Scoundrel Sneak Attack, Pistol, Simple, Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot Skills (Deception, Stealth, Initiative, Perception) Min Int 8, 10 nonhuman 2 Scoundrel Skill Focus: Deception 3 Scoundrel Sneak Attack Acrobatic Strike 4 Scoundrel Quickdraw 5 Scoundrel Sneak Attack 6 Scoundrel Skill Focus: Stealth, Charging Fire 7 Scoundrel Sneak Attack 8 Gunslinger Deceptive Shot 9 Scout Acute Senses Rifle, open feat 10 Scout Skill Training: Survival 11 Scout Keen Shot 12 Bounty Hunter Sneak Attack, open feat 13 Bounty Hunter (Familiar Foe ++) 14 Bounty Hunter Sneak Attack 15 Bounty Hunter (Familiar Foe ++), open feat 16 Bounty Hunter Sneak Attack 17 Bounty Hunter (Familiar Foe ++) 18 Bounty Hunter Sneak Attack, open feat 19 Bounty Hunter (Familiar Foe ++) 20 Bounty Hunter Sneak Attack Customization Notes: I left plenty of open feats to customize your character (eg pick up Vehicular combat, extra skill focus, etc.) The number of prechosen skills was intentionally low, so that you can fill it out with selections that match your character idea such as Pilot, Mechanics, etc so long as you have a reasonably good intelligence. Of course, you can just get by with 10 and nonhuman. Of course Twi'lek and Neimoidian both offer rerolls. Neimoidians were separatists which can be neat for roleplay. Basic tactics: Boom headshot. Pretty straightforward, this build is designed to get into the thick of things with Deceptive Shot and Sneak Attack +9d6, your average turn is going to consistent of pulling one of the most spectacular trick shots in history. Use Charging Fire as a standard action with Deceptive Shot to get around the battlefield while pulling off your signature headshots. As a bonus, if you wander through an enemies threatened radius as part of your charge, somersault on through with Acrobatic Strike to make sure you can land your attacks. Familiar Foe +4 can also make you darn close to one of the best duelists in the 'verse. You can also vanish with a quick deception + stealth check to start sniping. In case the thought of flipping out and killing people wasn't your idea of a good time. Your favorite allies: Nobles with Inspire Haste, Big bad bruisers with Pin, and Officers with Outmaneuver. Roleplaying: No you don't have the reputation of a crimelord or the resolve eroding powers of nobility. You just have the reputation of a man who brought done a rancor with Hold out blaster. People don't fear you because of your intimidating meanor, they fear you because they know if they blink you can put a blaster bolt between their eyes. Few have survived a shot from your pistol and lived to tell the tale. Plus, with SF deception (plus reroll if twi'lek/nemoidian) you can darn well make up whatever you like and people will probably believe you. |
| #7hobbitt_killerMay 01, 2008 13:38:16 | Very nice. Very, very nice. I like it a lot. Very customizable. I definitely have some thinking to do. Thank you very much for your help..and no, you did not come off as crabby. |
| #8delewobmesidMay 01, 2008 14:37:47 | small nit; acrobatic strike requires training in acrobatics (this from the soon to be tumbling Wookiee in armor) |
| #9gamorrean_hardcaseMay 01, 2008 23:51:40 | Right you are. I had it in the original write up, but it didn't make it on my rewriting it (too bad you can't copy and paste Excel sheets onto the forum). So there you are, minimum 10 int, 12 nonhuman. Non Optimized CL 6 Mal Reynolds Show Now, let's try Mal, CL 6 ST 13 DX 14 CN 14 IQ 11 WS 12 CH 12 Strong, Fast, Tough, Bright but not Smart, Willful, and Ruggedly Handsome. That's our Mal. Zoe: First rule of battle, little one. Don't ever let 'em know where you are. Mal: Whoo-hoo! I'm right here! I'm right here! You want some of me? Yeah, you do! Come on! Come on! Zoe: Of course, there are other schools of thought... 1 Soldier Martial Arts I, Heavy Weapons/Rifle/Pistol/Simple, Light/Medium Armor Skills (Knowledge: tactics, 3 open) 2 Scoundrel Fool's Luck, Point Blank Shot Soldier Precise Shot, One free Soldier Draw Fire (put a point in INT and get Persuasion) Soldier Martial Arts II Soldier Indomitable one free I've left lots of room for customization on Mal. Mal's good at a lot of things, but not the best in all. Mal can swing a pretty decent punch. He can use just about any weapon from his trusty sidearm to an antiaircraft gun, excepting them fancy swords. He's also got some rather uncanny luck, and more than his fair share of canny unluck. If there is one man that I'd call indomitable, it'd be Mal. After being tortured to death, he stood up took out his assailant and went after a crime lord. After the battle of serenity valley, Mal's turned into a tough no nonsense commander. Mal look's out for his crew (draw fire) but he's not quite talented enough yet to outmaneuver the opposition on the battlefield. In other words, he's a level or two shy of picking up the Officer prestige class, but he's already handling the job. He can also easily enter Gunslinger and Elite Trooper if you want to gear him more towards tearing things apart, or Crime Lord if he actually managed to make something of himself as a smuggler. Use the free feat slots and skills to focus him in a direction that best fits how you want him to evolve. |
