So I'm building an 8th level Rogue/Master Thrower to replace the current Rogue in my party for in game reasons. My current build includes a Blink Dog cohort that has been awesome as my flanking partner and I'm looking to have the same type of partner for my new character but I don't want to take leadership again. I'm currently thinking of paying the party caster to build me a golem or homunculus. All 3.5 books are allowed except Tome of Battle and we haven't been denied a Dragon or Dungeon Magazine article yet.

Persistent Blade is a 1st level spell from spell compendium that provides flanking bonuses. That keeps you from having to worry about pets, and I'm sure you can easily get the UMD to make the DC20 roll 95% of the time if you decide not to go with a caster/rogue build.

That's the cheapest flanker I can think of.

Unless you're in a solo campaign, the cheapest way is really to tumble around and flank with the group's fighter/tank...
