tl;dr portion down at the bottom!

Alright, one of my friends who is in our little playing group is for some reason obsessed with dragons. I'm serious. Almost every character he's made has had some kind of connection to dragons. He cant get away from it.

So we're starting up a new adventure in Freeport next Thursday, and so far we have me playing a Human Swordsage utilizing hidden daggers and walking around like a Monk (yay Know(Religion, History!)) and my other friend is playing both a Human Barb and Killoran (sp?) Druid with emphasis on healing. Then the dragon friend wants to play a Warlock.

So as a group we basically said we'd just put up with traps and locks however we can, and have stuck with this group setup. However my friend playing the Warlock is playing a Dragonwrought Kobold Warlock. I'm fine with this, but he's taking up another two feats to pick up Improved Dragon Wings so he can fly. We're starting at level six, so this is pretty much all he's getting unless he's like me and willing to take a couple drawbacks from UA, as our group plays with them.

I've told him he should just pick up the flying Invocation from Warlock instead, but he just wont listen. Does CO want to lay down opinion on this? I think he's just being goofy by eating up two feats to fly, when as a Warlock he can just pick it up. Especially until 12th level he cant even fly normally, only 1 round because his Con score is 10 after racial modifiers (which might change after I tell him this, since he wasnt aware during stat creation because we didnt have the book, and didnt know the specifics). He told me to build him a Dragonwrough Kobold Warlock with Imp Dragon Wings and four specific Invocations, without really knowing what he was getting into.

tldr; Three feats (two since he just HAS to have Dragonwrought) for flying, or use a Warlock invocation?!

the invocation > spending feats. but if he wants to waste feats, let him go

Take the invocation

Another option is convince him to do a dragonwrought loredrake kobold with the loredrake and the greater draconic rite of passage feats. There are plenty of spells that grant flight. Or you can use Precocious Apprentice and Warlock for Eldritch Theurge.

Jungle Kobold variant takes hit to int instead of con
Desert Kobold variant takes hit to wis instead of con

As Phoenix00's mentioned, there is the whole Loredrake and Precocious Apprentice thing.

If neither are allowed there is also just potentially:

Warlock 3 / Sorcerer 3 / Greater Rite of Draconic Passage / Eldritch Theurge 10 / X

The wings feat, interesting, yes. optimized, no. You can get an additional invocation with 1 feat, which could buy flight, so spending 2 feats on natural wings is a poor investment, unless you need to fly around in anti-magic fields for some reason....

If he's still dead set on it, I think he can afford a flaw or two, particularly if he has venerable dragonwrought mental stats. (Pathetic flaw?)

Unless Im missing it somewhere, I dont have any clue where this Loredrake thing is. I looked in Races of Dragon, Dragon Magic, and Complete Arcane. If I've got the book, or know one of our group does, I'd be happy to check it out, since I'm all for trying to semi-optimize this Warlock. Where is Loredrake?

I've talked to the DM and he agrees it's not an amazingly built character, but it's what our friend will want. We both agree he probably wont be willing to drop the natural wings and pick up Warlock wings, because he's crazy and will want to get as close to a dragon as he can. So if this little combo will get him natural wings, it's probably a decent avenue to look into.

I also like the build you gave right above, Nunkuruji. That looks like something I'd be willing to look at playing if I could ever actually get into arcane casters. However, I have no clue if our friend will be. We'll see.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've got a few more days to figure out my proposal. :P

EDIT:: Oh, and he's not allowed to be Venerable. Our DM says he doesnt like the idea of a 120 year old Kobold adventurer (especially with our friend's crazy backstory) only being level 6. Although, I'll try to talk him into flaws if he wont listen to anything else. I personally enjoy taking flaws, but no one else in our group (but the DM when he plays and I DM) is into taking flaws.

Loredrake's in Dragons of Eberron.

Ok, thanks. No, I dont believe any of us have any Eberron content to tell the truth, so that's probably out of the question.

So besides wanting to be a flying Kobold, what does this player actually want to do or accomplish by being a Warlock?

So far since we've been playing with him all his characters are built like this: I wanna be a dragon or tied to dragons, I want to be X (X being evil/good/chaotic and such), I want to wade into battle and not die because I'm awesome like a dragon. Which I dont think he'll be pulling off the last one with this Warlock.

Now from my understanding with this guy he wants to be an evil bastard man with some ties to dragons. So, for some reason he feels Warlock was a fitting class to play an evil bastard man, flavor-wise. I told him Warlock isnt exactly the best class to be running around the battlefield like he enjoys doing most of the time (he's used to playing Fighter, Cleric, and such that can semi-survive). When the DM shot down all his dragon-like races and dragon-like templates, the DM suggested Dragonwrought Kobold, and he just kind of went with it, even though he hates the idea of being small.

That's pretty much what I know. He told me to build it stat wise, use these three feats, four specific invocations, and I was to worry about the rest. He apparently doesnt care about the mechanics, just that he's as close to a dragon as he'll get. I'm kind of to the point that I'm just gonna build it like he wants, and see if he survives. Our DM has told me that it's gonna be a rough adventure and he expects (with the way some of us play) a death or two.

So it's hard not to suggest something without Sorcerer levels when Dragonwrought & Greater Draconic Rite of Passage are available. For someone who likes to get down and dirty there is the Battle Sorcerer alt class and the Stalwart Sorcerer alternative class feature. Not my favorites, but they could keep him alive at least. Combine it with a Reserve Feat from Complete Mage and he'd have a nuke to cast every round if desired.

Has Dragonfire Adept been considered? It's certainly dragon flavored, and is generally single stat dependent: Con... and that's also going to help keep him alive. Again, here's a place you'd want to go Jungle or Desert Kobold to avoid the con penalty. There really isn't anything more to say about it that hasn't been written in JanusJones' handbook.

I hadnt come into contact with Reserve feats until here recently and had forgotten about them. I dont know...with those I might be able to convince him of the Sorcerer path. The other regular player in a group has played Battle Sorcerer before, so I know the dragon lover doesnt mind it, because he's thought it was a neat variation. I might be able to convince him to do this instead.

My DM told me not to mention Dragonfire Adept to our dragon love. He didnt tell me why, but I wont argue with him for now. Maybe another session when our dragon lover is running out of ideas and reusing old ones.

Thanks for all the input!

Sounds like a real live Dragon Shaman. :D

What's that prestige class that turns you into a dragon?
