Font of Inspiration

So anybody mind explaining Font of Inspiration to me like I'm an eight year old?

All I know is

  • that you gain Inspirational points due to the number of times you take the feat
  • taking it 1 -2 is not recommended
  • taking it 5+ is cheezy
  • points are use to get Feats & Special abilities

I'm lost on how to use the points, what level I can gain the "new" feats, and how much certain feats cost.

(if you could tell me what book i can find the Font of Inspiration, that'd be great)

Font of Inspiration is designed for use with the Factotum character class (which appears in the Dungeonscape book).  The factotum has various abilties which are powered by inspiration points, as described in that book.  Font of Inspiration is not of any particular use without taking levels in factotum, unless someone else has created another class that uses inspiration points.

The feat itself is not printed in a book as far as I know.  It appeared in a web article that does not seem to be available on the WotC site anymore.  A copy of the article in question can still be found thanks to the Wayback Machine.

Just a note, for context: From nathedog's other thread, he's a first-time character builder aiming for a high-level fey'ri factotum (though I don't know why he picked that race nor class). I've already passed along the requisite warnings and caveats, plus some of the standard resources.

Tempest_Stormwind: I've been doing some heavy duty studing on D&D, my futrue character, and even though it has a LA, Iearned a lot to make it work. I've been hitting the books hard, seeing what others were doing with their build and how they were doing it, and taking heavy consideration to what you and Slagger have taught me, helped me make a fey'ri factotum work. Is there any why of decreasing the incruments of gaining new feats or am I stuck with the divisible by 3?

Slagger_the_Chuul: Can't I just learn Cunning Brilliance as a bouns feat? I know I'll end up getting it soon, but would it be worth it to get it at an earlier level?

Thank you both for all the help you both been giving me.

Well, it's not exactly "doesn't say I can't". It's more, "it says X - no more, no less." But yeah, it'd be effectively unlimited IP in combination with the out-of-combat encounter resource recharge ruling. (Unintentional alliteration for the win, I suppose.) It's a glaringly obvious oversight, and thus easy to correct, but I wanted to make sure.

It's not a problem for every factotum ability, since many of them have hard use limits no matter how many inspiration points you have, but it's definitely a problem with others (like cunning surge).

your first gave 1, your second gave an additional 1 for a total of 2, your third gives one for a total of three, and so on. I don't see the second interpretation used pretty much anywhere, but you should be aware of it nonetheless.
