The Morphing weapon property in Underdark lets you switch a weapon to any of the same type. The Master's Touch spell grants proficiency for a minute/level.

I'm thinking that combined, this is just hilarity.

That spear? It's a greatbow now! No, it's a greatsword! No, it's a Dwarven warpike! Or maybe I want an Elven courtblade? Or perhaps a spiked chain? Maybe a humble quarterstaff to go unnoticed? There's always a lance when you find yourself on horseback...

This really begs for a Changeling Chameleon character, but in a general sense, I was wondering what weapons people would recommend for such a combo. Unless I misread something, it opens up every weapon in the game, on demand.

I think you are reading it wrong:

Master's Touch let you consider yourself proficient with the weapon you just touched. Notice: the weapon you touched, not the bunch of metal/wood which it is composed of.

So if you cast Master's Touch and then touch a Morphing bastard sword, you are proficient with the bastard sword. If you later change the bastard sword to a spiked chain, you are still only proficient with the bastard sword.

If you take a level of fighter(or any class that gives martial weapon proficiency then take 1 level of Master of Masks prestige class (CS) and wear the gladiator mask (grants proficiency in all exotic weapons) you will proficient with every weapon in the game, even the ones you've never heard of.

I always thought this would be a really cool concept, but i couldn't think of any way to make a build using this trick powerful. yes changing weapons is cool, but unless you can come up with it to provide3 some sort of benefit, its probably not worth doing (and yes i know morphing gives you a lot of options, but the spiked chain already gives most of them, and in order to make this trick work, you really want there to be some sort of significant payback, as youve had to invest 1 level and a bunch of skill points for MOM)

Right. But if you morph it to a Spiked Chain and *then* cast Master's Touch, you can use that Spiked Chain...at least until you morph it to something else.

Exactly, but that can be quite an investiment in first level spells if you like to switch often... And generally spellcaster have better things to do than wield weapons... ;)

It's quite fun for my gish, though. I'm thinking it'll probably be a short list aside from the base form: Greatbow, Greatclub, Spiked Chain, etc

Note that taking EWP and dipping Warblade would let you swap your proficiency with 5 minutes of downtime. Not quite the same, but might be a more savory dip that MoM.

There's a section of the Weapon Group Feats description in UA/SRD that always rang true to me:

A game master who uses this variant can rule that any feat that requires a character to choose a specific weapon to apply the feat's benefit to (such as Improved Critical, Weapon Focus, or Weapon Specialization) can instead be applied to a weapon group. The character must still meet the prerequisites for the feat.

Though this variant seems to grant a large benefit to the character, it really doesn't significantly improve the character's power level. Since a typical character only wields one weapon at a time (or two, with a different weapon in each hand), the character doesn't really become any more powerful in a typical fight.

It does mean that a character is more likely to benefit when new magic weapons are found, since he's more likely to be skilled in their use. That can actually be beneficial to a campaign, in that it allows the game master to include a wider range of interesting treasures that the characters actually use (rather than simply sell or trade).

Such an argument would imply that it's difficult to really get any strong mechanical benefit out of being able to use any weapon, since really you're only using one at a time. The only chance I could see is if you pull something to get multiple Weapon Mastery-type feats to apply.

That said, such a trick does fit a Chameleon-style character very well, and could have lots of non-combat potential for fun

How about a Morphing Aptitude Weapon? Take EWP as a feat for any weapon that takes your fancy, then use it for proficiency with any exotic weapon you turn the morphing aptitude weapon into.

And I think there's a weapon enchantment somewhere that does just give proficiency.

Would the warblades ability to adjust all weapon-specific feats like WF or WS include the proficiency feat? Could you then Take EWP (X) and for an hour every morning have it apply to whatever weapon you decided to cart around with you?

I think I've been inspired.....

The proficiency enchantment is +2 and gives proficiency with "the weapon" it's on.
Give that weapon a morphic enchantment or enchant with the spell "Weapon shift" from SC (which unfortunately doesn't do ranged weapons) you can have every weapon in the game proficient. It's a little expensive of course.

Just take a level of Master of Masks for proficiency with ALL exotic weapons.

Now go nuts!
