I have been around the block playing, but I know some of you all can come up with some pretty ingenious ideas. Here is the guidelines. Setting: The new campaign will largely take place in and around the city of Freeport, an island seaport full of pirates, intrigue, and mayhem. Just the sort of place for new adventures and adventurers. Races: only those listed in the Player's Handbook -- dwarf, elf, halfling, gnome, half-elf, half-orc, halfling, or human. I want to highly discourage anyone from playing a true elf as it will be a disadvantage in this setting for several reasons. Orcs are present in this setting, so half-orcs are common, if not very well liked. Humans are most common, with a surprising number of halflings and gnomes. Dwarves are rare, but there a few of those hardy souls around town. Half-elves have much less of a stigma than full elves, and are generally viewed sympathetically. There a few tieflings around as well, if anyone is interested in playing one. Characters: roll 5 dice, keep the highest 3, reroll any ones, repeat for each ability. Death occurs at -20 HP instead of -10. Gestalt characters, so be careful how you assign your ability scores. Alignment: no lawful good PC's, just not appropriate for this setting. Classes: every gestalt PC must have as one of the classes swashbuckler, rogue, or soulknife. The other class is left up to the player, but I encourage it to be the race's favored class. Make sure the classes work well together (no paladin/necromancers) and give the PC a range of abilities. No doubling up on the same type of class (no fighter/barbarians, no sorceror/wizards). No double spellcasters with full spell progression (no cleric/wizards or favored soul/sorcerors). No spellthieves (too much DM headache). No multiclassing til 6th level. Prestige classes: can only take one prestige class at a time, must complete the prestige class before taking another one. Prestige class must be approved by the DM. Feats: no regional feats (so forget Big Game Hunter this time.) Skills: some ability to swim or sail will be useful, just saying. Allowed source books and material: Player's Handbook, Monster Manual, Dungeon Master's Guide, Complete Arcane, Complete Divine, Complete Mage, Complete Warrior, Unearthed Arcana, Spell Compendium, Expanded Psionic's Handbook, Players Handbook II, Cityscape, Dungeonscape. the book of nine sqwords. Other sources may be approved or used in the future, but for now these sources are the only ones available. Several of these sources have alternative class features for PC's, it would be interesting to see some of them used. So having put down the guidelines go at it. Now just to mention to my DM is pretty if its in the books go for it. Now I was trying to get a druid MOMF but the book is not allowed. He did say I can ask to use but I know that one is gonna be out. He also told me that its largely in the city and out to see so let the ingenious work begin. Oh yeah thanks ahead of time. |

If you keep sneak attack, you should take the penetrating strike alternate class feature (Dungeonscape) to trade trap sense for the ability to deal half sneak attack damage to creatures normally immune to sneak attack. If you use the Unearthed Arcana variant to trade sneak attack for fighter feats, you should use the spell sense alternate class feature (Complete Mage) to trade trap sense for an AC bonus against spells. |

So I would probably pick some good rogue prestige class, preferably giving full BAB, sneak attack, and perhaps some mobility options (dimension door or something) because druids rather lack those. I recommend keeping sneak attack, with animal companion you should have plenty of opportunities for flanking. |

I wouldn't worry so much about getting full BAB or tons of sneak attack, as if you dip SS2 and take Assassin's Stance, you'll already have enough SA to be dealing quite a lot of damage (+5d6). Also, full BAB doesn't matter much to a druid, as you'll probably be using natural attacks. Go with the unarmed SS variant, as you can then also make iterative unarmed strikes combined with your natural attack routine. This +SA will pretty much turn anything you can full attack into mulch in short order. After that... it really doesn't matter much. You're a druid, with sneak attack, and decent options from Swordsage like being able to teleport short distances, etc. You're going to WTFPWN everything in the face, and probably already be making your partymates look bad. Just go into Dread Pirate or something for the rest of that side. ![]() |
| #5jandor1Nov 09, 2010 8:54:36 | Phaedrus has a good point re: swordsage; however, since you can't multiclass till 6th, that's a bit off. I'd definitely take it on your rogue side as soon as possible, at least for those two levels, since you'll also get WIS to AC, which will work in wild shape ... etc. If you're rocking druid, and you want something simple: 1st: spell focus (conj) H: augment summon 3rd: imp init (going first is ALWAYS a good thing, at least in my experience) 6th: natural spell After that, it really depends on what you're trying to do. Full druid is a pretty good deal, especially since you can multiclass/prc on the rogue side. Druids have some fun water spells in SpC (iirc), too. And control weather (albeit much later in your career) should be hilarious ... If you have a PrC in mind (dread pirate could be fun if it fits your character concept), that will adjust feats accordingly. Since UA is in, flaws can help with that (the benefit almost always outweighs the trade off; pick up Vulnerable and maybe shaky or weak willed since you're gonna be melee/have a huge will save anyway). -J PS: other nice thing about druid|rogue is perfect saves. PPS: I second nixing trap sense for the ability to sneak attack monsters you can't otherwise. |
| #6bigtunaNov 24, 2010 4:47:33 | a few thoughts: There is always the druid/rogue combo. (if you can get complete Adventure approved) Go for daggerspells shaper (this will hurt your shapechange ability) + savage grapple (CAdr,feat) - turn into something big with as many attacks as possible (buff with bite of X spell)- grapple your foes - once you have establisted the grapple every grapple succes gives you nat. attack + sneak attack. Swordsage 2 is good for getting pre. req for daggerspell shaper and +2d6 sneak. |
