| #1kegdrainerMar 30, 2008 16:33:40 | I am working on a build for a Gestalt game, starting at 3rd level and we are required to take ninja all the way. Now, the rules are changed a bit. In this game, ninjas get Sneak attack instead of Sudden strike. Now, a Ninja/Druid is looking to be an all around winner but I was wondering if there is another combo I missed? We are using PHB, UA, the Complete series and no psionics. Races are limited to Human and elves (no half-elves). VOP is out of the question at the start of the game as BED/BVD are to be added in later. Most other books might be allowed upon DM approval. (So if its not on the listed books, I would need a page # for the DM to look it up) |
| #2andyjamesMar 30, 2008 18:37:00 | Definitely Ninja//Druid. Nothing says style like an invisible, sneak attacking panda (polar bear)... |
| #3darksamuariMar 30, 2008 18:55:45 | Just go with me here, a bard... You won't have to sneak your away into building through shadows but through the grand ol' timings of folk singin'! |
| #4tshernMar 30, 2008 19:01:17 | Why not multiclassing on the other side? Druid 20 and then combining things like Ranger, Ninja and Swordsage on the otherside should do. |
| #5aftercrescentMar 30, 2008 19:05:32 | Tshern, he has to take ninja straight through. ![]() |
| #6jameswilliamogleMar 30, 2008 19:06:25 | Binder/Ninja. Do everything, then eventually get a death attack ability = 40 :D edit: nm! need to learn how to read... |
| #7tshernMar 30, 2008 19:10:24 | Tshern, he has to take ninja straight through. What is wrong with me? For the last three or so weeks I have utterly failed to read/spot details like that. In that case Ninja will do just fine, but concentrating on the Druid side of the build is very, very smart. |
| #8aftercrescentMar 30, 2008 19:15:40 | agreed ![]() |
| #9feintmasterMar 30, 2008 22:46:43 | Savage Grapple [Wild], a feat from Complete Adventurer. Look it up... Giggle. Venomfire, a spell from Serpent Kingdoms. Look it up... Ask your self: "Should I combine the two?" |
| #10aftercrescentMar 30, 2008 23:06:10 | Rather, ask yourself: "Do I want to break the game and/or have my DM hit me with a book?" Venomfire is awesome and incredibly powerful. If you use it, he may use it back :P |
| #11lo77oMar 31, 2008 0:24:39 | I agree that druid is the number one when it comes to gestalting sneak's like ninja and rogue. But may i suggest cloistered cleric as an alternate. With a bit of DMM quicken or DMM persist you can get to be a rather nasty melee monster. And you can allways find a fun diety, or get yourself travel+trikery domain for added fun. |
| #12x-codesMar 31, 2008 0:33:58 | Aside from the awesomeness of playing a "Mystical Ninja," theres also the Avenging Executioner PrC. You get to add your full sudden strike damage to all shaken opponents (I don't believe it bypasses crit-immunity, though). The number of ways of making opponents shaken are innumerable. |
| #13kegdrainerMar 31, 2008 0:41:52 | Wow, tough choice when he makes it to 6th. (Natural Spell vs Savage Grapple)![]() As for Venomfire, I do not have that book, so I have no idea what it does. So far we have one working towards an Invisible Blade, a Wizard, a Cleric and the other is aiming for a Shadow Dancer (and doing the trap work). A few thoughts. Stats. 80 points to distribute amongst stats. The DM has an Elf race in his world thats +2 DX/CON -2 Int/Cha. +2 Listen, Spot, and Survival. so I was going with that one. 10/16/14/14/18/8 Max out K:nature, Concentration, Spellcraft, Survival, Spot, Listen, Hide and Move Silent. The hard part I am finding is what path to go for feats. I have already done a summoner type druid before so I was hoping to steer clear of that and go for something different. Flaws? Other than maybe Shaky/Vulnerable, I do not see any that might fit a ninja. So I am looking at 2-4 feats to play with. |
| #14x-codesMar 31, 2008 0:49:33 | Inattentive. Since you're working in darkness Spot does you little good either way, and with your Wisdom you can still win Listen vs. Move Silently checks anyway. |
| #15aftercrescentMar 31, 2008 1:05:02 | Lower Dex and raise Con. |
| #16kegdrainerMar 31, 2008 9:37:29 | Lower Dex and raise Con. I was debating that, but since I have two more levels to go before wild shape, wouldn't the higher dex be better at this stage? |
| #17lo77oMar 31, 2008 9:42:18 | I was debating that, but since I have two more levels to go before wild shape, wouldn't the higher dex be better at this stage? That is the same logic that makes kids pee in their pants when cold... It might be nice when you do it, and it might even warm you for a while, but later you will regret it.... I promise you. |
| #18mongoosefamiliarMar 31, 2008 10:17:14 | While I concede the hotness and humor of the invisible panda of doom, I might suggest an alternative: Swashbuckler/Ninja. Better BAB, plus Int to damage, plus being even more acrobatic than the regular ninja. |
| #19pontelonMar 31, 2008 10:28:24 | Fighter 1/Rogue X If you alternate your SA classes, you can get a SA dice every level. Otherwise, I would always suggest heading the Unseen Seer route and SA'ing touch spells(particularly the Orb spells from CArcane or Spell Compendium). Make sure to grab the reserve feat to allow you to touch-attack all day. Also pick up Invisibility/Blink when you get a chance. |
| #20Vitarri_WhitemaneMar 31, 2008 13:10:50 | Just a thought but how about ninja/beguiler. It gives you alot of good illusions and enchantments to seed confusion in your targets giving you ample cover to sneak in and get a few sudden strikes not to mention if you ever get captured aor caught plenty of ways of talking your way out of it. |
| #21totentanzMar 31, 2008 16:19:26 | I'm playing in a gestalt game with a Wild Shape Ranger 5/MomF 10//Ninja 15. It's been a great character choice. You don't lose the most important parts of ninja (AC, Sudden Strike, and Ki), and with Wilding Clasps (MiC) you can pump your AC into the unhittable range. Have you ever seen a Dragon go invisible and and then sudden strike with a full attack? It's scary. The only thing scarier is when the BBEG Frost Giant Totem Rager takes his full attack and doesn't hit once. |
| #22jaronkMar 31, 2008 17:02:43 | First, do you have to be the CA Ninja, or can you be any ninja class? Because there's other ninjas out there. The Swordsage is clearly a ninja class (just specialize in Shadow Hand manuevers). The Rokugan Ninja is also out there, along with the Ninja Spy PrC. And there's the Shadow Sun Ninja PrC as well. Something to consider. Anyway, here's some possible classes to go with CA Ninja 20. Master Thrower is well worth looking at. Unarmed Varient Swordsage would be really good for keeping that ninja theme. Ranger is kinda fun, giving you full BAB along with outdoorsy abilities. Shadowdancer could be amusing too. JaronK |
| #23kegdrainerMar 31, 2008 18:01:26 | Yep, I have to use the CA Ninja. As for Beguiler, PHB2 is not on the list of books. While I could go with it, the Druid is a winner (been playing them since 1st edition) Thank for the help. |
| #24x-codesApr 01, 2008 2:26:22 | Interesting idea, although probably not for you: Monk 6/Shou Disciple 5 (not necessarily in that order) Feats: Ascetic Stalker, Martial Stalker You now have unarmed strikes dealing 2d10 damage (4d8 with Improved Natural Attack) that overcome damage as lawful, adamanite weapons as well as Crushing Strike and Weapon Supremacy (might require a couple bonus feats). Shou Disciple is in Unapproachable East. Lets look at the whole build, although you'll likely only get bits and pieces in. Human Ninja 20//Monk 4/Swordsage 1/Shou Disciple 1/Monk +2/Shou +4/Fighter 4... 1 Monk) Improved Unarmed Strike, Stunning Fist 1 Human) Dodge 1) -open- 2 Monk) Combat Reflexes 3) -open- 5 Swordsage) Weapon Focus (Shadow Hand) 6) Martial Stalker 8 Monk) Ascetic Stalker 9 Shou) Weapon Specialization (Unarmed Strike) 9) Melee Weapon Mastery (Bludgeoning) 11 Shou) Mobility 12) Improved Natural Attack (Unarmed Strike) 13 Fighter) Greater Weapon Focus (Unarmed Strike) 14 Fighter) Greater Weapon Specialization (Unarmed Strike) 15) Robilar's Gambit 16 Fighter) Crushing Strike 18) Weapon Supremacy (Unarmed Strike) 4 levels left on the other side, and I'd like to get a couple more bonus feats so I can fit in Elusive Target and Snap Kick, not to mention Shadow Blade and Gloom Razor, but I have a couple open feats early on if I need to push up the Swordsage level. Anyway, assuming that's doable you'd wind up with an attack routine looking like this: BAB +18: Unarmed Attacks at (assuming hits, because your actual attack mod will be pretty awesome) +20/+21/+22/+23/+24/+20/+16/+12, each of which will deal 4d8+6+10d6 Sneak Attack (almost always applicable thanks to Island of Blades). That would be an average of 59 damage per hit, 472 damage per full attack, but not extremely practical, just something kinda neat you can do with Ninja in Gestalt. Take from it what you can. |
| #25kegdrainerApr 01, 2008 11:28:58 | Nice build there X-codes. Since we already have two going fighter/rogue (IB and Shadowdancer), I will go with the Ninja/Druid since that will allow me more flexibility. The hard part will be the feats. I would like to go with Track since I envision him as using the Ninja abilities to hunt down those that defile the forest. DM has no problem with flaws so thats two more feats to play with. Extend spell/Rapid Spell look good to allow more options later on. Any others? |
| #26aftercrescentApr 01, 2008 11:38:11 | Other than natural spell? You could pull spell focus conjuration/augment summoning and any summon enhancing feats. If you dip into a class that grants turning you can start getting divine metamagic. |
| #27kegdrainerApr 01, 2008 11:50:19 | I was hoping to do something other than a summoner Druid as I had done that type before. Taking a level in Cleric might be an option depending on the Deities/Domains the DM is offering. But that would also lower his Wild shape and thats a better option with the lower CHA. |
| #28lo77oApr 01, 2008 12:07:21 | Since you play with Sneak Attack instead of Sudden Strike, you should check out the feats in complete warrior that gives a few more options. Arterial Strike, and Hamstring. You could go the dodge/mobility/spring attack route, and stick to high dex cat forms. Sprint in 500 feet as a cheeta and spring attack. Bet they didnt expect that. But just give summoning another look, its not that bad to be able to summon flanking partners as a sneak attacking monster. |
| #29kegdrainerApr 01, 2008 12:16:05 | Good point there Lo77o. I had forgot about that aspect. |
