| #1RPGBGJan 14, 2015 6:04:48 | Hello. In a potential game over the horrizon I have been invited in a group with the following character creation rules: Free level adjustment up to +2. Feat every level (but no flaws allowed). 34 point buy. 6 levels in one base class / 2 gestalt levels in a second class.
I am pretty set on the first class being a Wielder modeled after Xander from Tempest's Dead for Nothing thread (link power+grip of iron for out of turn manifestation, mark of the dauntless to avoid the daze from psychic enervation, heavy telekinetic focus), but I have my doubts about my second class.
Psion (shaper) is one option, but I am unsure how power points, powers know and manifester levels interact under the gestalt rules. Also... with a feat every level - I will have plenty for expanded knowledge, so I can add astral construct summoning to my repertoire without any problems.
Factotum is another option, but cunning surge is 6 levels away and problably outside of the campaign's level range.
Hexblade can also surprisingly work well. The character will stay away from melee, but full BAB is still nice for telekinetic maneuvers. Cuse and dark companion are also useful (mostly the second, not enough curse uses to matter). The spellcasting won't be of much use... some utility I guess. Arcane resistance, good fortitude and d10 is of course nice.
For a race... drow seems very attractive.

p.s: Also I keep spelling Wilder incorrectly. Don't mind me. Rouge syndrom I guess. |

Tiny size and a +10 bonus to dexterity will help you avoid being hit, and the +4 bonus to constitution will help when you are hit. The natural fly speed will save you a power known and a few power points each day. Since you're relying on psionics, the -8 penalty to strength and complete lack of natural reach aren't a problem.
I'd be inclined to use paladin as the secondary class. You get just enough levels to get charisma to saves. That's good for a charisma-dependent class like wilder, especially if you're getting that +8 from petal. I'd go with paladin of freedom, because lawful good doesn't turn my crank. It's especially relevant if you go with petal though, because fey are strongly associated with chaotic alignments.
This next one is a bit cheesy, but it doesn't hurt to ask the DM. Greater bestow curse can be used to strip the subject of a class feature of the caster's choosing (Dragon 348, p36). Pay someone to cast that on you to get rid of your psychic enervation class feature. Not only will you never be dazed from using wild surge, you'll never lose power points either. |

Either one of the Paladin Variants or even consider Crusader or Hexblade (Even Warlock with the right Invocations). The Warlock option could be exceptionally good in that it would provide some nice passive abilities and synergize. Two things to keep in mind with Gestalt, gain whatever you can (look for synergy), and Gestalt doesn't (by default) provide you extra actions, so build like you want to be really good at one thing, and the other thing is just there because it makes you bettter without costing you actions. |
| #5RPGBGJan 15, 2015 2:54:36 | Thanks for the suggestions. I can really see myself playing a petal although the bonuses are good... too much comical relief type of a character for my taste. As for the charisma sinergy - I agree for the suggestion that this is something I should look for. I am leaning more towards hexblade than paladin. Its bonus to saves is worse though it is just about the same for large percentage of the effects, but curse and dark companion offer very nice synergy with the telekinetic maneuvers.
In that chain of thoughts - if I use the unofficial hexblade revision this will give me more curses and a good fortitude save which is nice, but also will turn the curse into a swift action. Would that interfere with linked power? Can you use an immediate action outside of your turn and a swift action during your turn or you cant to both during the same round? I am a bit unclear in this regard.
For now I am leaning towards the following:
Drow Wilder 4 / Wilder 5-11 I Hexblade 1-7 Str: 8, Dex 14, Con 12, Int 14, Wis 12, Cha 22 (enhancement bonuses from items to Cha and Con) Feats: Least Dragonmark, Mark of the Dauntless, Psicrystal Affinity, Linked Power, Psicrystal Containment, Expanded Knowledge (Grip of Iron), Expanded Knowledge (Telekinetic Thrust), Expanded Knowledge (Astral Construct), Expanded Knowledge (Schism), Boost Construct, Ability Focus (Hexblade Curse), Spell Penetraion, Improved Initiative, Metapower (Linked Power, Grips of Iron). Powers: Inertial Armor, Defensive Precognition, Energy Stun, Grip of Iron, Object Reading, Telekinetic Thrust, Telekinetic Maneuver, Astral Construct, Schism, Psionic Plane Shift Alternative Class Features: Dark Companion, Educated Wilder.
The Bestow Curse trick is certainly pure win (never thought of that), but it is also beyond my cheese treshold.
Under the psionic transparency rules will Spell Penetration (bonus hexblade feat) help my powers?
So, to summarise my questions: 1. Does Spell Penetration work for psionic powers? 2. What about Leech Power and spells? 3. Can I use immediate action before my turn (Grip of Iron) and swift action during my turn (Hexblade Curse) at the same time?
Bonus question: Is this subforum the right spot for this thread or it should go in the Previous Edition General? |
| #6Andarious-RosethornJan 15, 2015 5:11:03 | 3: If you use your Swift Action first then your Immediate action draws (as usual) from the next round (meaning no swift that round).
Bonus: You're in the right forum.
Not really certain right now about the first two answers. |
| #7RPGBGJan 15, 2015 6:04:13 | Ah, so the immediate action is like taking your swift in advance. In short my rotation can be something like this.
My turn: |
| #8Slagger_the_ChuulJan 15, 2015 8:04:53 | Although using the default magic/psionics transparency allows the direct effects of spells and powers to interact (and for power resistance and spell resistance to block them both), the individual skills and feats are separate and apply to just their own side of things. So a feat like Spell Penetration only improves the ability of spells to overcome spell resistance, and skills like Psicraft allow for the identification of psionic effects, but not magical ones. |
| #9Andarious-RosethornJan 15, 2015 10:46:54 | Yes this is what I meant, and Slagger seems to have nailed the rest. |
