Get a character into space!

I read somewhere that you have to move seven miles a second to beat the earths gravitational pull and enter space, I am just wondering if anyone could come up with a character that could move that fast and fly into space...

Use any 3.5 book.

Using just fly speed / run speed and jumping.. No teleports.

I think in DnD you can just fly upwards.

Alternatively, Teleport.

Maybe a Jumplomancer could do it.

Actually, I think may really be able to just fly upwards.... At least as a dragon, I believe that might work.

need resistance to a vacuum, too.

Warforged Dragonfire Adept.

Flight, elemental resistance, doesn't need to breathe.

Alternatively: distant shot, fling ally.

Or: be a psion mindswitched into an airship.

need resistance to a vacuum, too.

Again, not sure if the DnD space thing operates the same as our space.

If it did, you'd face searing heat in sunlight and be bathed in deadly radiation, for which there is no energy resistance.

Meh, radiation is just a fort save.

That being said, dragons do fly according to rules of physics, they just have effectively infinite endurance due to having a portal to an elemental plane within them, IIRdraconomiconC.

It is actually likely that DnD suns radiate Fire and Positive Energy.

perfect flight + Body of Iron or somesuch enables spaceflight right nice.

Just one fort save... every 6 seconds.

Just one fort save... every 6 seconds.

Sufficient base save + Aura of Perfect Order. :P

Steadfast determination lets you not automanically fail a fort save if you roll a 1

Yeah, I just looked at it yesterday. It's really quite nice.

The rules of physics and orbiting might not work in D&D, but this is what is happening.

You can certainly get into space by flying upwards. There's nothing stopping you. However, your relative velocity is taken from the planet below you, effectively moving you at 1000 mph as the world turns.

The 7 miles per second is a goal. What it means is that to set up an orbit and NOT fall back to the planet, you have to be moving that fast at x altitude.

In reality, this number varies by distance from the planet. 7 mps is probably the minimum height you can pull off this trick in a vaccum. The further out you go, the slower you can go (the moon isn't moving at 7 miles a second around us).

Effectively, it means that you would constantly be having to 'hover' to maintain your position. If you stop flying, the planet pulls you back in. You'd have to go out a very long ways...maybe to the moon?...to avoid being drawn back in. Or perhaps to the point where earth and moon gravity cancel out...I forget the name of the point.

=======================

This kind of physics is also why "I shrink the boulder, throw it at the bad guy, and dispel it in midair!" doesn't work.

Objects have KE = 1/2 mv^2. If you throw a 1 lb ball at something at 100 mph, and Dispel it into a 1000 lb boulder, you haven't changed KE at all...you've dispersed it over the boulder. Your boulder will suddenly be moving at 10 mph, and very abruptly fall to the ground short of the target.

Mind you, it will work if you just drop it on something. Gravity is nice in retaining excess velocity, but by physics what would happen is the ball would suddenly slow down as it got big...and then resume accelerating.

Ask your physics instructor. Should be fun to get an answer. gotta love magic.

Also note that Spelljamming exists in 3.5, it just isn't dwelt upon. So Spelljamming space rules still apply, unless otherwise noted.

I noted that they were very careful not to replicate the spells that create the major and minor helms. Who needs airships when you have those spells?

You could go ethereal. You can move upward (as per ethereal movement), still keeping your eye on the material (since the material is "fuzzy"), then when you're up in space cancel the etherealness.

Trying to setup a nuclear orbital canon? We can do that too :D!

Why don't you just build an airtight room with the constant flow of air thingy circling the room with the top flying ability added to it from the stronghold builders guidebook? Depending on what material you use to make the room out of, can be very cheap, and easily gets out of the planets gravitanional pull, because its magical flying.

Undeath like Necropolitanhood goes a long way toward surviving in a vacuum.

Maybe being a deathless would be better. Depends how much positive energy stars emit.

also space is a temperature of 4 calvin... that might mean you need a little cold resistance.... also take up some hydrogen with and you get solid hydrogen. that must be good for something...

and ummm... quote from wikipedia the source of all knowledge:
Humans and animals exposed to vacuum will lose consciousness after a few seconds and die of hypoxia within minutes. Blood and other body fluids do boil when their pressure drops below 6.3 kPa, the vapor pressure of water at body temperature.[5] This condition is called ebullism. The steam may bloat the body to twice its normal size and slow circulation, but tissues are elastic and porous enough to prevent rupture. Ebullism is slowed by the pressure containment of blood vessels, so some blood remains liquid.
sooo you might need a space suit or something...

Caveat: If hydrogen exists. After all, Water is an element, from, y'know, the elemental plane of water.

No you don't. You just need to be Not Human. Iron Body is my favourite for non-arcanes, for arcanes I believe there are environmental adaptation spells which should take care of that.

Also, if you use that source, technically vermin, magical beasts, aberrations, outsiders etc. DON'T suffer those effects :P

Mm... space-faring dragons....

Every time someone discusses real world physics in D&D, God kills a catgirl.

well there is only one question left to answer. how can you optimize a space fairing whatever (dragon outsider ect.)
