| #1dbayMar 28, 2010 0:38:19 | The situation: you're low on hit points, out of spells, disarmed, surrounded, and/or totally screwed. Your allies are dead, unconscious, dying, and/or also totally screwed. You estimate you have one, maybe two rounds to save the situation, but thankfully you have a plan for this. You do have a plan, don't you? For me, it's either A) a Quaal's Tree Token. If an instantly appearing tree can't save you, you're not playing the same game I am. Unfortunately, it costs 450 gp for every use. or B) using Shrink Item to shrink a swimming pool into a Cape. Throw it on the ground, hilarity ensues. What's yours? Bonus points if: -It can be done at low level -It is inexpensive -Reusable -Avaliable to non-casters -it's not just a contingent teleport. |

| #3ashernMar 28, 2010 9:17:23 | Skrink Item to pull out a ten x ten x ten block of stone. Plugs all convenient hallways/corridors, and still won't bankrupt your carrying capacity! (5x5x5 also work well for tunnels) It has enough HP and hardness that it will take any low level enemy besides an earth elemental dozens of rounds to get through. It's the next best thing to create stone wall. And it's free, and will last for weeks when cast ahead of time. |
| #4liveshiptraderMar 28, 2010 10:15:09 | Anti-magic dust from Lords of madness not a universal get out of jail card but its game breaking caster crushing when used. |
| #5dbayMar 28, 2010 13:12:45 | Another favourite is escaping into a bag of holding, handy haversack (if you're a halfling, I think you can fit), etc. and having your familiar pull you out I like the sound of that shrunk block of stone, though. clever. |
| #6thaosyr23Mar 28, 2010 20:41:28 | smoking vial + hide silent image (cantrip if you're a gnome ill) of wraiths/ other nasty things that people dont want to mess with. yelling "bees!" |
| #7phaedrusxyMar 28, 2010 21:26:07 | Obscuring Mist + Rope Trick = disappearing act |
| #8ashernMar 29, 2010 9:38:01 | Oh, also! Eggshell Dust grenades, and tanglefoot bags! No save blindness+ immobilization? So spells required? Hell yes! |
| #9suin_bahhar_02Mar 29, 2010 13:59:17 | A flint and stone and some torches or some lamp oil continue to be the most used items when adventureers are in doubt and in a tight spot. Burn baby! Burn! Lots of usefull ways to create (debilitating) smoke really. Pyrotechnics, smokesticks, obscuring mist, silent image are but a few. Setting fire to a wizards laboratory, alchemical workbench or smithies incendiaries is bound to make smoke that could convincingly sicken or nauseate airbreathing creatures, so always take advantage of your surroundings. |
| #10death_isthe_beginingMar 29, 2010 20:11:55 | I always have a backup plan, sometimes the plan is just run faster and hide(monks are faster then everyone else and they get hide and move silently) but I always have a fail-safe. With a Warlock I like the Darkness invocation and the Instinctive Darkness feat from Drow of the Underdark(a melee type is within 10ft of me?I cast Darkness, I don't care if it's his turn I can cast it as an immediate action). I suppose a Well of Many Worlds would be a good last ditch effort(especially if it is currently connected to somewhere with the minor positive dominant trait, ideally Ysgard). |
| #11junataMar 29, 2010 21:46:27 | Depending on your DM, ventriloquism + "Hastur Hastur Hastur" solves most problems Bluff is my all-purpose get out of/into any situation skill. Sadly only works on intelligent things. Bonus points if you can get the enemies to stop hurting you and start helping you. If this is happening in a standard dungeon, Dwarf + Dimension Door lets you precisely teleport to the surface. Belt of Dwarven kind should also work. |
| #12steelblueMar 31, 2010 1:22:14 | At low levels? Chalk or flour. Marbles and shoe soles or spikes designed to avoid slipping on marbles. Rope. There's no intelligent being that won't look closely at your hand reaching for your "gold" in a belt pouch, and it's basically a free obscuring cloud. Seriously, the other guy in my group who DMs has gotten to the point where he rerolls "bandit" results on our random encounter table if I'm in the party, character regardless. And last game he flat refused to permit urban encounters because I was running a wizard and had silent image, and he was tired of his bad guys having this conversation: "But I saw them/him/it turn here!" "Idiot, it's a dead end!" There are ways around these tricks, of course, but it's hard to argue that a random bandit is going to have tremorsense and a stack of skill points in balance, or knowledge: local. At high levels? Eh, sorry... it's usually a contingent teleport. ![]() |
| #13empirateApr 01, 2010 9:21:43 | I like Dust of Dryness. Most hilariously, lots of it (but it's costly at 850 gp a pop). Then suck up a pond or lake or something. Every time you're in a bad way in close quarters, flush the enemy away with 100 gallons of instant water. Out in the open, just use more of the littel pellets. Another all-time favorite is the Glibness spell (or a Potion thereof): "Congratulations, Sir, your cunning plan, in which you planted me as a double-agent among those bad, bad adventurers, then wiped your own memory so you couldn't reveal me even under extreme circumstances, succeeded brilliantly! Now where is my reward for all the dangerous work?", or "You freed me of the enchantment binding my will to theirs! Thank you ever so much, my father the king will reward you handsomely!", or even "These are not the adventurers you are looking for!" As a caster, I like my good old trusty Dimension Door, which I always keep prepared for just such an occasion. Xorn Movement is fun, too. |
| #14suin_bahhar_02Apr 01, 2010 11:27:46 | Potions of invisibility are cheap and reliable escapes too. |
| #15the.ladleApr 08, 2010 16:17:50 | ... I like throwing down a daern's instant fortress. or even more fun! Quaal's feather token tree! or anchors can be fun. throw it, call it out, and Woah! anchors flying through the air! |
| #16jaxtorApr 09, 2010 12:31:49 | Decanter of endless water. 20 foot long 1 foot wide stream of water shooter 30 gallons of water a round Add bless water spell for fun on vamps and evilness. |
| #17hellehundtApr 12, 2010 19:21:27 | Collumn of Ice from frostburn bam permanent 10 foot radius collumn of ice if you can catch them off guard then they're stuck against the ceiling too also a favorite is get your pet polymorphed into something big with swallow whole, get eaten then have it bum rush through everything as you heal it and yourself from the inside |
