| #1epixtomeJan 27, 2012 7:42:17 | Hello everyone! It seems like the board went through some pruning eh? I hope this didn't disrupt the boards too much for the community ![]() Ok well, right to business? I'm working on building a character idea and would like some opinions. This is the idea: A bruce lee style martial artist, quick, precise, doesn't waste more energy than needed, athletic. I'd like to combine a form of mental strength too since he was not just about the fighting. (I'm working with 3.5e, no homebrew, level 20 build but I'll start playing at 10) A githzerai monk. Reading the wikipedia article which references D&D almost entirely, there are some that seem to be fitting. With higher DEX and WIS and 2 PP they seem to be headed in the ideas direction. The Build so far Male Githzerai Monk 10, Lawful Neutral, STR13 DEX20, CON11, INT7, Wisdom20, Charisma13, HP43, speed 70, AC 22, unarmed/shuriken, feats improved disarm, combat reflexes, dodge, mobility, sprint attack, improved unarmed strike, stunning fist, weapon focus, TRAITS: quick, listen/spot/tumble. Description between the idea and the build This will allow me to spring into combat and out. The idea of moving quickly especially with monk and quick trait. Stunning, furry and disarm are very martial arts-like as well. There are two feats which allow me to increase my AC against a target but I can't quite remember what they are. (found them) One is Combat Expertise and the other dodge/mobility. It's the dodge bonus applied in full against people making an AoO when I spring attack. So this would be like Bruce Lee fighting multiple tartgets and dodging attacks while tumbling for his target. The only other feat I'm missing was the one that allowed me to make an AoO against someone making an AoO against me. Almost like a "couter", often seem in martial arts. The opinion So what do you guys think, am I headed in the right direction? PS. I was thinking of adding a small amount of psionics and fighter. |

You're level 12, not level 10. You should consider Weapon Finesse rather than Weapon Focus if you really want to hit: Weapon Focus gives you +1 to hit, Weapon Finesse gives +4 with those ability scores. However, the rest of your feat selection is generally poor (Spring Attack does NOT synergize well with monks), and your low Constitution will come back to bite you as a frontliner. Furthermore, the monk itself is an awful class, and you'll be noticing this by trying to focus on spring attack. Are you limited to core-only books? If so, this character concept can be built, but it will perform quite poorly and be somewhat disappointing (you will not be Bruce Lee, you will be an impersonator). If you want to replicate this particular fighting style, the easiest way to do it by far is the Swordsage in the Tome of Battle, which is exactly what you are looking for. Focus on Diamond Mind (mind over body, action without thinking, concentration and instant analysis) and Setting Sun (precision, leverage, throwing, countering). |

However, the Swordsage is awesome. One small but neat little thing I like is that if you must take Dodge (because you're set on Spring Attack, say) you can take Desert Wind Dodge instead, which might actually be useful (Dodge is only really good in one-on-ones). From a Psionic point of view, an interesting combo is Psychic Renewal + Psychic Meditation. You use your standard action for a maneouvre, your swift action to recover it (using PR, spending your Psionic Focus) then your move to recover your Psionic Focus (using PM), allowing you to do it all over again next round. I've yet to try this (or read anything on it) - I imagine it would suck (two feats, standard action each turn only), but could work in a gimmick build which relied on using a single manouevre (or a couple) often, since even Adaptive Style takes a full-round action (and costs a feat anyway) which is not useful if you want to chain the same manouevre(s) over in rapid succession. Note that as a Psionic race, you don't necessarily need to take levels of a Psionic class. You can still get Psionic feats, and enter classes like the War Mind (if you can get the Knowledge). For your theme, Elocator is a very flavourful core class which might work well, though you'd need at least to dip Psion or Psychic Warrior or something. |
