Sep 11, 2008 22:50:09 I'm kinda new to the whole optimization thing. Closest I've had to an optimized character has been a Psion with some fire boosting feats and a summon-focused Druid. I typically play weird gimmick characters but I'd like to be semi-effective with this next one but I don't want to compromise the idea itself.

The character concept is simple, a Gnome Paladin. I'm open to a Paladin variant, in fact I want to use the Enforcer variant from Dragon 310 so I can just be Lawful Neutral. As long as I have at least one level in that and focus on melee combat, I could really care less where the build ends up though I'm interesting in trying mounted combat as a small character. The DM allows just about anything that is in a book or in Dragon magazine except for the Spell Point variant and Psionics (not that those are relevant). That being said, I'd like to avoid Multi-classing restrictions if possible.

Edit: And if you're wondering about the '06 join date but being new to CO, I took a look at the Druid Handbook a while back and had some questions.

Sep 11, 2008 22:59:30 Ummm, are you looking for 3.5 edition help or 4th edition help? 4th is pretty easy, you just make sure your strength/charisma is very high and then put some points into your wisdom.

3.5 Most definitely. Not too many people are willing to play, much less run, a 4th edition campaign around here. Besides, aren't' Gnomes no longer a playable race? I haven't bothered looking up much about 4th since no one will play it yet.

Sep 12, 2008 1:43:44 It's either Champions of Valor or the Web Excerpt that had paladin racial sub levels for gnome that are particularly good. It grants hide and move silently as skills, gains hide in plain sight, favored enemy and invisibilty 1/day.

You may also look into bard + devoted performer, but if you go with the racial sub levels you can't take initiate of milil. =/ Just take a peek though in case you're curious.

Sep 12, 2008 13:19:35 I appreciate the help, but dipping into Bard requires a non-lawful alignment which defeats the purpose trying to make it a Gnome Paladin in the first place (though technically I suppose this is really a Gnome Enforcer). That racial substitution sounds interesting, though. I couldn't find it on Crystal Keep (the Gnome Paladin there just gets Perform (Comedy) so would you mind linking me to it?

From the looks of things, I might end up just using the Enforcer as a jumping off point now. I'm looking at a few things and I think I could just take the first two levels of Enforcer, go into Samurai for the Bastard Sword proficiency and Two-Weapon Fighting equivalent, then Fighter for a pair of bonus feats. Sorry I forgot to mention this before, but this is also based on a 30 points stat buy. Here's what I'm looking at so far.

Str 14 (16 - 2)
Dex 10
Con 20 (18 + 2)
Int 8
Wis 10
Cha 8

Level 1: Enforcer - Monkey Grip
Level 2: Enforcer
Level 3: Samurai - Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Bastard Sword), Weapon Focus (Bastard Sword)
Level 4: Samurai - Two-Weapon Fighting (Two Swords as One)
Level 5: Fighter - Oversized Two-Weapon Fighting
Level 6: Fighter - Power Attack, Cleave
Level 7+: ????

This lands me with a 6 BAB at level 6, a 14 Fort Save (which I find hilarious), multiple attacks with a decent chance to hit, and I still have another level to burn since I just found out I'm starting at level 7. That also means I have a 19000 GP budget I have no clue what to do with.

My favorite PrC is the Fist of Raziel from BoED. Combine him with the "charging smite' feature from PHB2, the 'valorous' enchantment (I think PGtF) and you'll do a lot of damage.

as you are a Gnome, take a look at the 'Initiate of Baravar Cloakshadow (CoV)': Great spells are added to your list.
