Ok after lots of help from people on this forum I think I have come up with a decent build.

Although it is not comparable to the Supermount build, thats fine with me, my campainge is not optimized and Paladin levels were out of the question.

All I want from this build is to have a decent animal companion/mount able to preform ok in combat along with a mix of ranged and melee mounted abilities for my character.

So here is what I came up with

1 Ranger 1 Skill Focus (Handel Animal), Power Attack (feat granted from Flaw - Meager Fortitude)
2 Ranger 2 Rapid Shot
3 Ranger 3 Mounted Combat
4 Ranger 4
5 Ranger 5
6 Ranger 5 / Beastmaster 1 Natural Bond
7 Ranger 5 / Beastmaster 1 Wild Plains Outrider 1
8 Ranger 5 / Beastmaster 1 Wild Plains Outrider 2
9 Ranger 5 / Beastmaster 1 Wild Plains Outrider 3 Mounted Archery
10 Ranger 6 / Beastmaster 1 Wild Plains Outrider 3 Manyshot
11 Ranger 6 / Beastmaster 1 Wild Plains Outrider 3 / Halfling Outrider 1

I am thinking from this point on I will finish out to level 20 with Halfling Outrider, i'm not sure what other feats I should pickup along the way, perhaps some more mounted feats?

Let me know what you all think?

Anyone got any advice or input on this build? My game starts this saturday. I know this build is not completely optimal but I am hoping its not a steaming pile either.

Do you guys think this is a decent build?

It's not all that amazing, but at least Fluffy won't die to stray arrows. It fits your goals passably. Just be certain to equip your mount as well as yourself (they have slots for magic items too).

Weaponwise, I'd suggest an energy bow, ideally modified with elvencraft (from Races of the Wild; elvencraft longbows also count in all ways as quarterstaves. They're enhanced as staves or as bows separately.) This gives you a ranged Power Attack as well as an answer to several usual problems with ranged characters (ammunition, DR, concealment...) without having to sacrifice time to switch weapons when you enter melee or Strength synergy. It's better at range than in melee, but most of your feats are based around ranged combat anyway (they have to be, given your prereqs). All you really need for melee is Power Attack anyway - Str 14 is sufficient, put the rest into Dexterity.

In terms of other equipment, the MIC has a lot of surprisingly good mount gear - the Battle Bridle (your mount wears this, and you get +5 Ride and either Mounted Combat or Ride-By Attack) comes to mind.

Ok some great advice, expecially the Battle Bridle, I was eventually planning on spending a feat on Ride-By Attack but with this item I wont have to (I will already have Mounted Combat as a prereqs).

One question about the Energy Bow. I though I was limited to shortbows for mounted combat? I was sure I read this in the PHB?
