Since you guys are the best here on the CO board...need advice

Yes I know this is a weird combination for a dragon to be taking but here is my most recent build for my Gold Dragon character Lynxanadrachtriss (we call her Lynx for short) We are NOT allowed any of the ‘variants’ from the books, only basic classes. No Exalted Deeds or Vile Darkness…trying to keep the builds as simple as possible.

Any ideas of how I could improve this character?

The total ECL is 20

She took 11 levels of dragon (she is a very young Gold) and has taken 4 level of Monk. She took Improved Grapple and Combat Reflexes for the bonus feats.

Stats:

(Sorry if it is so involved, just wanted to cover all my bases)

STR 42 (18 build, Gold Dragons have a natural +10, +5 for a Tome of STR, +6 from Belt of Giant’s STR, the 3 builder points went into STR)
DEX 18 (12 build, +6 from Gloves of Dex)
CON 20 (14 build, Gold Dragons have a natural +6)
INT 14 (8 build, Gold Dragons have a natural +6)
WIS 20 (14 build, Gold Dragons have a natural +6)
CHA 14 (8 build, Gold Dragons have a natural +6)

Equipment is:

Gloves of Dex +6
Belt of Giant’s STR +6
Bracers of Armor +8
Ring of Protection +5
Ring of Elemental Resistance (greater) Cold
Amulet of Mighty Fists +5
Pectoral of Improved Flight – 2 steps
Gem of Fortification 100%
Used Tome of STR +5
Cloak of Resistance +5

Feats are:

Improved Natural Attack (bite, tail slap)
Multiattack
Improved Multiattack
Rapid Strike
Improved Rapid Strike
Improved Unarmed Strike (The DM is going to allow my claws to grow as if one step larger)
Improved Grapple
Combat Reflexes

So far how I am thinking this will all work is:

The monk flurry of blows - allows me to use one extra claw attack per round if I go full attack (DM is helping me to understand monks a bit better)
Rapid Strike - will allow me one extra attack with any one of my natural attacks, my choice each round.
Improved Rapid Strike - I would get one extra attack with ALL of my natural attacks, just the bonus attacks would be at a -5. (Is this right? Or would ALL the attacks be at a -5???)

So all together I could have:

2 bites (one rapid), 4 claws (one rapid, one from flurry), 3 wings (one rapid), and 2 tail slaps (one rapid)…am I correct? Or am I not figuring something?

See, usually I play wizards and wanted to try a melee character instead, so I am trying my best to understand how this all works. Waaaay different from only having one action every round to cast a spell

Any help would be greatly apperciated : )

Ummm, actually, monk unarmed strikes are in ADDITION to your full attack routine. That's the reason that monk should NEVER be added to highly advanced creatures.

Seriously...

Your attack routine is something like
AB-2, AB-2, AB-7, AB-12, AB-17, etc out to whatever your BAB is from your dragon HD and your monk levels each doing monk unarmed damage for a 4th level monk of your size

THEN

2 bites, 4 claws, 4 wing buffets, and 2 tail slaps at your max AB-7 (EACH natural weapon gains an extra attack from Imp Rapidstrike, so 1 claw becomes 2, and 2 claws becomes 4, 2 hits with each)

Depending on your BAB, you'd have about 17 attacks in a round, all with really good chances to hit.

PS, if you are an old enough dragon to gain sorcerous casting, get the spell Blood Wind (wiz/sorc1, SpC), which gives your natural attacks a range incriment of 20 to a max of 5 range incriments (100 ft range!).

Don't forget Wraithstrike and Scintillating Scales ;)

You can always take natural attacks as secondary attacks to your iteratives, provided your natural weapons aren't busy using whatever weapon you are making your itteratives at. You just take a -5 penalty normally, or a -2 with Multiattack, or a -0 with Improved Multiattack.

So...like a lizardman with a longsword and a +6 BAB can make

1 longsword primary
1 longsword secondary
1 claw with hand no holding longsword
1 bite

longsword would be at +6/+1
claw and bite would be at +4, since most lizardmen have multiattack.

EDIT:
Don't forget Wraithstrike and Scintillating Scales ;)

NO! NO! BOWEN....BAD BOWEN *smack* WHAT DID I TELL YOU ABOUT GIVING DRAGONS WRAITHSTRIKE!!!

3 exclamation marks and caps makes this serious business

Ok so:

I would have the flurry of blows and the bite/wings/tail slaps as well, as the claws would be doing the flurry?

Good lord, this dragon got way nastier that I imagined!

Will have to have a cohort who can cast spells :D Neat idea with the wraithstrike

No no no no no....you don't have to flurry with your claws....nothing says you have to flurry with your claws. The PHB says that a monks WHOLE BODY is a weapon, and they can make unarmed strikes with ANY part of it. These attacks do the same damage regardless. A human monk can make unarmed strikes with HIS EARS if he wishes, and they would do the same damage as his fists.

THEREFORE

Your dragon can make unarmed strikes with any part of its body that isn't mouth/wings/claws/tail such as with headbutts or neck sweeps or belly slams and still make natural attacks with ALL of its natural weapons.

And dude, don't forget, gold dragons DO cast spells, depending on age catagory, check it out. Wraithstrike is personal, so even if you have a caster friend, he/she can't cast Wraithstrike on you.

Not only do you not HAVE to flurry with your claws, you CAN'T.

"When using flurry of blows, a monk may attack only with unarmed strikes or with special monk weapons (kama, nunchaku, quarterstaff, sai, shuriken, and siangham)."

Although any sane DM will probably make you give up your claw attacks in order to use an Unarmed Strike and say they are punches from your kung fu dragon. Although you are ECL 20 so I could see it going either way. Check with your DM to be sure.

That's why I was leaving them out...to say that I was 'hitting' them with my balled up claws when I flurry...

Heh, will have to check with the DM to make sure

Now, for the Improved Rapid strike...would ALL of the attacks (not just the extras) be at a -5???

Why is your DM letting you play a Gold Dragon if you have a minimum understanding of the rules to begin with?

When your DMs asks "How are you able to do this" are you simply going to reffer him to this thread?

I'm not sure what kind of campaign your in but I would advise you to stick to a normal race and normal class, but that is your decision in the end. You gotta learn to walk before you can run, and optimization is out right Marathon-Spiriting.

I do not have a minimal understanding of the rules...I have been playing for over 6 years now...

I just needed help figuring out how to play a non-standard race along with adding classes to it.

Gotta start somewhere now do you?
