| #1beldar_mithosApr 24, 2008 19:34:19 | As we all know, golems are very good shields, even from the most basic amongst them they can crack heads quite well. I'm not sure whether or not Kingdoms of Kalamar is 3.0,or 3.5 but in either case there is a prestige class called the Golem Master in the book. Here's the low down HD:d6,not the best but we all know what's worse. Is a 5/10 spell-casting class, not amazing at all,but that's not the point of this thread. Need Alchemy-8 and Knowledge (Arcana)-10,so you'll be 7th level going into the class. Craft Wondruos Item,Craft Magic Arms and Armor (Oddly enough they don't mention craft construct, but take it as you need it to make golems) You must have also made a golem,or any other type of construct to gain entry. No biggy, humuncoli are easy to make, and there's a class that seems custom made for just this, the Artificer. All of the artificers abilities mesh quite well with the golem master. But we're only going to focus on the first 5 levels of the prestige class as it is sub-par all around, but the first 5 level open up a whole new world of stuff for you. 1-Craft Homunculus w/o paying the XP cost 3-Mastery of All Forms, this is one of the abilities we're here for. and I quote here. "As long as the golem master aquires the correct spells,he may make ANY golem REGARDLESS of class requirements as described in the MM. 4-Animating Touch, once per day animate object via touch as the spell animate objects 1/day. 5-Gargoyle,you can animate and control a gargoyle with average hit points, that lasts for 24 hours or until it is destroyed. Can only have one at a time. And also gained at 5th lvl,the 2nd reason we want this class. Secrets of Building:At 5th lvl reduce the cost to build a golem by 50%,and the time by 25%. Now not bad,but not great either. However combine the Secrets of Building with Exceptional Artisan, reducing the time by 25%,for a total of 50%,make golems in 1/2 the time! Now tack on Extraordinary Artisan and reduce the cost by 25% once again, for a grand total of a whopping 75% total. And finally throw in Legendary Artisan to reduce that XP cost by 25%. Now,add all of this up, and you have a way to build golems for only a 1/4th of the cost and half the time, and with a 25% reduction in XP cost, making your craft reserve go much further, and your retain essence even more powerful. Combined with the ability from the artificer to take 10 on checks, you can really never fail once your UMD is pumped to a decent level. Now,here's the thing I am not too sure of. According to Mastery of All Forms, you ignore class requirements when you are making golems. So does this technically allow this guy to build Epic level golems for 1/4 of the cost, half the time, and with a 25% reduction in XP? If so say hello to the best golem builder EVER. I'm unsure how to continue the build, but I was thinking that Artificer 15/Golem Master 5 would be perfect. You only lose 3 caster levels,so you still get your infusions, and practiced spellcaster hikes that up without blinking. And a side note..just to keep people from going nuts. READ THIS AS WELL!!!!!!!!! Mastery of All Forms is something I am unsure of,either it allows access to epic level golems at drastically reduced option at MUCH lower levels,or it simply makes regular golems MUCH easier to pump out. Let me repeat I am unsure if this allows access to epic golems. And even if it doesn't just play a dragonwrought kobold and that more or less solves that problem. AND NO FIGHTING OVER THE DRAGONWROUGHT PLEASE!!!!!!! He has his own thread,go bash him there :D |

| #3ninja1Apr 24, 2008 22:05:30 | You really got my hopes up, so I had to google-fu the heck out of it... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kingdoms_of_Kalamar Not only does it look 3.0... but it's third party.... I'll avoid this as I'm allergic... |
| #4taeldrin_laesrashApr 24, 2008 22:26:31 | You really got my hopes up, so I had to google-fu the heck out of it... Not exactly. It said they had the rights to make official D&D material. Pretty cool. |
| #5ninja1Apr 25, 2008 7:59:15 | I guess "had" is the operative word here as their liscence expired... Still, you're right Taeldrin Laesrash, they did bear the "official" logo. Is that a new category? RAW - WotC vs RAW - officially liscenced third party? I never thought about that before... :D |
| #6phoenix00Apr 25, 2008 8:18:47 | I guess "had" is the operative word here as their liscence expired... nope, it is the same category as dragon if not more obscure since very few people have seen it. |
| #7beldar_mithosApr 25, 2008 12:58:55 | Well, thanks for all of the info guys, and as for my question to the key ability of the prestige class do you think someone could actually answer my question? I mean come on this would be far from the first time material that was out there has been used. I mean Dragon is used all the time on these boards, and do yo uknow how hard it is to get a DM to agree to practically anything from Dragon? At least with this there's a book you can plop down infront of him that had that D&D logo on it. But I degress,in either case thanks for the info on the setting being 3.0. |

| #9fil_kearneyApr 25, 2008 13:27:29 | Props, Beldar. To answer your questions: maybe? technically, if level req's are removed, then yes... but that sounds like DM Rule 0 territory to me... 1st to allow something MORE fringe than dragon mag, and THEN to get the okay on using epic golems (mind your budget... even with reductions, most may be beyond your means without craft/fabricate exploits) Kudos on double posting. Your obviously excited about this, and I personally plan on using it against a certain team of upstarts... |
| #10beldar_mithosApr 25, 2008 13:34:42 | I figured it would be DM rule territory, and sorry for the double post, dropped my freakin key board and it landed on the escape key and killed the load so Ihit it again just to be sure. And have fun annoying your party with that guy,at the very least this is a powerful tool for DM's. Oh,and btw I'm in a Kalamar game right now is the reason this was thrown up,now if only I can convince him to let me play an artificer. And money isn't really a problem due to another character in the party using a truely broken prestige class in the book. |
| #11madprak_mark2Apr 25, 2008 13:55:11 | nope, it is the same category as dragon if not more obscure since very few people have seen it. True, but hell, it's a damned good reason for me to track down a copy of KoK... a book I was vauguely interested in anyway... |
| #12loganic1Apr 25, 2008 15:05:03 | IIRC KoK is where the Irresistible spell feat is from. Feat negates any saving throws in any spell. DMM:IS Slay Living FTW. Making mass golems is cool, but any cleric that cast an instant kill no save spell has got to be cooler. |
