A Warlock and another PC with the feat "Spellfire Wielder" is an interesting combo.
The 1st-level wizard in my group killed an orc shaman with a 17d6 blast, thereafter the shaman's four companions surrendered. Two minutes later my warlock recharged the wizard completely.

I'd say make a druid and a cloistered cleric, both single-classed, or two druids or two clerics.

The druid takes Natural Bond (CV) at 3, and at level 4 he gets a Fleshraker (MM3) or any Level -3 companion, but still counts his whole druid level thanks to Natural Bond. The druid is the melee tank/dps, with support casting, buffing, and summoning.

The cleric is a kobold using the cloistered cleric variant (UA), he starts out with the Trickery and Kobold domains, but during character creation he'd secretly switched to worshipping Vecna (or FR equivelant) and has the feat Whispered Secrets (RoD) at level 1. That gives him everything he needs to be a trapmonkey/skillmonkey, plus as a single-classed Cleric he can Rebuke/Command any undead they find and do everything a Cleric is normally capable of. He could eventually even get a Dagger of Denial (CD), which is just amazing all by itself.

For two Druids, both should stay single-classed and get Natural Bond. One focus on feats like Augment Summoning and Imbued Summoning (PH2), the other focus on feats like Augent Healing and Spontaneous Healer (CD). For two Clerics, make one a kobold cloistered cleric, the other a melee-focused build.

If you'd said Player's Handbook 2 was available, I'd have said a Beguiler/Wizard/Ultimate Magus with Able Learner and either a melee Cleric or a healing/buffing Druid.

Druid 20 - quite possibly half-orc with the Races of Destiny Sub levels, as your healer/tank.

Strongheart Halfling Rogue 2/Wiz 5/Ruathar 3/Incantatrix 10 covers your trapfinding and arcane needs.

Leadership is a very good choice here.

Any party of 2 will probably require a little love from the DM in terms of how the campaign will be run.

That said, I'm currently playing a campaign in which the only PCs are a ranger (me) and a rogue. It allows us to do a little of most things -- city, wilderness, sneaking, fighting, magic, diplomacy -- but things can turn very bad very fast if we're not prepared (unsurprisingly).

If you want to make things a lot easier on your players, you could make it a gestalt campaign. It’s not actually like having four players, but it lets the players branch out quite a bit.

A straight Druid and a straight wizard. One can melee (in big-***** bear form)/heal/summon creatures in combat, the other can buff/battlefield control/debuff in combat. Out of combat, the one can keep them alive in the wilderness and the other can keep them safe in the rural & urban environs.

You should consider using the Gestalt rules out of the DMG for such a small group. Also, I think I would go with wizard 20 cleric 20 with DMM persist ftw.
