| #1cole_caecusMar 22, 2009 23:17:13 | I need help finding a good PrC for a cleric. Help Please? |
| #2koushiroMar 23, 2009 0:15:08 | There are so many good prestige classes for clerics, but perhaps you might want to give people more information about your cleric? Who is your cleric's deity? What is your cleric's alignment? What race is your cleric? What level is your cleric? What kind of campaign world is your cleric existing in? What do you want your cleric to do? What role in the typical party style does your cleric intend to fill? |
| #3cole_caecusMar 23, 2009 0:18:06 | Dwarf Cleric Diety- Moradin Alignment- CN Level 15 total, havent made him yet Dont know the world, havent started the game, dont have a lot of info on it. I believe we are in Faerun. My cleric is my cohort, i would like him to be a great healer. He is going to fill the Heal Spot of our party. I was looking at WarPriest, it looks really good for what i want. |
| #4dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 0:34:49 | If your deity is Moradin, you cannot be Chaotic Neutral, I'm afraid. Moradin is Lawful Good, and clerics must be within one alignment step of their diety. So LN, CG, LG, NG are your options. |
| #5cole_caecusMar 23, 2009 0:44:03 | Lol, oops, forgot about clerics, CG it is then. |
| #6dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 0:54:00 | Unfortunately that means no Walker in The Wastes for us. Are you sure I can't convince you that your campaign world needs more mummies and deserts? ;) More seriously, that actually opens up our PrC options quite a bit when it comes to healers. Let me do some research, I guess. My first thought was War Weaver, but that requires arcane spells of third level. Does anyone know a way to early-entry that? If we're twisting things far enough, we might be able to build you a nice sorcerer-healer, but I think that's an optimization endeavor for another day. |
| #7WeezelMar 23, 2009 1:04:40 | Though this doesn't really answer the PrC question, I'd suggest stacking healing-boosting feats on him. Quicken Spell and DMM:Quicken will also let him pull out quickened spells when needed. I've DM'd a group who has a cleric cohort with the healing reserve feat and it was extremely useful especially in very long fights, or days with a lot of encounters (since he'd just run out of healing spells otherwise). However I'm not sure at that level the touch of healing would be worthwhile. Also, just a side note that Chaotic Good is two steps removed from Lawful Good ![]() |
| #8dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 1:55:42 | Oh crap, it is, isn't it? My fault, sorry. I almost always use neutrals like Wee Jas, etc. Neutral good is like chaotic good, but with fewer constraints. |
| #9cole_caecusMar 23, 2009 2:07:03 | ACK! people confusing me. Ok then, he will be NG then arg ;) |
| #10sofawallMar 23, 2009 2:23:23 | Well, Paladins focused for it can make good healers. Lay on Hands for 500+ per day at 15th level. |
| #11WeezelMar 23, 2009 3:18:57 | Well, Paladins focused for it can make good healers. Lay on Hands for 500+ per day at 15th level. Sounds awesome... could you elaborate on how to boost lay on hands to that kind of level? I'm always interested in things that make paladins more playable. |
| #12PramxnimMar 23, 2009 3:28:21 | Well, the Generic Caster variant from Unearthed Arcana (available in the SRD) can cast spells from any spell list, and their spells can be either Arcane or Divine. Go with that if you want a War Weaver entry who can heal. Granted you lose a granted domain and you'll be rather strapped for spells (they get fewer spells known than a Sorcerer) but that's one simple way of getting into that class w/o excessive multiclassing |
| #13sofawallMar 23, 2009 4:09:29 | Sounds awesome... could you elaborate on how to boost lay on hands to that kind of level? | #14dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 4:13:00 | Yes, but that involves playing a paladin. Friends don't let friends play paladins. Let's work with the assumptions we're given. This is just a sketch of an odd idea, so if you don't like it or find it less than fetching, pay it no heed. I just love war weaver more than a sane man should. I know, I know, it's MAD. But it is still pretty cool. Dorf the Dwarf, Cleric Of Moradin 7 Cloistered Cleric 1 Nar Demon Binder 5 War Weaver 2 Any class that adds spells to our demonbinder list OR advances are cleric progression. Needs: Iron Will (Blech) Spell Focus(Conjuration) Enlarge Spell A smattering of skills. 4th Level cleric spells 8th level demonbinder spells. Not as exciting as it sounds. War weaving. This is a big deal. Why? Because we get ludicrous things from it. Every heal or buff spell of fifth level and below we cast affects our whole party, has a range of at least close, and takes no extra time for this whole thing. Oh and we can store 4 spells in our tapestry, which lasts longer than it takes to refill our spells. In short, we give up much of our cleric progression in exchange for an almost arbitrary amount of spells per day. Oh, and nothing forbids DMM through our tapestry. Only limitation is that we cannot cast spells with a range of just personal through the tapestry. Note that I have no idea what happens if you try to use chain spell with the tapestry. I think it doesn't work, but tapestry targeting rules are quite strange. Actually, I lied. As far as I can tell, it's perfectly legal to chain-spell cure critical wounds through your tapestry and recurse it across your party. This seems ridiculous, but.... This is always worth mentioning. |
| #15sofawallMar 23, 2009 5:03:47 | What's worth mentioning is a 760 damage touch attack, or 760 healing, or any combination of the above. But still, a decently optimized cleric with the healing domain can heal almost as much with JUST domain spells ![]() Stupid "clerics always win" rule. Still, gotta give some love to Lay On Hands. |
| #16dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 5:09:11 | Painful but true. Fortunately, damage trumps healing. Unfortunately, clerics are... well, they're clerics! |
| #17carnivoreMar 23, 2009 5:39:43 | Dwarf Cleric try this: Dwarf(LG) Cloistered Cleric 3/ Church inquisitor 4/ Combat medic 5/ Sacred Exorcist 3 Patron: Moradin Domains: Knowledge(cloistered Cleric bonus) Dwarf Earth Inquisition(Church inquisitor bonus) Feats: Mobility(Combat Medic Bonus) 1st lvl: Combat Casting 3rd lvl: Dodge 6th lvl: Touch of Healing(Reserve) 9th lvl: Summon Elemental(Reserve) 12th lvl: Mitigate Suffering(Reserve) 15th lvl: Acidic Splatter(Reserve) gives Good Healing(Hit point and Ability point, unlimited uses), spontaneous Heal Good Support abilities(Summon Elemental and Ranged Touch Attacks, unlimited uses) good spells and Skills and Evasion :D :D |
| #18pithicaMar 23, 2009 9:47:30 | Along the same lines... Cloistered Cleric 3/Church Inquisitor 2/Divine Oracle 2/Earth Dreamer 5/Runecaster 3 Pretty feat heavy, and sucky BAB (but that's what DMM:Persist is for), but very flavorful to dwarf-dom, in my mind, and pretty dang capable. Has Evasion, Earthglide, Tremorsense, full casting, and potentially both Knowledge and Law devotion for free. |
| #19hijaxxMar 23, 2009 10:29:13 | How can you meet the arcane spell requirements of runcaster? |
| #20pithicaMar 23, 2009 10:35:13 | There isn't one...You're thinking of Runesmith. |
| #21hijaxxMar 23, 2009 10:40:40 | i am. (what book is runecaster from?) |
| #22pithicaMar 23, 2009 10:49:52 | PGTF. It's not a fantastic PrC. I only went with it for the dwarfy flavor, mostly. |
| #23dr_rocktopusMar 23, 2009 20:41:21 | I've been thinking about it, and with some tweaking, I think the war-weaver build is great actually. Using DMM chain-spell with tapestry-cast cures and buffs is a hilarious prospect, since their range changes so you don't even need reach spell. If you can just get to sixth level cleric spells, you can use sanctum spell to cast heal through your tapestry. That's nothing to scoff at. |
| #24cattynebulartMar 23, 2009 22:34:03 | I haven't read the entire thread yet but a quick suggestion anyway, though it is not optimal for a dwarf since the most important stat for this build is charisma. It also requires you to be LG unless you are using one of the paladin variants. In addition your cohorts deity must have the healing domain: Paladin 7/Divine Crusader 8 of the Healing domain. Lay on hands and cast spells from the healing domain, at 9'th level DC you would get Mass Heal too. Lacks restoration asside from what a level 7 paladin gets. On top of that you get paladin spells. |
