Hi Guys,

Going to be attempting my first character and sessions of 1st edition soon.  I rolled extremely well plust racial bonuses and looking for any guidance or assistance you could offer for optimizing my FIRST, 1st edition character.

16 STR
18 Dex
19 Int
14 Con
13 Wis
15 CHA
17 cumliness.... or whatever

Current plan is that i have Plate with Bow as weapon of choice.  Offset items will be shield, longsword and dagger.  Really looking for some solid design plans as im struggling with book and how to create my character to completion.

Thanks

Well, f-mu is definitely the way to go. It may slow you down for a level, but you might want to add in theif levels just for the heck of it. In the long term, it's not going to hurt you at all.

You lose elven stealth if you go with plate mail, but your AC will be quite good and hard to hit at -1 (excellent for first level).

You won't be doing much damage.

You can't cast arcane spells in plate mail, even as an elf. Elven plate, yes, but that's high level. So, you're limited to chain mail. Make sure you have a shield.

Weapon Profs: Longsword, Shortsword, Longbow, Mace/flail for fighter,  Dagger for MU (it all uses fighter THACO).

You can't specialize as multi-class, so you're a bit behind the attack curve.

At level 1, your best offensive spell is sleep, your best defensive spell is shield.

You get +8 languages, so pick those out as you like.

Your hit points are going to be very, very low compared to 3.5. Be ready for that. Be ready to fight and run away.

The longbow is your best level 1 weapon, because you get 2 at/rd with it.

You can dual wield in 1E with -1 to hit if you have an 18 Dex. So be ready to use shield/sword, or sword/second sword as you prefer (take advantage of the +1 racial to hit bonus!!)

With no CON bonus you're going to be VERY low on hit points your entire career, averaging 3.5/level. If you can switch your Str and Con scores, I advise you to do so. +1 Hp/level adds up over time, while the +1 to damage can be taken care of when you can cast level 2 spells, OR you get Gauntlets of Ogre Power and ignore the Str you were born with.

it's a solid character. Your staying power is going to be your biggest weakness, and you might want to address that first. A lower starting Str can be overcome. Low Con, cannot.
