| #1blazercanadaDec 16, 2008 0:26:16 | So here's the dealio sillyho. The campaign is, there is no campaign. At least not really, it's basically a hack and slash. Since we just finished up a roleplaying evil campaign. I was a bard that did absolutely no combat, and for this hack and slash campaign I want something ridiculously badass that won't break the game, but will stomp face. My stat rolls are as follows : 17 17 15 15 14 13 Yes those are some pretty solid rolls I can make anything. DM is making us start at level 1, but at level 2 we are given a bonus stat point to add as well. I have been leaning towards a Halfling (Monk 1 / Fighter 2 / Cleric 17) Archer style. Obviously monk for the wisdom ac. Archer because my dex will be ridiculously good for using a bow and the lack of armor. Low strength since I can always use Divine Might in the future. This is the build I was going for, but I thought about coming on here and asking for some opinions from all of you ![]() I was also thinking about a Human Duskblade, I really enjoy playing Caster/Combat characters. Essentially I am on here asking all of you to give me your opinions as to a class/build I could dominate with but at the same time not get bored because we all know sticking to one style is somewhat boring. That's why I am leaning towards a Divine combat caster or an arcane combat caster ![]() |
| #2neraagileDec 16, 2008 0:51:11 | What books do you have available? Dragon Magazines? Any homebrew? |
| #3blazercanadaDec 16, 2008 0:52:33 | I can basically use any book available. As long as there is no level adjustment on race. Anything goes pretty much. My Dm is fairly open. |
| #4neraagileDec 16, 2008 0:59:58 | In which case I would suggest that you take a look at the Tome of Battle, it has a lot of melee oriented classes that by themselves are capable of performing very well in combat, combine it with something like Cleric (which has a lot of good buffs) and that might just be the way to go. |
| #5stpetegamerDec 16, 2008 7:44:38 | Well I get to be that guy I guess but have you thought of druid 20 or wildshape ranger MoMF? Why not play a DMM persisting cleric who stomps fighters and has full casting? Oh and with your suggested build do not actually take a level of monk buy a monk's belt 13k.... |
| #6jameswilliamogleDec 16, 2008 8:19:04 | I'd suggest an Anima Mage build for the arcane caster / warrior version. There's a few Fochlucan Lyricist builds that aren't that painful while leveling up, too. (I personally hate playing divine casting warriors... I always end up rebuilding them to something else.) |
| #7eldarielDec 16, 2008 8:27:36 | Cleric 20 is indeed the way to go. Monk's Belt gets you the Wis to AC without wasting a level. You can pick Craft Wondrous Items later to afford it more easily. And Cleric just gets more abilities per level than Fighter, so Cleric-levels > Fighter-levels. I'd probably go with an Old Human DMM: Persist Cleric 20 Archer. 13/16/14/12/18/16 is a great array for an Archer Cleric. You could whirl around Str and Cha for Composite Bows, but chances are, the extra Turning is more valuable than the point of damage. Just some God with Longbow as the favored weapon, and the War-domain along with Planning or Undeath. Gets you free Weapon Focus. Alternatively, one could play an Elf but that would result in a more problematic stat split (well, Wild Elf would be fine - Int is your only real dumpscore anyways). |
| #8frerezarDec 16, 2008 8:45:20 | Well it might be less optimyzed but you could just go with the swordsage unarmed variant, then cleric and RKV, That could give you a lot of combat prowess and with enought tweaking full spellcasting (or maybe just grab warblade and a monks belt). Yay for DMM + maneuvers |
| #9neraagileDec 16, 2008 9:35:24 | RKV requires you to take Crusader because you need Devoted Spirit, that or the Martial feats. That aside, RKV is really awesome when you have something to use swift actions, spend a turn attempt to get a swift action and use it with something like Ordained Champion from Complete Champion that can cast any War Domain spell with a casting time of a standard action as a swift. |
| #10blazercanadaDec 16, 2008 13:21:14 | Thanks for these replies I will definitely look at alot of these classes and decide what I would want to play My group already has a cleric apparently, and a sorcerer. So we will see what I end up going with haha ![]() |
| #11feloniouselaDec 16, 2008 16:01:07 | If you like Duskblade try: Duskblade 5/Abjurant Champion 1/Suel Arcanamach 1/Abjurant Champion +4/Suel Arcanamach +3/Spellsword 1/Dragonslayer 1/Dragon Disciple 4 or Duskblade 3/Fighter 1/Lion Totem Barbarian 1/same from 6 on as above build or Duskblade 3/Fighter 2/Lion Totem Barbarian 1/Suel Arcanamach 1/Abjurant Champion 5/Suel Arcanamach +3/Spellsword 1/Dragon Disciple 4 Use Illumian with Aeshkrau. Jack your Strength through the roof. First build has more spellcasting (Use Versatile Spellcasting feat to fuel SA spells with Db spells), second one gets pounce and an extra feat to burn, third one delays Abjurant Champion final goodies by one level in turn for a net gain of 3 feats (no Dragonslayer requirement of Dodge, plus two levels of fighter). Better spells than a Duskblade, better abilities, better combat capability...same basic idea though. You could go the normal gish route to eventually get 9th level spells and all, but the early and mid levels are much more painful, especially if you will be doing TONS of combat even at that point. |
| #12blazercanadaDec 16, 2008 23:39:01 | I've actually never played a duskblade before. I really like clerics because of their combat/spellcasting abilities. So I would probably like the duskblade. I might try out that build you suggested ![]() |
| #13feloniouselaDec 17, 2008 14:43:49 | I've actually never played a duskblade before. I really like clerics because of their combat/spellcasting abilities. So I would probably like the duskblade. I might try out that build you suggested Don't get me wrong....a fully cheesed out Cleric w/ all the Turn-n-burn metamagic and all that is probably gonna be more dominant than the builds I suggested, but, personally, I never really liked the whole DMM persistent stuff so I stick to builds like those above. However, the builds above should be better than average all the way through, and pretty powerful with the right feats and spells by the time they need to be pretty powerful. |
| #14amadithegreatDec 17, 2008 15:48:43 | Psion. Level 9 take Expanded Knowledge: Divine Power. Here's how it works: Any power => Erudite Spell to Power Feature => Geomancer Spell Versatility. Every spell in game exists as power. Gain any spell. Win. Quicken it or something for lulz. Failing that by DM fiat: Ardent 10 / Slayer 10. |
| #15ChristopherGrovesDec 17, 2008 15:57:10 | When will the game start and how far will it go? Some fun duskblades ... Bard 1 / Duskblade 4 / Ur Priest 2 / Duskblade +1 / Mystic Theurge 8 Duskblade 13 / barbarian 1 / Rage Mage 6 Duskblade 13 / Initiate of the Sevenfold Veil 7 (w/ heighten spell) Duskblade 13 / Sandshaper 1 / Escalation Mage 6 Duskblade 13 / Elemental Adept 1 / Sanctified One of Kord 1 / something 5 |
| #16jaronkDec 17, 2008 16:12:38 | See, I'd just go with Lion Totem Barbarian. Smash everything. Nothing but pure smash. Whee! Or, if you like, I've got some shield builds around here somewhere that smash the heck out of enemies with Shield Charge and Shield Smash. I believe the basic idea was Barbarian 2/Fighter 8/War Hulk 10, using the Dungeoncrasher varient for Fighters and Lion Totem, Wolf Totem, and Whirling Frenzy for the Barbarian. Be a Dragonborn Water Orc, get Permanent Enlarge Person when you can, and take Shield Charge, Shield Slam, Power Attack, Improved Bull Rush, Shock Trooper, Knockback and Leap Attack. Get a Bashing Heavy Shield with Valorous Skillfull Armor Spikes. Every attack on the charge (and you get up to four of those) deals massive damage, trips your enemy, gives you an extra attack if you trip the enemy, and dazes the enemy for a round, plus every attack hits everyone within reach. Also, every attack knocks enemies back and you can direct where they go, ensuring that you can charge again next round against your floored and dazed enemies. Bulldozer, baby. JaronK |
| #17blazercanadaDec 17, 2008 23:45:05 | yeah but I am sure a duskblade wouldn't be too bad. To me the DMM cleric is a bit cheap and I never even thought about making one with that feat at first. Since everyone suggests it because it is so badass makes me inclined to take it but at the same time try something else. The duskblade seems like a pretty solid combo that I am looking for. the psion idea I will try another time I think, it is fairly interesting ;) I've never played a psion before so that's worth a shot too. That smash build sounds badass :D I like the idea of battering around your enemies ;) and stepping on their throats as you walk to the next enemy :P |
| #18kell_kheraptisDec 18, 2008 8:23:21 | Psion. Level 9 take Expanded Knowledge: Divine Power. What would the progression for that look like? Erudite 9/Geomancer 10/xxx 1? (Mindbender for telepathy is a personal favorite) |
| #19amadithegreatDec 18, 2008 8:57:32 | What would the progression for that look like? Erudite 9/Geomancer 10/xxx 1? (Mindbender for telepathy is a personal favorite) ... You don't need Geomancer levels, you need to prove that geomancers exist, hereby if your DM tries to disagree with Expanded Knowledge: Divine Power, tell him to open Complete Divine, and look at "Spell Versatility." I mean, Spell to Power feature of Erudites states: "Any arcane spell.". Geomancers Archivist/Arcane Casters can cast any divine spell as arcane spell, therefore any divine spell works too. Capizhz? |
| #20kell_kheraptisDec 18, 2008 9:03:49 | ... You don't need Geomancer levels, you need to prove that geomancers exist, hereby if your DM tries to disagree with Expanded Knowledge: Divine Power, tell him to open Complete Divine, and look at "Spell Versatility." Gotcha, so it's just an Erudite, using the versatility rules of the Geomancer to open up all spells, and the spell to power rules. Note to self, make a psigish out of that >.> |
| #218w_gremlin_dupDec 22, 2008 21:07:05 | Druid.... turn in to a flashraker eat people with your fleshraker pet... later turn in to a lesser briarbair (what ever they are called) spike people |
| #22true_shinkenDec 23, 2008 17:16:46 | Definetly Duskblade. These guys are godly in the lower levels. Also, check the Suel Arcanamach Handbook on my sig (oh my, it's been a while since I said that) |
| #23ChristopherGrovesDec 23, 2008 17:23:24 | Gotcha, so it's just an Erudite, using the versatility rules of the Geomancer to open up all spells, and the spell to power rules. Note to self, make a psigish out of that >.> I'm not sure it really works that way. Read the Geomancer ... it doesn't make all arcane spells divine ... it allows you to use parameters from one on the other. If your GM lets it fly, you're golden though ... |
| #24amadithegreatDec 23, 2008 18:15:44 | I'm not sure it really works that way. Read the Geomancer ... it doesn't make all arcane spells divine ... it allows you to use parameters from one on the other. Yeah, thereby it's possible to cast any divine spell as arcane spell. Thereby for a very short time of casting, there must exist an arcane version of any divine spell. Thereby arcane versions of all divine spells exist. |
| #25ChristopherGrovesDec 23, 2008 18:55:53 | I don't think that's the case ... you aren't casting it "as an arcane spell" ... you're casting it and then modifying it with other things - using a different casting stat for DC, etc. ... not arbitrarily making it an arcane spell. |
| #26SIKBUZDec 23, 2008 20:26:55 | See, I'd just go with Lion Totem Barbarian. Smash everything. Nothing but pure smash. Whee! Hey JaronK, how did you get four attacks?? War Hulk doesn't gain BAB does it?? I'd be interested in this build?? |
| #27carnivoreDec 23, 2008 21:27:33 | Hey JaronK, how did you get four attacks?? War Hulk doesn't gain BAB does it?? I'd be interested in this build?? Barbarian 2/Fighter 8/War Hulk 10 = BAB +10 full Attack= +10/+5 Pounce gives Full attack on Charge.... thus Leap Attack+charge+Valorious... gives lots of Damage... get Free Bullrush with PA from Knockback = +10 + free bullrush/ +5 + free bullrush = 4 attacks... on 2 attacks you can Trip, which also gives an additional attack :D |
| #28dannarDec 23, 2008 22:25:09 | So here's the dealio sillyho. The campaign is, there is no campaign. At least not really, it's basically a hack and slash. Since we just finished up a roleplaying evil campaign. I was a bard that did absolutely no combat, and for this hack and slash campaign I want something ridiculously badass that won't break the game, but will stomp face. Two words; switch blade sam... Fighter 20 Carry a bandolier of weapons. Quick draw + throw anything. Throw swords while at range of the enemy, and then when you come close, draw your two-bladed sword of brilliance, and get 8 attacks per round ignoring armor, make it transmuting (MiC) and it ignores all damage reduction after a round too... May not be the MOST optimized hack and slash character, but it was certainly effective, and it was a WHOLE lot of fun |
| #29ChristopherGrovesDec 23, 2008 22:41:00 | Barbarian 2/Fighter 8/War Hulk 10 = BAB +10 Hmmm ... I'd think +10/+5 = 2 ... then +1 from Whirling Frenzy and maybe +1 from a Skillful weapon (unless he was doing an off-hand w/ the shield bash) ... AND THEN the bullrushes ... |
| #30unundindurDec 23, 2008 22:51:00 | For pure smash (and taking into account you said you did NOT want to break the game), I would say barbarian or warblade. Maybe you could even mix them up? How optimized are the other players, and what are they playing? If its not a super-power game you could do something simple like lion-barbarian/warblade/fighter, and go absolutely berserk. Take the frenzy variant from unearthed arcana for maximum fun ![]() |
| #31SIKBUZDec 24, 2008 0:08:18 | Ahh thanks Carnivore |
| #32jaronkDec 24, 2008 3:42:58 | Skillful sets your BAB to 3/4 your class level automatically, so the build I posted has +15 BAB by level 20 due to that enchantment. That's three base attacks, +1 for Whirling Frenzy. I wasn't counting all the extra attacks you get from Improved Trip (which are a ton, especially since every attack hits everyone within range). But that reminds me, you can drop two Fighter levels for Feat Rogue levels (from UA) gaining you a bonus feat, a bunch of skill points, evasion, and trapfinding at the cost of 4 hitpoints. Since your real BAB doesn't matter with the skillful weapon, that's a great trade. JaronK |
| #33ChristopherGrovesDec 24, 2008 7:38:24 | Wonder if you could do it with Survivor? Hahahaha ... Barb X / Fighter Y / Survivor 5 / War Hulk 10 |
