Hello ladies and gentlemen, this is a thread to post ideas on handbooks. They are really endless, as you can optimize anything you can think off.

So, out of my mind and from private discussions, here is a list of topics that haven't got a handbook of sorts yet:
  • Incantatrix (sure, everyone knows it's powerful, but it needs a list of spellcraft bonuses, powerful things you can do with snatch spell, suggested metamagic, etc).
  • Blasting (this is actually chaos_redefined's idea and he is up to it).
  • Anima Mage (what vestiges work well, what metamagic to get, what to take after anima, etc).
  • Ardent!
  • Barbarian!
  • ToB classes (although, not actually needed).
  • Rogue (i'm thinking that i might do this next, but not soon).
  • Sorcerer! (there are a lot of unique stuff out there to make them different than wizards).

You can maybe find help from other members this way; it's better if two work on a topic than a single mind.

Somebody had an idea I saw to do a handbook about the various affiliations one can join. I think its a good idea.

There's not a formal handbook for Incarnates, though I like Todd's Incarnate by the Numbers thread, but its not a very comprehensive list.

A Trapsmith guide might be useful; its my favorite Rogue PrC, currently (maybe thats for the Rogue book).

Miniguides to:
Death Attack
Crafting (magical & non-magical)

might be useful (I haven't seen an item creation feat on a CO regular build since... well, its been a while).

if its a wish list,

a leadership book would be nice..

also

a book on the mechanics of damage..

- SA dice
- Power attack
- Smite
- Unarmed

that sorta of thing..

otherwise,

if someone has a hand book that isnt already on the co wiki handbooks list please add it...

i sorted everything by source book, but i could really careless how it organized as long as it makes some sort of sense...

I may be working on a Truenamer Handbook as part of my research for fixing the whole damn class.

And I will probably do a Gestalt Handbook and Legacy Weapon booklet if I feel the motivation.

Edit: Hell, I may even do a MoI handbook.

I wish I could, but I am the sort of man, who is very fond of Spellthieves, but happens to suck at building them. It'd be like a blind man guiding a group of normal people.

mh, what about a dragon shaman handbook... probably not the best class out there, but that's one more reason for a good handbook.

As DM noticed before, barbarian (with all those flavorful alternative class features from CC or the CityscapeWE) screams "handbook".

A domain handbook - something like a specialized cleric handbook - would be awesome: Which domains give great spells? Which are useful to achieve PrCs faster? Which domain powers are good? And so on...

Other then that? Something like the lesser celebrated monsters handbook - ooze for example :-) or fey (not just pixie).

Your Soulknife Handbook is a link to the hypertext SRD for Implosion.

That's hysterical. Though really it should link here.

There is a Warmage handbook, Right? Todd did it. Good stuff with warmage/incarnate and warmage/anima mage. It's a bit old, though.

Barbarian DEFINITELY needs an (updated) handbook. I'd be willing to work on that with somebody.

I may also work on a new one for Lurks, just cause I'm masochistic that way. There's one on the psiboards but it has a lot of unfinished ideas and wyvernslayer's not around too much anymore.

There's constantly lots of talk about Bloodlines. But no Bloodline Handbook!

Supposedly, a CO regular claimed to be interested in starting one up, but it never came to fruition.

Bloodlines are confusing for many folks (especially non math-types).

We need a Bloodline Handbook!

Your Soulknife Handbook is a link to the hypertext SRD for Implosion.

It's a bit of a joke; "how to make a soulknife" links usually go to implosion, "how to make a divine mind" usually goes to death urge.

What would everyone think if I did a Celestial Channeling handbook?

I'm sure we'd think it would be best if we knew what Celestial Channeling is. Is it in BoED?

It is possession for Good outsiders. Really strong option, not suitable for PCs under most DM's watch. And the most recent rules are in the ECS, but they didn't reprint half of the stuff you need to use it. BoED has the most complete rulings on it.

Ah. I don't have BoED, and I didn't connect the Eberron thing with Channeling. You're right it's not really for PCs...so why would you want a handbook for it?

Because the BoED has a spell that allows it, and it is freaking wrong! Granted, the Celestial can withdraw from the bargain at any time, thus screwing you over, but it is really potent.

There are some rules in FC2 (or FC1, I don't remember) as well, though not so much for the "good" option.

FC1 has the updated rules on Possession, which are pretty effective with a Bound demon. FC2 has Faustian Pacts. We need a handbook to abuse both of those.

+1 Blaster Handbook
+1 Monk Handbook

I'd also love to see a coherent guide to bards out there. I know a lot of people look at 'em and scoff, but that base class is really fantastic if you build it right.

Well, you still have to preform Good aligned acts to retain the bonuses it grants, but hey, if it hurts, it works.

I should point out that, when Dictum says that I am writing a blaster handbook, I am actually doing this amongst other things. I have a lot of other things going on atm, so, if someone rushes in and writes one for me, I will contribute whatever smatterings of a handbook I have (which won't be much...) and let them have their fun.

But, after two threads on the front page had people trying to build blasters and not listening to reason, I started to realize we need something to keep the uninformed happy.

Also, +1 bard handbook. D_M, hurry up.

I think a blaster handbook is definitely warranted - imo optimization is often as not about bringing sub-par choices up to playable standard. I don't have time to write it, but if someone does I'll try and contribute.

Also, how about an Aura Handbook? For all the Marshals, Bards, Dragon Shamans, etc out there.

I'd like to see that between the auras in dragon magic, marshals, bards, dragon shamans, paladins (and paladins of freedom), and classes like fist of raziel that grant magic circle against evil, there are tons of options for building an interesting aura-character. We need help. :-)

A hand book for Handbook ideas. DM really does have everything.
A handbook or at lest a simple guild on Buying Magic Item's would be good. More correctly "Which Item's/kind of items should class X put a the top of their grocery list?"
The Bargain Bin basement and it's less-useful-but-still-useful cousin "Worthless & Overpriced magic items" are excellent resources.

However I often find myself with a 13th level Rogue/Wizard/Swiftblade character thinking on Acrance-Swordsage, and no clue what items I need to stock up on, and Bunko telling me that nightsticks are a must have investment seem to lack relevance.

A short guild which gives a brief "Kind of items to look out for" or even "Specific Item to obtain" for each of the PHB Classes, Party Roles, Unique rolls would go a long way for people who come to the boards asking whether they should wear the blue dress +3 or the pink skirt +5 when tangoing with the BBEG.

I'm far less knowlegdeable in this area so this post is more along the lines of a polite suggestion.

Im thinking a "DM's Handbook - who to challenge optimized PC".

Especially concerning skill-checks and all the utility things out of combat, and the "min" part of "min/maxing".
Its just not always a breeze to challenge a party that can do just about everything to perfection.

I'd like to see a handbook not based on class, but rather on alignment. Such as a lawful handbook which states all the classes and prestige classes which require one te be lawful, feats that fit a lawful character and most importantly, a guide on how to act lawful. Too many people still regard lawful as 'following the law', but this isn't completely correct, as showed by the monk class. A guide on How to be chaotic could focus on avoiding the 'chaotic stupid' alignment and a neutral guide could explain that doing one chaotic and one lawful deed does not make you neutral.

I don't think that I'd be up to the task of writing a handbook myself but I would definitely be willing to do research for another's endeavor. If anyone is interested in the help PM me. I'm mostly interested in the barbarian or knight handbooks if anyone is writing them but would be willing to help with almost anything. I have practically NO experience with psionics so I'm probably not the best person to help with anything along those lines.
