Help building an Eberron/Core only Character

My GM has recently passed a rule that all future characters in his game must be made with ONLY the three core books and the Eberron books. We will be restarting the game soon with third level characters, and my husband is afraid he won't have any fun because he doesn't know Eberron well enough to build a good character. Could someone help me build him a good character that can be fun to play?

He is leaning toward the Artificer, but prefers to play sorcerers. We don't need to worry about stats, our GM gives us pretty high ones. We usually have at least one 18. My husband doesn't like most of the core prestige classes, but most of the Eberron classes seem sub par. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Well artificers are all sorts of awesome, I'm sure there are numerous builds for them around the boards if you do a search for them.

With core+eberron only... there is always Druid20, which is strong and versatile as a summoner, tank, damage dealer, and/or utility spellcaster. Even without spell compendium they are still really good.

Instead of a sorc, try a Changeling Wizard(conjurer)/Recaster. 5 levels of Recaster will let you Maximize for free 5/day, Empower for free 5/day, gain Eshew Materials for free, Still or Silent for free 5/day. It also has a variety of quicken 5/day that reduces the duration of the spell to 1 turn, but has some uses.

What is the desired role for the character? What does he want to be able to do? Also... does your GM consider PHBII and DMGII to be core books?

No, My GM does not consider them core books, nor does he consider the Psionic Handbook to be a core.

We're looking for a spell DPS caster, I have the buff/debuff/heals covered. He wants to be able to dish out a good amount of damage to target creatures without having to worry about hitting party members. I think the Recaster is a good idea.

casters + damage aren't that great. Battlefield control is where its at.

I'd agree with that in an instant, casters are best at buffs, debuffs, and battlefield control. However, my husband is very stubborn. I think I have a good idea of what he can do now, though. The Recaster is looking to be a good class to have him play, with the right feats. I'm not very familiar with Eberron, and when I skimmed the PRC's I overlooked it because of the lost caster level. Thank you for your help, I think I can take it from here.

Yep, Recaster is excellent for damage with it's maximize and empowers for free. Be sure to grab a Rod of Sculpt (lesser is fine at lower levels) which is pretty cheap and can be used to both hits lots of extra enemies, and avoid your party members with area spells.

Also keep in mind that recaster gets some social skills (bluff, sense motive etc) which can help round out a caster concept that doesn't revolve around knowledge skills only
