| #1vladtheladMar 21, 2008 10:27:53 | Ok we are starting a campaign and I am gonna be the partys cleric. I have checked out the handy links thread for clerics advice, but the info is so huge I need I bit of help. I can use all the books except the setting specific ones. So no ebberon (prestige class with zillion domains) or FR. In the setting there is only one god, with many saints so I can combine any domains I like, provided I present them to my Dm the appropriate fluff. Oh and I won't be able to take evil domains like undeath. I am getting 80 "pure" points for stats and I am thinking of going str 12 dex 10 con 16 wis 18 int 10 cha 14 I will certainly go the extend, persistent, divine metamagic route. For know i am thinking Human 10 cleric/6 contemplative/4 cleric Domains: Travel, Planning, 1st contemplative(Luck), 2nd(Time?) Feats: 1st Extend spell (Planning), Persistent spell, Divine metamagic Persistent 3rd Extra turn undead 6th ?? 9th ?? 12th Extra turn undead 15th Quicken spell 18th ?? Maybe I will also fit zen archery there somewhere, but I have to invest 4 feats in it and dex 13... Another option is Radiant servant of Pelor, but I will be forced to choose only from Pelors domains, so no travel, luck and planning.... I am really looking forward to your suggestions about feats and domains. PS. The rest of the party will be 2 fighters and one sorcerer... |
| #2CantripNMar 21, 2008 10:32:25 | Why not take Divine Magician (CM), Spontaneous Domain Casting (PHB2) (Time? Travel?) and Spontaneous Restoration (Dungeonscape)? Another fun Domain to consider is Limbo. |
| #3w00tmanxMar 21, 2008 10:36:17 | Curious... why not finish out contemplative? It gives you some nice abilities and you don't really get ANYthing from progressing as a cleric. Take any ammount of extra turning that you can fit in. Are you familiar with the tactics that DMM: *****s use? You also want to consider going with cloistered cleric. They are just better than regular clerics. Also, think about Seeker of the Misty Isle. So your progression would be Cloistered Cleric 6/Seeker 4/Contemplative 10. Seeker gives you Travel domain for free (always nice) and 4 levels of caster progression. Depending on how you want to go, my domain choices would be: Planning, Luck, Protection, Travel [free], Time and Knowledge [free]. Planning gives you extend, Luck gives you reroll, Protection gives you something good and let's you cast Mind Blank (uber!), Travel is just delicious, so is time, and knowledge is an add on. Also, you get identify on your spell list with no material component (free ID anyone?) |
| #4vladtheladMar 21, 2008 11:22:20 | I don't want to finish contemplative cause of the hit to BAB and fort saves. Even the 6 levels loose me 2 Bab and 1 fort. I should have said that, but I don't think I will be able to play an elf. So no seeker of the misty isle. I will try to convince my dm to let me play a cloistered cleric. Wootmax if I go 14 cloistered cleric/ 6 contemplative which 4 domains do you think I should choose? I am thinking travel, planning and luck are ok and the only real question is between protection and time.... Oh and the 3rd level was supposed to have extra turn undead.` |
| #5vladtheladMar 21, 2008 11:24:41 | Are you familiar with the tactics that DMM: *****s use? Um what does DMM stand for? ![]() |
| #6WyvernhandMar 21, 2008 11:29:40 | Divine MetaMagic...you specified that you wanted to use it in your build. |
| #7w00tmanxMar 21, 2008 11:36:53 | I don't want to finish contemplative cause of the hit to BAB and fort saves. Even the 6 levels loose me 2 Bab and 1 fort. Dude... what do you need BAB for? You are using DMM[Cheese]. Divine Metamagic [Persist Spell] will let you persist DIVINE POWER for a mere 7 turning attempts. That means you get BAB = your HD for 24 hours a day. Use extend on that biatch to get it for 2 days. For another 7 turning attempts, you get RIGHTEOUS MIGHT. I don't think you understand how little you get from staying in cleric. As for seeker, it specifically states in the text of the class that palyers should work with their DMs to customize it for their own campaigns. See my previous post about the domains you should get. What kind of armor do you plan on using? |
| #8aftercrescentMar 21, 2008 13:12:39 | Cleric 6/KotR 4/Contemplative 6/Divine Oracle 4 You'll get improved uncanny dodge. Evasion that works in your heavy armor. BAB isn't a worry because you can persist Divine Power. Also, Superior Resistance from Spell Compendium will cover your saves for 24 hours. The only iffy class is Knight of the Raven from Expedition to Ravenloft. It's a great class and will really help you in combat, but your DM might think it's ravenloft specific. It is so easily adapted though, don't let him fool you. :P If you go human, you can get away without the planning domain and just take extra turning and persist at first level. For domains - start with Travel and Time, pick up luck later. Trickery is a better domain than protection, so go with that. |
| #9vladtheladMar 21, 2008 17:55:29 | Divine MetaMagic...you specified that you wanted to use it in your build. Yeah just didn't know what DMM stood for... Wootmanx: Regarding the armor if I go cloisted cleric, chain mail or if I can have it some kind of mithral medium armor. aftercrescent: I like divine oracle. Might go Cleric6/Divine Oracle4/Contemplative 6 (:P Wootmanx)/Cleric 4 I am loosing 2 fortitude but gaining tons of abilities. |
| #10bluedsteelMar 21, 2008 21:31:38 | Just don't forget to make it cloistered cleric. Soooo much better... |
| #11w00tmanxMar 22, 2008 9:05:24 | Yeah just didn't know what DMM stood for... You can tease me about it all you want, but you are getting NOTHING good from cleric +4. With contemplative you become an outsider, you get all the cool monk abilities like perfect self and diamond soul etc. You also get to heal yourself better. With cleric... you get SLIGHTLY better save progression. Big deal. Saves should not be a problem for you. Get a headband of conscious effort and keep moment of prescience up. You are immune to things that target your saves. Even from rolling ones because of pride/luck. This is my last ditch effort on giving advice because I know what I'm doing and you obviously have reasons to not listen. |
| #12The_Orange_PetMar 22, 2008 10:28:15 | Divine Oracle is yucky unless you can pick up that feat pre-req as a bonus somewhere. Just not worth it IMO. Church Inquisitor is a better choice. You can pick up the Inquisition domain as a bonus domain and sacrifice it to gain the Knowledge Devotion feat. Tack on the Collector of Stories skill trick and you just increased you Attack/Dmg numbers by making a skill check. Cleric4/CI6/Contemplative10 will get you some extra immunities from CI as well. |
| #13aftercrescentMar 22, 2008 15:12:20 | Church Inquisitor is nice, but some people don't like that lawful alignment. It kind of goes against domains like Trickery, which rock. It is a good class though, again, it depends on your DM since it actually has an organizational requirement. Still, I'd trade a feat for Evasion in armor. |
| #14orenmirMar 23, 2008 23:08:52 | Dude... what do you need BAB for? You are using DMM[Cheese]. Divine Metamagic [Persist Spell] will let you persist DIVINE POWER for a mere 7 turning attempts. That means you get BAB = your HD for 24 hours a day. Use extend on that biatch to get it for 2 days. You can't Extend a Persistent spell. Persistent supersedes Extend. Plus, you really don't need to -- DMM Persist is already enough cheese power. |
| #15w00tmanxMar 23, 2008 23:14:46 | You can't Extend a Persistent spell. Persistent supersedes Extend. Plus, you really don't need to -- DMM Persist is already enough cheese power. Why can't you extend a persisted spell? I don't remember the text for persistent spell. Does it say that you can't do that? |
| #16quickenedwishMar 23, 2008 23:37:56 | Why can't you extend a persisted spell? I don't remember the text for persistent spell. Does it say that you can't do that? I don't see why you couldn't. I have no idea what he means by "supersedes." |
| #17aftercrescentMar 24, 2008 1:59:59 | He means that extend is a pre-req for persist. It sounds like he is inferring that you can't use extend, because persist overlaps it. That's like saying you can't use cleave because great cleave (IT'S A TRAP!, I know) supercedes it. You can apply the effects in whichever order is most beneficial to you. I.E. you persist a spell for 24 hours and then extend it to 48 hours. It's perfectly sound, and a damn good idea. |
| #18ppaladin123Mar 24, 2008 3:53:35 | Church Inquisitor is nice, but some people don't like that lawful alignment. It kind of goes against domains like Trickery, which rock. Isn't garl glittergold LG but with the trickery domain? Gnome church inquisitor... |
| #19aftercrescentMar 24, 2008 5:15:39 | GG most definitely is NOT LG... He might be NG, but probably CG. Although if he is NG, I can imagine a LG cleric/church inquisitor/shadowcraft mage causing some kind of sketchiness :P |
| #20Dictum_MortuumMar 24, 2008 7:06:35 | I think that extend spell doesn't wok. That's because IIRC each metamagic applies on the base spell, not the modified spell by other metamagic feats. For example, if you empower and maximize a CL 10 fireball, you'll be doing 60 + 5d6 damage, not 90 damage. So, if you extend and persistent the same spell, you are making the normal spell's duration * 2 with extend and then making it last all day long with persistent. Vice versa, it's the same: You are making the spell last all day long with persistent and then applying extend, making the base spell's duration * 2, which is pointless, since it already lasts 24 hours. |
| #21lenchMar 24, 2008 7:22:54 | I dont think your right on that one Dictum.....If I understand it correct you apply the metamagic feats in the most beneficial way. So you get persist, 24h, extend 48h. -Lench |
| #22Dictum_MortuumMar 24, 2008 7:42:18 | Well i just looked the new FAQ and it says that if you use energy admixture and maximize on the same spell you deal max damage and max admixture damate. You may be correct. I still have doubts though. |
| #23lenchMar 24, 2008 8:34:35 | It adds so much cheese factor to DMM:Persist so I totally understand the doubts. With some rods of extend, you can double your persisted buffs.....14000gp for a rod of extend and a rod of extend(lesser). |
