A player from another website asked for help with a Fighter 20 build and CO is the first place I always think of for such things. Here's his request. I've referred him here to sign up as well.

I need a 20th lvl fighter build as a leader of a nation, any book is allowed and the stats are as follows. He is human btw ;0).

Score/Temp
STR: 24/ {+7}
DEX: 11/ {+0}
CON: 16/ {+3}
INT: 20/ {+5}
WIS: 11/ {+0}
CHA: 14/ {+2}

Could someone help me? Class is straight fighter all the way. I'm only good at building characters for the first oh I don't know 10 lvls, after that I'm not nearly as good XD. Any help would be appreciated!

Well, you might as well pick up Combat Expertise and a few related feats if you're going to have an Int of 20...

Don't expect to do too well in combat though. Your Str and Con are too low.

Oh, and be sure to pick up Leadership.

I'm not really good at specific builds (I tend to build my characters organically), but I do come-up with some useful ideas from time to time.

Heroes of Battle has some excellent resource material on this topic.

As for the build -- with this particular concept/idea, I might go something like this (in no particular order):
- mounted combat tree -- gives visibility to troops, and works well with charge (Spirited Charge a MUST)
- all the leadership feats (see HoB) -- cohort = banner-wielding warpriest -or- martial -or- bard
- endurance+steadfast determination
- improved toughness (gonna need the HP)
- max Ride, Dipl., SM, Bluff, Knowledge (history, nobility & royalty) -- will need Able Learner (SS)
- pick-up appropriate Command Aura (the 5 levels in Legendary Leader really would go a long way as well)

hopefully some of that helps.

Although this guyis mostly an archer, if you replace his longsword with a greatsword ... you basically have the character you asked for ...

Since you really should have leadership, drop the Draconic Vigor feat to make room for Leadership.

The character is playable in that role from level 1.

Hope this helps.

If you are looking for a more tyranical leader, look here -- just replace his Falchion sword with a greatsword, he already has leadership and extra followers ... (I include in that post how to make him nicer (more robin hood than bandit king))

Lastly, no matter which version you choose, work with the DM to get the appropriate Commander Aura (from heroes of battle)

It depends really. Leader of a nation really needs two feats and a high cha.

Leadership goes without saying. And Landlord gives you your castle. XD

Other than that, I think the rest of his feats and class substitutions should be aimed at keeping him alive and sane. Or having more resources and followers. If you're evil, is it possible to have both Leadership and Undead Leadership? Does mercantile background do anything other than increasing initial gold? (afb at the moment)
- A king who wades into battle with his sword is asking to get cut down by enemy archers. A ruler's job is to lead.

I recall a substitution for fighter that allowed you to take penalties to will saves and increase your AC. That would certainly be very nice. Combat Expertise can net some dodge AC by attacking air. (Good for dodging snipers)

Your cohort can have the bodyguard variant fighter (takes penalty to his AC to add bonus to yours, and someone else to hold a Tower Shield) or more usefully be a diviner.

Great replies so far, thanks! I'll pass along the info.

(It's a shame he's straight Fighter with all that INT. Some Swash would certainly go well and maybe some Carmendine Monk. Oh well.)
