| #1lebbiJul 23, 2010 16:10:26 | I'm making a character for an epic level dungeon crawl with these spesifications: 42 point buy, 290k xp and 1.8 million gp starting wealth Now my idea is to have ninth level arcane casting, possibly more. So far I have become a necropolitan war troll, at this point I have my mental stats, the war trolls regenaration/acid and immunity to non-lethal damage and many other things (undead subtype) but what I need to make this really viable is immunity to acid, preferably also immunity to polymorph and high spell resistance in general. My ultimate design is to be immune to everything in an anti magic field while retaining full casting. Help please! P.S. I plan to become a war troll via shapechange and then make it permanent via polymorph any object, and performing the ritual to become a necropolitan after the change has occured so there is no need to account for war troll LA.P.P.S. My DM has banned shapechanging into templated creatures. However adding templates after the shapechange is not an issue. |
| #2Maat_MonsJul 23, 2010 18:09:55 | Let me give you a quote from the Monster Manual. Regeneration Additionally, a permanent polymorph any object would still be suppressed in an antimagic field. Only instantaneous spells can produce effects that can persist in an antimagic field. |
| #3Maat_MonsJul 23, 2010 21:59:22 | Here's an idea for an “invulnerable” character. Psion uncarnate (Expanded Psionics Handbook) level 10 makes you naturally incorporeal. Incorporeal creatures are immune to non-magical attacks (except from other incorporeal creatures and alchemical ghostblight capsules). The Epic Level Handbook says that psionic characters should generally be allowed direct analogs to most of the epic feats for magic. I will assume here that an analog for permanent emanation (Epic Level Handbook) is allowed. This feat can give you a permanent null psionic field (equivalent to an antimagic field) that you can dismiss and restart as a free action. When the null psionic field is up, you are immune to magical attacks (except instantaneous conjurations). If you want to manifest a power, you can dismiss the field as a free action, manifest the power, and restart the field as a free action. Only someone with a readied action will have the chance to get an attack in. You can take the ghostly grasp feat (Libris Mortis) to be able to manipulate corporeal objects dispite being incorporeal. Feats are extraordinary unless otherwise note, so this should still work in the null psionic field. You could try ardent (Complete Psionic) 11 / soulknife (Expanded Psionics Handbook) 2 / soulbow (Complete Psionic) 1 / psion uncarnate 10. That gets you manifesting as a 17th level ardent (wis based, 9th level powers), the incorporeal subtype, and the ability to make iterative ranged attacks that deal 1d8+wis damage and explicitly function in a null psionic field. This allows you to attack fairly well without dismissing the null psionic field, in case an opponent starts readying actions. You have to make a DC 20 will save each round you wish to use mind arrows in a null psionic field, which should be in the “don't roll a 1” range for you. You can take zen archery (Complete Warrior) to use wis instead of dex for ranged attack rolls. You can take vow of povery for relatively minor benefits, but if you are going to spend all your time in an antimagic field, it might be good. It does get you a +8 enhancement bonus as an extraordinary ability. As usual, you'll want to spend your money on a +5 inherent bonus before taking vow of poverty. It should be noted that epic spells have a chance to penetrate an antimagic field. This does not apply to spells of 10th level or higher, only true epic spells. Epic spells can get really crazy though, so some DMs ban them or don't give them to NPCs. You could get lucky in that regard. |
| #4lebbiJul 24, 2010 7:44:56 | I see your point with the constitution score, but I asked the DM and he allowed that the effect of polymorph made permanent would not be dispelled as conjured water does not disappear. So I'd really much like to pursue the regeneration and find an alternate way to gain ability damage immunity and immunity to damage, perhaps Warforged Juggernaut 2 to become immune to non-lethal? That just leaves immunity to acid to become immune to damage and a way to become immune to ability damage. |
| #5Maat_MonsJul 24, 2010 15:36:03 | Conjured water does not disappear because the spell that conjured it is instantaneous. Let me give you another quote form the PHB. Instantaneous Instantaneous and permanent durations both mean the effects of the spell can last forever. Wall of stone is instantaneous, so the wall stays in place forever unless something happens to it. Wall of fire can be made permanent, in which case the wall stays in place forever unless something happens to it. The entire purpose of having both instantaneous and permanent durations is because the two have different interactions to certain forms of magic. For example, a permanent wall of fire can be dispelled, but a wall of stone cannot be. In short, the claim that conjured water and permanent polymorph should have the same interactions with magic is erroneous because the two are in different categories expressly noted to have different interactions with magic. |
| #6lebbiJul 24, 2010 15:50:55 | Doesn't matter. The DM made this call so we can concider it a house rule. |
| #7Maat_MonsJul 24, 2010 19:18:06 | Does this house rule also make other permanent spells function in an antimagic field? Does this house rule make permanent spells immune to dispelling? Does this house rule make other permanent supernatural effects (e.g. magic items) function in an antimagic field? The pale master prestige class (Libris Mortis) gives you immunity to ability drain, critical hits, death effects, disease, energy drain, nonlethal damage, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, stunning, and damage to your physical ability scores. You need to take all 10 levels of the class for that, but it also gives you 9 levels of arcane casting. The elemental savant prestige class (Complete Arcane) gives you immunity to acid damage, critical hits, paralysis, poison, sleep effects, and stunning. It also makes it so you no longer need to breathe, eat, or sleep and gives you earth glide as an extraordinary ability. You need to take all 10 levels of the class for that, but it also gives you 8 levels of arcane casting. Well, that would require level 25, but you get immunity to disease, nonlethal damage, and stunning at level 7 of pale master. You could just wait a level for immunity to ability drain, death effects, disease, energy drain, and damage to your physical ablity scores. The proof against transmutation armor property (Complete Arcane) is +5 and makes you “impervious to any transmutation effect that would alter [your] form.” This is noted to include polymorph, petrification, and being turned to dust by a disintegrate spell (but not the damage). It's not as fool-proof as a class or racial ability, but it's the best I've got so far. High spell resistance is hard for a player character to get. I can't think of anything for that. You might still want to take permanent emanation (antimagic field). |
| #8daniel678Jul 24, 2010 21:35:35 | I would like to point out that there is a precident for undead creatures having regeneration. One example that I can think of off the top of my head is the Atropal from the ELH. |
| #9lebbiJul 24, 2010 23:00:19 | Well after a lengthy discussion with my DM he concluded that if I were to use Shapechange to change into a War Troll I would indeed retain my int score but if I were to make it permanent by using Polymorph any object to change into myself I would infact just be polymorphing into a War Troll and thus not retain my original int score. I tried explaning to him that having shapechanged into a War Troll "myself" would be a War Troll with way higher int, thus using Polymorph any object to change myself into myself (thus making the duration permanent) I would not be changing into a regular War Troll but the improved War Troll that was "myself" but to no avail. I think this works because in the description for Alter Self it destinctly says:You can change into a member of your own kind or even into yourself. Now I would like to ask your opinions on the matter in hopes that I could persuade him. P.S. the "house rule" only applies to this specific instance: a permanent polymorph not being dispelled in an antimagic field. |
| #10Maat_MonsJul 24, 2010 23:58:26 | I would like to point out that there is a precident for undead creatures having regeneration. One example that I can think of off the top of my head is the Atropal from the ELH. That's because the Epic Level Hand book is 3.0 and creatures without con scores were allowed to have regeneration in 3.0. Well after a lengthy discussion with my DM he concluded that if I were to use Shapechange to change into a War Troll I would indeed retain my int score but if I were to make it permanent by using Polymorph any object to change into myself I would infact just be polymorphing into a War Troll and thus not retain my original int score. I agree with your DM. Never fear though. There is an alternative. You can use true mind switch from the psionic equivalent of a scroll with the psionic equivalent of the use magic device skill. You just need to cast dominate monster on a war troll and tell it to fail its save against true mind switch. I suggest you make the switch at 17th level and kill your old body. You'll lose a level, but losing a level at 17th level only puts you down 8,000 XP. I've put together a list of things you probably want to be immune to. Ability damage (PM 10, physical only) The dream domain granted power makes you immune to fear. Complete Champion has an alternate class feature for wizard that allows you to trade any wizard bonus feat except scribe scroll for a domain granted power. Alternately, there is a regional feat in Player's Guide to Faerun called fearless that makes you immune to all fear effects. Dragonmarked (an Ebberon book) has a dragonmark called mark of the dauntless that makes you immune to dazing and stunning. This requires 2 feats. My research into immunity to mind-affecting effects is not promising. There appears to be a feat in Elder Evils that requires you to be evil. There's occult slayer 5 and warforged juggernaut 3. I have reservations about warforged juggernaut though. If you cease to qualify for a prestige class, you cease to gain its benefits. Since warforged juggernaut requires you to be a warforged, I think you would cease to gain the benefits when you turn yourself into a wartroll. I think mind-affecting effects is another case where you have to rely on an item. A third eye conceal makes you immune to mind-affecting effects and most forms of divination. You could also cast mind blank, but that's easier for enemies to get rid of. |
| #11lebbiJul 25, 2010 7:51:03 | ok but why not do the mind-switch at level 24? Also I just had the Crazy Idea to be a Charisma caster (sorcerer) to be able to just use shapechange and the Polymorph any object to permanize it, thus gaining the Regeneration ability, and retaining my full casting. Any thoughts? I still like the mind-switch a hwole lot because, if I understand you correctly it's not a spell and thus can't be dispelled. |
| #12lebbiJul 25, 2010 7:56:38 | Oh and by the way the DM is almost definetly going to be using Mordenkainen’s Disjunction a lot so magic items should be kept to a minimum and they should be as cheap as possible... |
| #13lebbiJul 25, 2010 12:25:43 | Oh and another Idea, instead of killing my original body why not just banish it to the astral plane to wander there for eternity? (but still technically alive) |
| #14lebbiJul 25, 2010 20:49:48 | ok I've been talking with my DM and I'm going to be a wizard 5/Pale master 10/Elemental savant 9. I'm going to turn into the troll at 24th level and banish my old body to the astral plane, I've fixed myself up with all the immunities on that list except daze immunity but polymorph and petrification come from a magic item so that can be dispelled, do you know any way to get immunity to daze, polymorph and petrification that would work in an antimagic field and not subject to Mordenkainen’s Disjunction? everything else i've got is either a psionic item (third eye conceal) or extraordinary/class abilities or feats (everything else). DM won't allow dragonmarks. |
| #15Maat_MonsJul 25, 2010 21:16:17 | If you expect your original body to die, you should get it out of the way as soon as possible because the amount of XP you lose by losing a level is less the lower the level is. If you feel you can keep your original body alive, any level is fine. Come to think of it, proper application of imprisonment might work pretty well. True mind switch cannot be dispelled, disjoined or suppressed. This is not because it is a psionic power. Psionic powers (and items) may or may not be subject to those things; the psionic rules give the DM a choice on how magic and psionics interact. The reason is that true mind switch is instantaneous. This means that the magic only exists during the process of switching minds. Once you have switched, magic is not necessary to maintain it, so there is no magic to dispel, disjoin, or suppress. I've got an idea for magic immunity, but you'll want to check it with your DM. You cast dominate monster on a war troll in preparation for true mind switch. Monster Manual II has a ritual you can perform to turn a creature into a half-golem. This gives it magic immunity as a golem of the selected type, but does not remove its con score or give it construct traits if it succeeds on a will save. You perform this ritual on the war troll. The fact that it now has immunity to magic does not prevent spells currently active on it from working normally. In fact, creatures with spell immunity can lower their immunity for a round to accept spells, which then run their course normally. If your DM rules that immunity to magic can also be lowered voluntarily, you can use any sort of golem you like. (Immunity to magic is technically a different ability from spell immunity.) If so, just order the war troll to lower his immunity to magic before you mind switch with it. Otherwise, you can use a clay golem as the base. Their spell immunity can be suppressed temporarily by a stone to flesh spell. When the ritual to turn a creature into a half-golem is performed, the creature's int and cha both decrease by 6. Mind switching into the body after the ritual should spare you the decrease. |
| #16wings_of_peaceJul 26, 2010 2:35:33 | You are working way too hard for damage immunity my friend. Just play a Warforged and persist both Construct Essence and Monstrous Regeneration. With your Epic WBL just buy elemental rituals from Savage Species to cover the remaining damage types or if those are unavailable use a few more spells. Simple. Magic Immunity? Epic Spells or if you really want just dip four levels of Cleric for Initiate of Mystra. Yeah it's messy, but Permanent Emanation: Anti-Magic Field can make life pretty good. Depending on how your DM reads the rules in Dragon Magic for qualifying as a Cleric you could probably take levels in Mystic Theurge (via early entry cheats on the divine side of course) to cover up some of the caster level loss and count those levels as Cleric levels. If not, Cest la Vie. Beyond that most things can be covered painlessly with spells. Astral Projection + Genesis for example means that if you do somehow die, it isn't really you anyways. And then if the real you does die somehow? Prep a Clone spell. |
| #17lebbiJul 26, 2010 5:16:45 | Great idea Maat. A few things have changed, I will no longer be taking the Elemental savant prestige class for I have gained all the immunities it offered through wish/miracle allowed by my DM, except immunity to flanking which I think will be ok. So now I have 9 levels i can assign at will and was hoping that those levels could be used to gain immunity to ability damage and/or negative levels. Any thoughts? I have yet to gain immunity to polymorphing and petrification that would work in an antimagic field and I am also not immune to dazing. |
| #18lebbiJul 26, 2010 6:22:28 | Beyond that most things can be covered painlessly with spells. Astral Projection + Genesis for example means that if you do somehow die, it isn't really you anyways. And then if the real you does die somehow? Prep a Clone spell. Yeah but the funny thing is that my DM knows this and therefore he will use Mordenkainen’s Disjunction and anti magic field a lot! You see he's actually out to get us in this one. |
| #19lebbiJul 27, 2010 20:08:12 | Now there is one day untill we play, and I'm effectively immune to just about everything. However, my DM suggested that my golem parts might stop working at some point, due to the story of the campaign that magic is failing, what can i do to retain my spell immunity if that were to happen? |
| #20aelryinthJul 27, 2010 20:48:20 | Ah, you want to keep one elemental vulnerability. If you are immune to dmg of all types for regeneration, then you lose the regeneration and just end up with fast healing. That's also a ruling. So the acidic half-red dragon troll just has fast healing, it has no regeneration at all. ==Aelryinth |
| #21lebbiJul 27, 2010 21:09:05 | Then how do you explane the Tarrasque having regeneration and no energy vulnerability? |
| #22Maat_MonsJul 28, 2010 5:21:27 | So now I have 9 levels i can assign at will and was hoping that those levels could be used to gain immunity to ability damage and/or negative levels. You're already immune to negative levels. That's what immunity to energy drain is. ...the Tarrasque... I wonder if your DM would let you mind switch with that. |
| #23lebbiJul 28, 2010 6:49:28 | I doubt it but it's worth a shot if my golem parts stop working ![]() |
| #24tytalusJul 28, 2010 16:28:09 | Ah, you want to keep one elemental vulnerability. If you are immune to dmg of all types for regeneration, then you lose the regeneration and just end up with fast healing. That's also a ruling. Where can that ruling be found? |
| #25aelryinthJul 28, 2010 18:46:30 | The tarrasque doesn't have any energy IMMUNITY....and the tarrasque is supposed to be unkillable except by one specific means. Obviously a special case, yes? You can stop it from regening...you just have to use a wish! The ruling on immunity/regen came from the sage. I think it was an attempt to stop the acidic half-red dragon necropolitan troll from wiping the game, or something. ==Aelryinth |
| #26lebbiJul 28, 2010 19:18:50 | Lol. As stated previously in this very thread, a necropolitan troll would not have any regeneration due to it's lack of a constitution. |
| #27scinoispJul 30, 2010 23:36:04 | How has no one suggested lich incase you some how do die, fun fact about lichs your not limited to one phylactery, they can make as many as they feel like. Also you can mind switch after being a lich, as phylacteries are bound to your soul not your body and presto, you come back from the dead as a lich without being undead and once you rack up the funds you can get a second phylactery. For the mind switch hire a psion (telepath) to mind switch with the troll then you, then imprison him when he asks for his pay. For your convinence the Lich templete is in the Monster Manual on pages 166-167. Don't ask why I have that memorized as you will not recieve an answer. |
