Hello guys i'm new (i know it's pretty obvious anyway i needed some sort of "introduction phrase" :D)
I spent 'bout 1h searchin tru the forum 4 topics that could help my subject but i wasn't able to find the right one so i will bother u with a new topic

Yesterday i was introduced in a group of Powerplayers and as u can imagine our DM had to boost all the enemies but the problem is that my bard isn't boosted enough to fit that kind of situation so i wondered u could help me find a way (my DM allowed me to change my character build for the next meeting)

ATM this is my PC:

Kobold 8th lvl: 6 bard/2jester (from the Mongoose publishing "Quintessential Bard" PrC)

CN

STR 12
DEX 18
CON 13
INT 16
WIS 10
CHA 16

HP 45

BAB +5

FORTITUDE 2
REFLEX 8
WILL 8

Feats:
DragonWrought (just to get Wings cuz they looked "fashion" :D)
wings
weaponfinesse rapier

99 ability points

A lot of "use-less in combat magical items"

Well he (my DM) said i can change my PrC, feats, abilities, spells, base stats and equipment to fit the group (drow wizard, drow druid, duergar warrior, human thief7/assassin1(well black-human cuz it looks cooler) oh and both the drows and the duergar doesn't have the +2 lvl modifier cuz the DM nerfed them a bit....)

Oh just in case the Jester PrC benefits are:

1st lvl: immune to all fear and confusion effects
2nd Lvl: It's not possible to detect his thoughts or read his emotions anyway.
This includes the Sense motive skill as well as magical spells like "detect thoughts" or "discern lies"
2nd lvl: i enrage my foes taking a full round action to lower their AC and attack rolls by 2 (originally it was "by my CHA modifier" but he decided it was too much...)

what would u guys suggest?

Ty in advance

LAST MINUTE EDIT:
wops i forgot to add that i can use almost all official books plus the "quintessential editions" by mongoose
(such as "the quintessential kobold" "the quintessential bard" and so on...)

I forgot also to mention that since they told me i was going to join them about 4h before introducing me i had no time to get detailed info 'bout the campaign setting...all i know is that is a low populated territory created by our DM with small towns and no king my BG is pretty stupid and small since i made it 1h before we started :D

to make it simple:
my PC is kobold bard who ran away from another region cuz of playing-debts...huge playing debts...he is the kind of idiot guy who wanders around with no purpose other than have fun....he enjoys using his new companion's duergar head as a divination sphere while he floats around him....he wears a JesterCap (oh really?? he is also a jester xD)
He left the kobold pit cuz he was too lazy for their work-straight-minded society.
And 4 now that's all...i planned to add smth later maybe....

well i'll bump this up with some new infos

my group is guardin a lich's phylactery and is bounded to it tru a death spell....the rogue was workin 4 a thief guild but now they discovered him (while he's still with them)...later they met my character in tavern.
The monster encounters vary a lot....

I had in mind 3 PC concepts:

1) completely 4 support (buff 'n healin)
2) something with Sublime Chord levels in it
3) a bit more damage based...

i would like smth that works with my STATS and with my race (the only thing i can't change is the race said the DM....oh and also the base bard class....)

Take the feat Dragonfire Inspiration. It replaces the +x hit/damage with a +xd6 bonus energy damage to all attacks by those you inspire. Get a Vest of Legends (MIC?) and a Badge of Valor (Hero's of Battle or MIC?) or 3. Cast Inspirational Boost (Spell Compendium) before you use bardsong. This will boost your bardsong up a fair bit, and then the Dragonfire Inspiration will be pretty pimped out. You should be at about +5 bardsong, so you grant all allies +5d6 damage to ALL HITS. This is the ultimate support that you can put out.

If you want to do some more support, get a +1 Sudden Stunning shortsword or other small slashing weapon. Then cast the 2nd level spell Whirling Blade. The DC for the save is based off your Cha, which you should raise as much as possible. This lets you stun foes from a distance so your allies can swarm and gang-beat them. Plus you get the +5d6 damage on all foes in the line, which is pretty neat.

The feat Subsonics will allow you to continuously have your bardsong running, and allow you to cast spells while singing and will give you some more versitility and quickness of action at the beginning of combats.

If you bought your stats with point buy, sac some of your int for cha. Cha is important for you, so max it.

Also, look into Snowflake Wardance from Frostburn. You gain +cha to hit while bardsinging. This couples really nice with Dragonfire Inspiration and Whirling Blade.

Ty Wyvernhand

so i'll change weaponfinesse to DragonFire inspiration
i'll ask for a change of armor too (ATM i have a mithral chainshirt +1)

but what do u think 'bout Jester PrC? should i keep it or change 4 example to Sublim Chord 2? (i could keep it and add Sublime chord PrC when i'll lvl up maybe....)
From a Out-of-combat point of view it's pretty useful the fact that ppl cannot detect when i lie and besides that fear and confusion immunity are quite good, that mass AC/attack roll debuff named jibe could be nice too...

the idea of the stunning blade seems pretty cool to me

what class u suggest me to take with level progression? i think the campaign will end about at lvl 18 (as soon as we'll get 4th edition :D)

i roll-ed the stats but the DM will allow me to change them a bit

(oh i forgot to say that everything Psion-related isn't allowed by my DM...just cuz he hadn't time to read that book so he doesn't know well how they work)

and what about a more "crowd-control version" ? the stunning blade it's good but what about smth else tru spell use? maybe using some Sublime chord lvls?

well now i will go back studying...tomorrow i'll have a Private Law exam

ty ppl cya :D

Just one thing: You don't need to be dragonwrought to get dragon wings. They're completely separate feats.

I know nothing about the Jester PrC. I've never seen it. Sublime Chord is just about the strongest bard prc in the game though. It gives you access to the wizard spell list from level 4 and up. This is really good.

If you want to go for more crowd control, look into the fog cloud line of spells. Starting from Solid Fog, you get the ability to completely remove foes from combat for 1-3 rounds depending on your foe's abilities. Upgrading from that is Freezing Fog, with a built-in Grease spell tacked onto it. You get all these from SC casting. They have no SR and no save, so it doesn't matter how good of a caster you are, your foe is still screwed for 1-3 rounds without Freedom of Movement running.

Also, Evards Black Tentacles is a great spell when you first get it. It remains strong for more than a few levels too. Eventually, however, it does fade off, but by then, you have bigger meaner spells (and it still does retain some usefulness, specifically vs medium sized humanoid types).

I would also take another look at your Stats. One of the biggest benefits of dragonwrought is you don't suffer aging penalties on your physical stats for being old. That means you can keep all your physical stats the same, but get a +3 to all your mental stats. Maybe go with something like this:

Str 14 (14) -4 Kobold =10
Dex 16 (18) +2 Kobold =18
Con 16 (18) -2 Kobold =14
Int 15 (16) +3 Age =18
Wis 9 ( 9) +3 Age =12
Cha 18 (24) +3 Age =21 +2 Level bonuses = 23

If you are in an underdark campaign, you might also want to consider the Gloria found in the underdark book. Now this would be a big change, but it is a fey race with 7 racial HD, 7 levels of bard spell casting, adds Cha to AC and saves, and has a LA of +2. If your DM is cutting LA down, this might make a good choice. Gloria 7, Bard 3, Sublime Cord 10.

they moved to tomorrow the exam...

thx dragao i just noticed it

Wyvernhand srry i haven't found Vest Of Legends on MIC nor Badge Of Valor
and where exactly i can find Sudden Stunning Blade?

Well Jester PrC does the following:
Hd: d6

Requirements:
Bluff 8
Diplomacy 8
Perform (comedy) 8
Sense motive 8

add also Listen to my class abilities

1st lvl: Immune to fear
1st lvl: immune to confusion

2nd Lvl: It's not possible to detect his thoughts or read his emotions anyway.
This includes the Sense motive skill as well as magical spells like "detect thoughts" or "discern lies"
2nd lvl: i enrage my foes taking a full round action to lower their AC and attack rolls by 2 (originally it was "by my CHA modifier" but he decided it was too much...)

oh thx widow i'll ask my DM if i can became a bit more old

so assuming now i'm bard6/jester2 from now on should i take only Sublime Chord lvls? like bard6/jester2/SublimeChord10 ? or what else? maybe we will stop at 16 or 18th lvl....

I'd drop the jester entirely and see if you can rework yourself. Bard 8/Sublime Chord 2/Virtuoso 10 is a pretty good build, and with your stats should be pretty powerful as well.

A lot of the CO boards stay away from 3rd party publishing material.

I'm now could u please explain me the reason? ('bout the 3rd party publishing)

just to know why u suggest only 2 lvls of Sublime Chord? i've seen some bard builds in the board and a lot of them have only 2 lvl of sublime Chord but i don't understand why : (i'm a newbie u have to understand me :D :D :D )

btw do u think is so useless the jester PrC? it has some nice skills imho (and that immunity to sense motive can be very interesting out-off-combat)

Does Jester advance bard casting?

Also, the reason you tend to only see 2 levels of SC in a lot of builds are because at level 2, you gain access to almost the entire wizard/sorc spell list. Then, after that, you take another prestige class that advances arcane spellcasting and have it advance your SC casting to keep the wizard/sorc spell list strong. The other features of SC are ok, but most people tend to move into something with a little better features, like Virtuoso or even something more magelike, like Archmage, Loremaster, Sacred Exorcist (for turn undead to fuel divine feats like Divine Spell Power or Divine Might).

If Jester keeps full casting, I'd keep it, go into Sublime Chord, then either stay with that, or jump out after 2 into Sacred Exorcist. If you can grab Power Attack somewhere in the build before level 12, you can get Divine Might at level 12 which allows you to spend turn attempts to add your Cha to damage. This is a little boost that is pretty nice, especially if you use the Whirling Blade tactic that I mentioned above.

3rd party materials tend to be frowned upon because oftentimes they seem to have little regard for game balance. They will typically either be WAY to powerful, or staggeringly underwhelming. Thus, most here on the CharOp forums tend to limit life to official WotC products, with only occasional mention of outside materials.

As far as Vest of Legends and Badge of Valor, I don't remember anymore. Badge of Valor is used after a bardsong is in place, and increases its + by 1. Vest of Legends does similar, but also has a couple other nice features attached. I'm sure someone else on the boards can add more details.

I know Sudden Stunning appears in Bunko's Bargain Basement (seach this site for "Bunko"). Its VERY nice.
EDIT: DMG II pg 261 (was curious myself)

1st of all a BIG THX for that bunko link u suggested me :D it's pretty interesting

2 jester lvl = 1 arcane caster caster level...i forgot to say that... actually with bard6/jester2 i could cast like a bard 7 but i was considering it also cuz it adds listen to my skills...

anyway i don't get why with just 2 lvl u get ALL the spells. i checked now and with lvl2 sublime chord u should get 2 4th lvl and 2 5th lvl spell...or i'm missing smth? prolly i just took a bad look at the manual anyway if u could explain i would be pleased ty

isn't sacred exorcist a good alignment class? i'm CN and most of my party is evil (2 drow and 1 duergar xD) plus i'm a kobold i don't know if my DM will allow it but anyway i'll take a look

i'm strongly considering the virtuoso addition u suggested me but i'll w8 a bit more since i have about 4 days before the next d&d session

Yeah, Caelic is an asset to this community. (consequently, about a 30ish page thread started when he went "missing" for a bit. The Bunko thread is an awesome resourse I've reference a few times myself.

As for the 2 levels of SC, when you take a full casting PrC that includes the phrase "+1 existing caster level", you apply it to the SC casting list instead of the bard casting list. That way, you keep advancing the SC casting (which is better than bards) but get a different set of clase features to go with it, which is generally considered better.

Also, yes, Sacred Exorcist requires a good character. It wouldn't be hard to take it as an anti-outsider class (since it normally targets undead OR outsiders) and then reflavoring all of the good abilities to chaotic and be devoted to hunting lawful outsiders (Devils and Archons for evil and good respectively). A bit less powerful, but not much, and still nets you the turn undead feature so you can take divine feats. Most divine feats are pretty balanced as far as play goes, so he shouldn't have a problem with this being your primary motivation to do this.

Requires a bit of DM approval, but not an unreasonable demand.

oh yeah now i got it :D

well iono how i could change smth like turning undead for a chaotic alignment......anyway could be a solution the chameleon PrC from "Races of Destiny" ? i know should be just 4 humans and doppleganger but maybe my DM will allow it also 4 a kobold....

oh and i was also wondering if i could shape this bard a bit like the treanmonks wizard god (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=956548) well obviously it won't be the same but would be a good idea to take same spells that build takes?

I've seen a very interesting Bard build on these boards that takes a level of War Weaver before going Sublime Chord. Then finishes up War Weaver after the first SC level. (War Weaver is Heroes of Battle, I think)

Also, getting in a level of Sand Shaper (Sandstorm) before going SC is pretty good. It'll add a lot of spells to your spells known lists -both SC and Bard.

Or you could take a level of Malconvoker (Complete Scoundrel)before SC, filling in the levels with Malconvoker after.

All of these require taking the first level before SC, as the first level does not advance spellcasting. And they are caster-heavy solutions. There may be good melee-fixes out here as well.

I have built a somewhat interesting Dragonwrought Kobold, but still somewhat unsure if it's not surely gimped. But hey, until I play him a bit, only two sessions won't know.

Shadow Template (for Shadow Dragon Spawn RP) +1 LA (gains Evaison, and other)
Bard 3, Druid 3, Green Whisperer 4, Sublime Chord 2, Folchan Lyrist 8 (+1 LA Buyback)

The +3 Mental Stats(INT, WIS, CHR) help with from the Dragonwrought and caster classes.

The skills are a bit tight at low levels, but in a level or two I should be able to go wild (currently at 11th level).

GW is from Dragon 311 and is a Druid/Bard progression PrC.

The problem with Bards is that they don't really fill a designated role within a party, but seem to dip within all of them: they can kind of fight, kind of sneak, kind of cast spells and kind of heal. However, they can't do anything stellar.

I think that, for its class features, the Archivist is what the Bard should have been. However, if you are set on making your bard a God, Sublime Chord gives you the spell list to do it with. Being a God is more about the spells you chose rather than the build you go, but the builds often capitalize on aspects of those spells (archmage to make spells different shapes, Fatespinner to boost DCs).

If you really REALLY want to be a god, scrap the bard entirely and go Wizard, make your Kobold 100 billion X10 years old, get the aging penalties, be a focused Conjurer or Transmuter and familiarize yourself with the spells. Bards are OK at everything, but if you want to be like a wizard, wizards do it best*.

*except, IMO, for archivists

k i've decided:
i'll make bard6/virtuoso1/xx3/sublime chord2/virtuoso +9

xx3 = i don't know what class i should take as 10th lvl class.... cuz to qualify as a sublime chord i need 13 ranks in listen (max rank=10+3 so i need at least to reach 10th lvl right?) and if i take 6 lvl of bard and 1 of virtuoso i will still have to w8 3 lvls before going into sublime chord...what could i take in the while?

war weaver seemed nice but it requires 1 talent and atm i don't want to give up any of the talents i've already chosen...

maybe i should take more bard lvls? like bard9 /virtuoso1 and then i will splash in the sublime chord....else i could take bard7/jester2/virtuoso1...but iono...in this way i'll loose 2 lvl of caster progression (1 4 virtuoso and 1 4 jester) and also 2 lvls of bardic music....

i searched a bit in this forum for MAlconvoker and in the malconvoker's handbook they said is a bad choice for a Bard....

If u could suggest me a nice Chaotic neutral conversion of the Sacred Exorcist i would consider it

btw ty ppl i'm really appreciating ur help

Yeah, as RabidPirateMan states, it's heavy into spell casting and no true focus. What I tried to do different with mine, and I guess, why I say it may be a little gimped, is playing him as type of "Skitter"

I have an Ancestral Relic, which I have the Psionic Compression power on it, (because Shrink is Human and I'm a Dragon).

So with my powers I have Entice Gift, after I run up onto the target, I can also use "Entice Gift" if I see a nice weapon the BBEG's are using, and if I get it, use "Weapon Shift" to shift it into something I can use. It also brings them (the BBEG) to me so my companions can get a whack or two at them. But again, only played a few sessions with him so far, so still seeing.

There's one that gives -1 to AC, which is minor.

Also, if your DM allows it, Prestige Bard from UA is essentially bard on steroids.

You don't start as a bard for it, you start as say: Sorcerer. Then you get sorcerer casting through the class, which is in many ways superior to bard casting. Then you pwn.

Eh, Prestige Bard isn't that great- you want full casting progression.

I'd go with Bard 8/Virtuoso 1, then take two levels of Sublime Chord and finish of Virtuoso. Strong, nice build.

If you haven't started yet, though... You COULD play a wizard, since being a god is what you want. However, Bards are a nice addition to the team nonetheless.

well no "being a god" was just smth came in my mind after ppl here suggested me SC to get a full caster progression...but anyway as u stated in that case would be better playing as a real wizard....

so now i will focus on a supporting/buffer

u said bard8/virtuoso 1 ? so there's still 1 empty lvl before 10th.... i can take SC only after 10th lvl or am i wrong?

anyway prolly u're right taking only 2 classes (bard, virtuoso,SC) the build will be more simple and easier to justify

EDIT:

do u have any idea of spells i should take lvl by lvl ? (i have some vague concepts but i'm sure u ppl have better ideas :D)

With Sublime Chord after, the difference between Sorcerer and Bard becomes smaller. I don't know the Virtuoso well, so I can't comment. War Weaver is good for buffs and cure spells.

Combat Medic eventually should give you the ability to drop Heal into the weave.

I'd look into the possibility of squeezing in a Sand Shaper level before SC. Lots of extra spells.

u're right that will grant a lot of spell (versatility) but doesn't permit to advance in bardic music that's why i thought virtuoso would be better (even if the extra spells and extra skills from sandshaper, i must admit, are really tempting :D)

what do u think about taking dragon familiar feat? (that would cost me 2 feats....and i plan to take also dragonwrought, dragonfire inspiration and maybe snowflake...i'm considering also the feat that allows u to cast spells while using bardic music...well and maybe also the "wing" feat :D)

Subsonics is an amazing feat. It allows you to keep bard song up at all times so you get the benefit of it from the very start of combat. I'd take it if I was you. I wouldn't take Dragon Familiar though. Like you said, its 2 feats to get, and is not very strong on its own and likely to get killed. Dragon Wings are ok, but you can probably find better things to do with your feats, especially since it sounds like you will be underground and not able to maneuver well (you get poor - average maneuverability, so you can't hover or wingover, meaning you need enough room to circle or you fall, which you generally don't have underground.

Maybe see if you can take a Draconic Aura to get the vigor aura. It'll help your party regen between combats that's pretty useful.

It'll help your party regen between combats that's pretty useful.

u're right as always :D

btw i found an interesting build in the forum:

Mindbender is kind of fun with bard since if you have telepathy, you can sing songs IN SOMEONES HEAD! Ever have a song stuck in your head? This is that, only 10x as loud. It also is completely silent to anyone who your not broadcasting too, so you can maintain bardsong even while sneaking.

I'd stay away from Ur-Priest though. Most DMs are gonna nix it, because its so retardedly powerful. Especially when you combine it with a duel-casting PrC like Mystic Theurge. Resist the cheese!

Although it does give you rebuke undead attempts you can spend for Divine Might....hmmmm

Ur-Priest has some pretty difficult prereqs. Mindbender is often used to meet them.

Deekin is the loveable little kobald bard/red dragon disciple from the 1st and 2nd expansion packs for Neverwinter Nights, a computer RPG based on the D&D 3.0 system. I beat the game the first time with no cohorts, but had to play through it again just to hear the Deekin commentary. Always spoke in 3rd person, an absolute riot.

well anyway i have a doubt (yes another 1 srry ) : if my DM accepts that ur-SCTheurge build i will need to boost my WIS too ? or MT allows me to use only CHA modifier?
(newbie question i know but i had to ask )

u're right that will grant a lot of spell (versatility) but doesn't permit to advance in bardic music that's why i thought virtuoso would be better (even if the extra spells and extra skills from sandshaper, i must admit, are really tempting :D)

You only need one level (a "dip") to get all the spells from Sand Shaper. They will keep coming even as you level up in other classes. That is the good bit about them. When you get your first Sublime Chord level, you get to add all the Sand Shaper 4th level known to your spells known immediatly

You will need wis too, because that is the primary casting stat of the Ur-Priest.

Folyrican Lyrist is much better than MT in this case, full bab for 8 level should help recover some of your abilities.

But how to qualify? It requires Druidic, doesn't it?

drop that last level of bard? One level of druid gets you a whole new spelllist. Or you could cheese it and have someone teach you it.

Naw, I don't like the Druid idea; then it'd just be better to change the entire build.

I love Ur-Priest builds. However, their power is in the fact that they gain spellcasting quicker than any other class out there. You want to find a way to qualify for Ur-Priest as soon as possible. I think you can do that my Bard 5, so try to shoot it from there.

Mindbender is good with a feat from Lords of Madness- Mindsight. If gives you the ability to 'see' everything that thinks within your field of telepathy (in your case, 100 feet). You'll never be caught by surprise again. However, the class has steep requirements for just one feat. Take it later (maybe at 9th or 12th so you can take the feat the same level).

The druid is a one level dip, thats it, you would be using FL to advance ur and sublime spells, continue bardic progression, and get full BAB while doing it.

Nothing Divine Metamagic Persistant Divine Power can't fix.

I agree that you are better off getting into Ur-Priest ASAP and advancing it as fast as you can.

I understand what u mean but before adancing in MT progression i need to qualify as a SC so i will advance in both SC and ur-priest... do u think i should take MT before going into SC?

u want me to take mindbinder prc later? but so how can i qualify myself to become ur-priest? (i'm newbie u have to use easy concepts with me eheheh )

btw what do u ppl think 'bout STATS? i should keep the 1st or the 2nd version? and the feat i selected? how they are? should i change anything else?

All of those stats have way too little Constitution. Aim for at least 14 if possible, dropping from Dex or Str. I'd go with 8/14/14/16/20/20 dumping levelup points into Cha if you're buying them point-for-point. If you use a point buy or rolls, it's a different matter. Still, I'd switch Dex and Con (which should leave you with 14/14 after racial adjustments anyways).

The difference between Con and Dex is that Con scales with level, Dex doesn't. Even at level 8, things you fight that are designed to hit you, will hit you. This will continue for most of the duration of your career. The best ways to not die include more evasive tactics, employing miss chance, mobility, cover, and whatnot. HP will keep you alive for the times when you do get hit.

This is my experience from high level play (8+), and YMMV.
