| #1katashApr 18, 2008 19:39:11 | Hello, after much attempting to make a Warmage with enough of an expanded spell list to be God I've given up, mainly because I couldn't get my favorites in there. Persused boards and come up with another possibility. Spontaneous casting of a biggish (for a socerer) spellist is what I'm after. Don't have races of stone so shadowcraft mage is out (i hate gnomes) I figure a decent god would be- (spells focus on B/C, Blast and Save or Die) Metamagic Specialist variant Sorcerer What Prc's will be the most powerful to add here?I won't sacrifice CL because sorcerer's get so few spells known- I'm thinking Incantritix or IOSV or Sand Shaper but may not have the feats left I WILL NOT LOSE MORE THAN 1 CL Considerations- Char is Human, 2 flaws allowed. Mother cyst and Penumbra Bloodline will be taken a 1st level along with Arcane Disciple in the build- Trickery Domain (these are not negotiable) that leaves 1 more 1st level feat and the rest of the feat tree. Ability scores at 1st level- STR 10 Dex 14 Con 12 Int 12 Wis 16 Cha 18 This class won't have spontaneous casting of a HUGE spellist (Shadowcraft mage does- don't have that book before anybody mentions it) BUT It will have 1. 9th level spells 2. Great Defensive wards (IOSV) 3. Some of the best spells 4. Metamagic Skills (if Sand Shaper or Incantritix) Spells Known- Feat spells Mother Cyst and Penumbra Bloodline in Red, Possible spells from Limbo Domain in Green 1-Benign Transposition (SpC), Grease (PHB), Karmic Aura (CM), Shield, Kelgore's Firebolt,Obscuring Mist, Necrotic Awareness, Disguise Self 2-Web, Ray of Stupidity, Alter Self, Earth Lock, Schorching Ray, Darkness, Necrotic Cyst, Invisability 3- Dispel Magic, Great Thunderclap, Magic Circle Against Evil, Many Jaws, Nondetection, Necrotic Bloat , Nondetection-already from Penumbra bloodline 4- Resistance, Greater , Polymorph, Wings of Flurry, Dispelling Screen, Evard's Black Tentacles, Necrotic Domination, Confusion 5- Prismatic Ray, Lightning Leap, Magic Jar, Gtr Electric Vengence, Shadow Evocation, Necrotic Burst, False Vision 6-Chain Lightning, Contingency, Planar Binding, Shadow Walk, Necrotic Eruption, Mislead 7-Project Image, Radient Assault, Waves of Exhaustion, Plane Shift, Necrotic Tumor, Screen 8- Gtr Planar Binding, Lightning Ring, Horrid Wilting, Gtr Shadow Evocation, Necrotic Empowerment, Polymorph any Object-Turn your allies into Sun Giants! Turn your foes into Rocks! 9-Sphere of Ultimate Destruction, Shapechange, Maw of Chaos, Etherealness, Necrotic Termination, Time Stop Man, this spellist rocks!!!! Please Make suggestions if there is a spell in this list that needs swapping- I have not taken the sorcerer's ability to swap out spells into account. And I see a lack of GOOD Defensive spells, this list pwns warmage and does well vs wizards but looks like a Glass Cannon. (there are plently of abjurantion spells 4th level of lower-IOSV preq but better abj alternatives would be nice) Should I go Battle Sorcerer? Keep in Mind I've no intention of being in Mellee (until body of war becomes available) Spells needing swapping out later- Need Help Alterself once polymorph avaiswap for? shield once enchanted mithral bucklers avail, swap for? planar biding once Gtr avail, swap for? contingency once Gtr Shadow evoc avail for? Might use a feat to get Teleport. SPECIAL MENTION- Shadow evocation can mimic sonoruos hum- no save as no directly attacking foe. Anyone care to help with this build please. Maybe Sandshaper for a dip then take full IOSV or Incan? What's the best feat selection here (keep in mind i won't change lvl 1) Any suggestions for new spells for swapping as mentioned above, Prc/feat advice, eqipment advice, would be much appreciated. Cheers. |

| #3vicen_korelApr 19, 2008 1:55:45 | Ok I may have missed it in all the bold words and colored fonts but what is your firm build (what classes levels and feats that are must haves and not changing)? Also some point blank problems: 1. Arcane Disciple requires 4 ranks in Knowledge(religion) which is cross class for sorcerer so you can only have 2 at first level (I don't have LM so I don't know if mother cyst gives the skill but I don't think so) 2. Arcane Disciple spells are only added to your spell list, not automaticly to your spells known, and must be taken as spells known (you don't get them added to your spells known for free). They can also only be cast once per day and require a WIS of 10 + spell level (you need to boost your WIS for those higher spells). Other considerations: 1. Metamagic specialist is limited times per day, consider Rapid Metamagic at level 9 or higher 2. Dragonblooded Sorcerer (alt class features from RoTD) get draconic heritage which adds a skill, and if you persue the chain a little (feats are tight I know) you get spells added to your spells known, not just your spell list. |
| #4katashApr 19, 2008 18:07:49 | Ok I may have missed it in all the bold words and colored fonts but what is your firm build (what classes levels and feats that are must haves and not changing)? Build is conceptual right now. Will play in an upcoming game at lvl 1 and move on thru to 20 (hopefully) Firm level Lvl1 Socerer Str 10 Dex 14 Con12 Int 12 Wis 16 Cha 18. Feats-(w/2 flaws) Mother Cyst, Penumbra Bloodline, Spell Focus:Abj, Skill Focus: Spellcraft Lvl2 Sorcerer Lvl3 Sorcerer- Feat Arcane Disciple:Trickery Domain These levels are non-negotiable. The spellist mentioned above is merely mapping out the spells I'm intending to take. Also some point blank problems: Taking it at 3rd level to make skill preq. 2. Arcane Disciple spells are only added to your spell list, not automaticly to your spells known, and must be taken as spells known (you don't get them added to your spells known for free). They can also only be cast once per day and require a WIS of 10 + spell level (you need to boost your WIS for those higher spells).) DM rules for spont casters it added to spells known, (houserule, I know)otherwise warmages, buguilers and socerers get bugger all benefit. Wizards get too much love. Still only can be cast once per day, but considering the trickery list I think it's worth it. Starting with Cha 18, Wis 16 so will increase abilty scores to Cha 20,Wis 19 over my 20 levels. Obviously will need cloak of charisma and periphet of wis to boost DC's. Other considerations: 1. Aware of RapidMetamagic, would like to take it but- MOST of the spells on my list are B/C, Save or Die- though the build CAN blast thanks to Gtr Shadow Evocation, Many Jaws and Chain Lightning. Metamagic specialist is usable 3+1(for INT) times a day at the moment. In a build which doesn't have to blast EVERY round I'm hoping that's enough. Depending on what Prc I take I may get it. 2. Looked at that. Two many feats on too few extra spell IMO. I'm looking for help on 1. Best Feats to take depending on Prc going for. 2. Spells worth swapping out as I level up. 3. Advice on best prc. Currently I'm looking at going for either IOSV hence the feat selection (Spell Focus:Abj, Skill Focus: Spellcraft) thus far. These are negotiable. With maybe a dip for Sand Shaper (30-odd extra spells known not sure if any are real winners worth the CL sacrifice) OR IOSV/Abj Champ OR Anima Mage (again, not sure if 6th level Vestiges are worth the CL loss) OR Wild Soul (same problem) AS I see it. IOSV has some AWESOME defensive abilities (and caster's need all the protection they can get) Anima Mage (Vestiges can grant some good defensive abilities+ free metamagic) Sand Shaper all those extra spells are appealing if there are a few spells=win on the list. (Haven't had a REAL good look yet) Wild Soul- the unseelie path has a so/so summon seelie ally ability but the best part is the 7,8,9th level spells known (I already put these spells on my spells wanted list- should I go this way I can't learn Sphere of Ultimate Destruction but Wail of the Banshee (granted by class) is a good substitue. I'd learn Avasculate instead of Waves of exhaustion(granted by class) and Blackfire Instead of Horrid Wilting(granted by class) Of these I *think* either IOSV or Anima Mage path is best but I could be wrong. Advice? |
| #5jameswilliamogleApr 19, 2008 19:53:06 | Play a Shi-ar instead? I don't like Iot7V w/ Anima Mage, personally, though it does fit. One wants the veils ASAP, but one also wants the free metamagics ASAP. Difficult to fit both. |
| #6katashApr 19, 2008 22:25:24 | Actually I was looking at the classes in isolation rather than combining them. Not sure if there's even enough feats to do it. |
| #7vicen_korelApr 20, 2008 0:54:33 | Then I would say the question becomes do you plan to use metamagics (anima mage) a lot (it seems like you aren't), or do you want special abilities (which it seems like you do)? If your DM is really going to let you get spells known like that maybe go Kobold, use the web enhancement to up your sorcerer level by one then hit the rainbow servant (grab stuff out of cityscape if you need to hit a skill early too AFB and I don't remember the requirements) for 10 levels (not that bad if you have the 8/10 progression) and grab six levels of the Iot7V. You lose only 1 spell casting level, get all but one veil (and the doom ability). Not sure if I'm missing problems, like I said AFB. |
| #8w00tmanxApr 20, 2008 1:28:55 | You shouldn't use POA or any spell based on Alter self ![]() they are bad. Bad bad bad. |
| #9katashApr 20, 2008 1:42:37 | Yeah, I was leaning towards IOSV as well- especially since the spellist above lacks any real great defensive spells. Just aren't sure if anima mage is better- It's easier to qualify, does have some defensive ability (though usure if it keeps up with IOSV defensively) and gets the metamagic on top. Vestiges seem more flexible in that they can be swapped daily but I can't think of a combination which will come close to IOSV. However, there's also a vestige that grants item creation feats. I guess initially I'm asking which is more useful as an all round package or if you like 'more powerful'.... |
| #10jameswilliamogleApr 20, 2008 7:46:30 | Well, the Anima Mage builds really get cooking around L9, when you can start using free metamagics. Its easiest to build them to be gishes, as the Binder abilities lend themselves to being gishes more so than anything else, really (as far as combat goes; they make excellent party faces, as well). They have lots of options before this, too. Its a very smooth progression of abilities. If you do a classical Iot7V / Master Specialist build, you only have 1 prereq feat, but it doesn't start picking up steam until L13, when you get reactive warding. (Abjurist 3 / MS 6 / Iot7V 7 / MS +4) If you do a non-classical Iot7V / MS build, you get the awesome ability to put Antimagic fields on the party's fighter at L13. (Abjurist 3 / MS 10 / Iot7V 7) The latter 2 aren't as smooth in progression, and are a little late in blooming. You don't lose a caster level, though, which is nice. Here's how I'd decide: if your party has two front-liners, the lower two are probably better. If your party lacks front-line offensive power, the top Anima Mage will probably be better. Its a subtle difference, though. The Iot7V is a selfish PrC; I think its overrated for normal-sized games. |
| #11katashApr 20, 2008 16:12:51 | Our party does have a Warblade shooting for MO9, a Cleric of Tyr shooting for RKV (obviously adjusted to suit Tyr) They'll be the BSF 1.Diviner shooting for TN/MT (he'll have 8th level arcane/9th level divine casting- focusing on item creation feats) Toolbox caster/Information gatherer. 1.Beguiler shooting for JPM- he's a Trapmonkey/Controller/Face 1.Kineticist Psion going for Illithid slayer (Glass Cannon) that leaves me shooting for role as 'God' Master specialist/IOSV sounds great but I want to stay Sorcerer. MS is wizards only. I was thinking either sorc6or7/IOSV7/something? or Anima Mage build Guessing IOSV would be better here as Mellee is covered. I'd just hang right back and B/C. IOSV it is. Now keeping in mind the 1st level is already non negotiable. What's the best way to optimise it? |

| #13katashMay 02, 2008 7:32:03 | okay, think I got it. Spellist as above. Build Sorc9/IOSV7/Arch4 Feats:w/Flaws 1 Penumbra Bloodline, MotherCyst, Skill Focus(spellcraft) 3 Arcane Disciple 6Spll Focus Abj 9Gtr Spl Focus Abj 12Shadow Weave Magic (PGTF) 15Spell Focus Necro 18Spellcasting Prodigy (PGTF) Will this be an effective god? With archmage 1I'll take- Mastery of shaping first so I can blast away without hurting allies. Arch2- Mastery of Elements Will this work- Arch 3- Spellike Ability Polymorph any object x2day Arch 4- Spellike ability time stop x2day We're ruling arcane disciple means you know and can cast said spells 1/day. If I sacrifice appropritate solts can the spell like ability trick function? |
| #14katashMay 02, 2008 14:26:23 | Sorry, so will using the spell power class ability from arch allow a sorc to make his 1/day arcane disciple spells into a 2/day SLA? does this mean you could cast it 1/day with a slot and use your SLA x2 for 3 possible daily use instead of the 1 from arcane disciple? Cheers. |
