Help me build a nobody

Jun 23, 2009 15:57:37 I'm relatively new to D&D and would like help building a character centered around disguise. The idea behind this character is to avoid being known. Terrible things have happened in his past and his way of coping is to constantly change identities to the point where even the other party members can't tell his disguises from the real him.
I don't like Master of Masks because even though it's hard to tell WHO he is, it will always be obvious WHAT he is. He is always obviously a Master of Masks and will have a reputation. Reputation is exactly what I'm trying to avoid.
I've considered both the Mountebank and Spy Prestige Class's but am having trouble choosing between them. I thing Alter Ego trumps Cover Identity but the Spy's other skills seem stronger than the Mountebank. I'm also having trouble choosing a base class. I'm currently thinking Beguiler for the combination of spell casting and skills at the sacrifice of strong combat ability.
We're using the point buy system for abilities and I'm looking at Str 6 / Dex 15 / Con 12 / Int 14 / Wis 8 / Cha 16 as a Halfling. I'll boost Dex at level 4 then focus on Int the rest of the way. I plan to take 6 levels in Beguiler then 4 in Mountebank and 3 in Uncanny Trickster boosting the Mountebank to an effective level of 6. Beyond this I have no idea what to do.
So what say you? Am I missing a class that fits better? Any suggestions for how I should handle my leveling and feat selection?

Jun 23, 2009 16:23:25 Halfling is generally okay for roguish type characters but to really do a master of disguise you'll want to look into Changelings. Changelings can get you access to classes like Warshaper, Cabinet Trickster, and Chameleon (with Racial Emulation feat). Something like Beguiler 5/ Cabinet Trickster 5/ Chameleon 10 or Beguiler 6/ Spymaster 4/ Warshaper 5/ Cabinet Trickster 5 would possibly work.

Jun 23, 2009 16:36:12 I adore chameleon, and changeling. You can, in fact, qual for chameleon legally without racial emulation, but racial emulation will qualify you for all sorts of other interesting things, and is basically a must-take.

I guess this guy can do some cool stuff. He can't mimic class features like a chameleon, but he can really screw with an opponent's mind.

I proceed to see 4 posts in a row extolling the virtues of changling.

On a side note, I love changlings.

Jun 23, 2009 17:20:43 Changelings are a cool race, but may not fit the OP's character concept. In his post he seems to have decided on halfling already. If he wanted to change to changeling, human, or illumian he could go with a chameleon. It's probably the best PrC available for obscuring your class. For base class the factotum and rogue can both do a very nice job of pretending to be something else entirely. I once had an entire group of players convinced that my rogue was a paladin, since we never got to look at each others character sheets :D Bluff, Disguise, and Sleight of Hand can work wonders :P

I seem to recall at least one class that gets permanent nondetection too.

If you're a construct, you could use Obscure Object on yourself as well, which doesn't cover as many spells but is automatically successful (the person scrying doesn't get a CL check to beat it).

Being a human to get Chameleon sounds interesting. I like the idea of the Druid/Master of Many Forms but not having Bluff, Disguise, or Slight of Hand as class skills hurts. I suppose a level in Rogue would fix that though, right?

Master of Many Forms - A cleric, paladin, or ranger at 4th level who retrains a feat (PHB2) at 4th level to Initiate of Horus-Re (Champions of Valor) gains the ability to wildshape into a hawk, thus gaining entry to MoMF at ecl 5
Master of Many Forms - any character with the Divine Minion feat qualifies

for MoMF at ecl 2
Forsaker, ecl 2, Masters of the Wild - requires flaws from UA
Any of the dual casters using stuff like precocious apprentice, Illumian improved sigil (krau), earth spell, etc.
Favored In House, feat, Cityscape, increases a particular skill rank by 1, making some prestige classes more accessible
Hand of the Winged Masters, ecl 5, using sneak attack fighter (UA) and some feats to gain the class skills?
Sapphire Hierarch, ecl 4, using Illumian Improved Krau Sigil
Paragnostic Apostle, ecl 3, Complete Champion, some way to get 3rd level SLA
Celestial Mystic, ecl 4? Book of Exalted Deeds, low skill ranks, but need 4th level spells

i kinda like the divine menion route...

except, the div min wild shape isnt a proper 'class feature'..
