I'm looking at using a powerful shapechanger at level 9 in a new FR campaign..

Can anybody help me with an extremely powerful build for this? Items etc are open but would prefer these only to augment what the character can do (and have to be within reason)..

Read the posting guidelines and check Surreal's "some handy links to CO work".

Provide more information. Books available? Point buy or random roll? What kind of shapechanger? Lycanthrope, Doppleganger, Druid??? Polymorph Wiz? :p

Shifter (MM3/Eberron Campaign Setting) Warblade 4 (Tome of Battle) / Warshaper 4 (Complete Warrior) for ECL 8. Tack on Feral (Savage Species) or Mineral Warrior (Underdark) for 9.

A druid with natural spell, frozen wildshape (mostly for a cryohydra), and the enhanced wildshape spell.

Divine minion MoMF.

Polymorph/magic jar silliness.

Divine Minion template, use one of the +1 LA versions with Human. Get Alertness and Endurance at character creation to start out Master of Many Forms 7/ War Shaper 1 with Power Attack and Leap Attack. Get a Monk's Belt for Wis bonus to AC and unarmed strikes. Final build should go Master of Many Forms 10/ War Shaper 4/ Monk 1/ Tattooed Monk with Crane, Ocean, and White Mask. Take Combat Reflexes, Frozen Wild Shape, and Robilar's Gambit and use a 12-headed Cryohydra form to get a 12-bite AoO every time you're attacked. Use your free-action at-will racial wild shape ability to heal whenever you need to, even during combat.

aberrant wildshape with assume supernatural ability (did I get the name right?)

The above reads: wildshape into any aberration of your HD or less, and get one supernatural ability. Did you know that all the eye-stalks on a beholder are one supernatural ability? Or that a choker's extra standard action per round is a su ability (that's 2 spells a round, my dear)? Or that the Intellect devourer can eat someone's brain as a su ability?

Actually, there's an anecdote. I once played a druid with aberrant wildshape. There was a fire giant that was the leader of some big underground army we needed to get past. Intellect Devourer = I am now that giant. No disguise that can be 'seen-through', you literally are that guy. You wear him as a suit. Neat. Now, with your massive bluff bonus from a) wearing his skin and b) having basic information about his personality, how many people do you think will fail their sense motive check? Fun fun.

Interesting..

How does a druid get aberrant wildshape with assume supernatural ability?

What book is this in?

Thanks for all your suggestions!!

They're both feats, in Lords of Madness and Savage Species. You can just swap them into my build in place of Power Attack and Leap Attack.

Thanks!!

Can you only assume one ability per form change or can you choose which one is operating at a time?

Can you choose this feat more than once to have more than one acting at a time?

Never mind - you can take this feat more than once..
