I'm going to be solo fighting a tarrasque with my current level 17 wizard.
  • He's a Wizard 5, Red Wizard 8, Archmage 4 (for master of shaping, master of the elements, spell power, and SLA shapechange).

  • His effective caster level is 23 and has a +28 to overcome SR.

  • Forbidden schools are Necromancy, Illusion, and Enchantment.

  • I'll have my familiar available also.

  • I only have about 30,000 gp to spend and 1 week of preparation.

  • The DM will be swapping out the Tarrasque's 6 toughness feats for 6 improved toughness feats so his hit points will go from 858 to 1128.

  • We are using PHB, PHBII, DMG, and Monster manual 1-5.

My plan so far is to have Shapechange active and be in Choker form for the extra standard action.

Round 1: I plan to cast wall of force with a contingent wall of force being cast perpendicular to that one, then cast another wall of force with my extra standard action, then cast Celerity for another standard action to cast another wall of force. So in round one the tarrasque will be surrounded by a 70ft tall wall of force on all 4 sides.

Now I don't know what to do. I'm not allowed to do anything cheesy or infinite loopy, or use Gate. So I have 23 rounds before the wall of forces drop. I don't have to stick to this plan, it was just the best I could come up with.

My familiar and I can be shapechanged into anything with 23 hit dice or less. I'm having a hard time finding forms that between the two of us could destroy the tarrasque in 23 rounds.  I would love some help!

...Another thought, which is really lame, but to cast permanency on all the wall of forces, then cast a whole bunch of empowered Wall of Fires ( dealing something other than fire damage with master of the elements) then permanency those. The wall of fires just have to do more damage per round then his regeneration. I'd rather not do this, one because of the experience it costs, and two, the battle should be kept in round time.

Hm. What metamagics do you have?
if none, your best bet is summoning. Your walls should force the beast to be stuck in it's place, so now it's just a matter of dealing more than 40 points of damage to it, per round.
I'm not sure what spells the PHB2 had in it - apparently Celerity.
Summoning vrocks for a dance of ruin might work.

Think about killing it without dealing damage.

If there's a spell that creates a vacuum, you just have to place it on the Tarrasque's nose (such creatures normally aren't able to breathe through their mouth) and wait.

If there's no spell (or magic item or whatever) for this, create one!

Oh yeah, and make sure you make it permanent or at least persistent. A Tarrasque can hold it's breath for a veeery long time...

Otherwise, trap it on a different plane and starve it to death.... it might take a bit but, hey, it solves the ProblemLaughing

EDIT: Oh, right. try to get eaten and activate some immovable rods inside of the beast.

It's a long shot, but once he's coralled, throw in a prismatic wall/sphere.
At 10 minutes per level, it will out last your other walls.
Cross fingers and hope SR is overcome:

~Walls 1 & 4: Immune to Fire and Poison..so those 2 walls are out.
~ Walls 2 & 3 Acid and Electrical...assume saves are made for 60 damage/rnd
( not that it matters, but helps with regen for whatever else you do )

~ Wall 5: Turned to Stone...hope for failed save.
If DM rules it as a "death effect" the T instead takes it's full HP + 10 in damage.
Whip out the wish/miracle and end it quick.

~ Wall 6: Insanity...takes a failed save, but who doesn't want to see an Insane T
At very least 30% of the time it will now do nothing and another 20% it just runs around w/o attacking...not great but I'd take it.

~ Wall 7 Sent to another plane...hope for that failed Will save, the T's worse save, and it's now someone else's problem. Hope they don't track it back to you.

Of course assumes SR is failed for those walls and a save is eventually failed, Wall 7 being most likely due to Will save, but did I miss any other big problems with idea? It was an odd thought.

I now need to make an adventure where an Insane Tarrasque gets transported/dumped into the Kingdom the adventurers are allied with. I find that thought very amusing.

Starving to death oddly doesn't work.  RAW, nothing can die from starvation in D&D, since it never ends up doing lethal damage.  Wierd, I know.

Gate it to the Elemental Plane of Water.  It will drown eventually and nobody will have to worry about it again (you don't even have to cast Wish, so keep that 5,000 xp for yourself).

Um, he said he can't use Gate.

But maybe you can put a cap on those four walls and fill it with water somehow... Create Water is a 0-level spell, and hirelings don't cost that much.  How many would you need to pay to fill that cube?

Fly above the Tarasque and cast Prismatic Sphere, then fly away.

Then use Celerity to cast Reverse Gravity. Make sure to position the Prismatic Sphere so that as the tarrasque oscillates up and down at the top of the Reverse Gravity, it hits the edge of the Primsatic Sphere over and over again...

Ah, I missed that.

Plane Shift also works, he just has to beat the SR and have the thing fail its weakest save.  It's probably a little easier, really, as there is no finegaling the thing to go through the portal and you really don't care where on the plane it goes.

Wow, thanks for all of the responses guys!

Hm. What metamagics do you have?...Summoning vrocks for a dance of ruin might work.

I only have Empower Spell for meta-magic. Persistent Spell is unavailable.

The Vrock's dance of ruin sounds good, I can afford enough scrolls to summon enough to have a dance of ruin going off every turn. 20D6 a turn, or 70 damage average a turn minus his 40 regeneration, 30 net damage a turn, hmm that would take about 40 turns to drop this tarrasque though. The summons or the walls won't last that long.

Plane Shift is a possibility. I have a 20% chance to fail overcoming spell resistance. The DC will be 29, so with a will save modifier of +20, he'll have a 55% chance to save. The spell is touch, so I am worried about the readied bite he'll have waiting for me or my familiar considering he has scent, blind fight and a +57 to hit...

Hahaha, the visual of this is hilarious. So far this seems like the most likely to work. At a DC 31 and an 80% chance to overcome SR, he”ll eventually have to fail.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming!

Mirror Image, if you have it, should help against getting eaten. It's not foolproof, but much better than a 50% miss chance - especially with the re-roll it has.

Plane Shift is a good idea, a RANDOM plane shift not so much. You don't want Pazuzu after you concerning this Tarrasque that just happened to appear in his domain.

Don't forget, you can always have your familiar deliver the spell so you don't have to get anywhere near the thing.  Summoning a couple of critters to keep it busy would also be handy (Bone Devils with at-will Wall of Ice are great for keeping it busy).

Perhaps I'll have my familiar Shapechange into an incorporeal form, then I'll cast Limited Wish to give the tarrasque a -7 to it's next save, then have my familiar deliver a Plane Shift.
If I pass SR with the Limited wish, his will save will be a +13 against my DC 29 Plane Shift.  I do have a pretty good chance of bypassing SR with a +28 vs his 32 SR.  And since Limited Wish and Plane Shift are 7th level spells, I can do it multiple times if need be!

My DM might argue that I didn't actually kill the tarrasque, so if I Plane Shift him to the elemental plane of water, he'll eventually drown, then I could temporarily Plane Shift myself there to cast Wish so he's actually dead, correct?

Wether it's actually dead or not isn't a concern.  It's unconcious or dead for the rest of eternity (or until some **** planeshifts it back).  The fact is, you won.  If your DM decides to be a pain about it, then yes, you could do that.  Go there the next day, find the dumb thing, and put it out of its misery.

Drowning kills creatures with Regeneration, since it doesn't deal damage but actually changes their hit point total.  Round 1 puts them at 0 (hence the drowning yourself back to life trick), round 2 is -1, and round 3 is dead.  Wether the clause in the Tarrasques regeneration says you have to cast Miracle or Wish to keep it dead overrides that is up to the DM.

Death by Awesome? Abuse the fact that there's a 5% chance to get Plane-Shifted no matter how high your Save is.

Addendum: www.google.ca/search?hl=en&client=firefo... At least I don't remember enough of it to get angry at the fact it's gone. Basically, I think I learned that you should abuse something that weakens the Tarrasque's Will Save.

There are hints of it everywhere! community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... forum.rpg.net/showthread.php?p=10082864

OH SHI-

It's vulnerable to pretty much any charm/dominate spells. Why kill it when you can make it your [naughty]?

2) It's Immune to *ENERGY DRAIN* and *ABILITY DAMAGE*. It's not immune to ABILITY DRAIN. Summon critters with ability drain, which tend to be incorporeal undead, and [taboo] it.

Step 1/ convinve friendly dwarves and a few thousands peons to dig trenches
Step 2/ lure the beast into the trenches (Phantom Steed comes in real handy there)
Step 3/ once it is in the pit, signal the dwarves to release magna/ fast solidifying cement.
Step 4/ watch the powerless beast as 90% of its body is buried.

At this point our DM ruled we deserved 1/4 of its XP because we had not "killed" it. Okay, I said, we'll have the workers build a wall around the pit... and re rout the sewers. Yeah, I want to drown that thing into [Ooh, lala!] and [Praise the lord!].
We got half XP.

That somewhat low caster level could easily be increased with Circle Magic and some simulacra.

I take it you won't be able to cast Dominate Monster on it, because if you could, Celerity+Reverse Gravity+Limited Wish+Dominate Monster (repeated if necessary) should be enough. You'll have lots of time once the Reverse Gravity hits.

Failing that, set up ability drain attacks with incorporeals. They usually don't have much trouble with Reverse Gravity. Don't forget to harvest some of the body for your army of Tarrasque Simulacra.

Or (more likely to be allowed) Death Knell and an Orange Ioun Stone.  Yeah, that's only a +2 boost, but it helps.  It also stacks.

re: raising caster level: those last two posts reminded me of deathwishjoe's infinate caster level loop using Greater Consumptive Fields: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758... The thread's dead now; the link to deathwishjoe's thread doesn't work.

Luckily, it requires Sublime Chord. Who loves that PrC's name too? It reminds me of the movie "Perfume".
