| #1kilrathJun 09, 2009 22:57:19 | I am currently in an Oathbound campaign on one of the gaming tables that i play at and i need to get a new character ready fairly soon because i am expecting a large part of the party to be killed, myself being one of the most likely to die because of my current party role (essentially i tank for the party, High hp and AC and i do a good deal of damage in CC) The next character i am looking to run, as told in the thread title, will be a Beguiler/Psion/Cerebremancer at level 11 or 12, likely an Elan for the damage mitigation abilities that they have. My role in the party would be that of wide area damage and party assistance through debuffing the enemies using beguiler spells. I want to know what you think of the initial concept and the best possible way to optimize this build... Feats, Items, powers, ect... Otherwise i would like to know what kind of build would be able to cover similar roles with better abilities. Thanks in advance for any help. |

| #3kilrathJun 10, 2009 9:29:38 | Because of the nature of the campaign (being an oathbound campaing) it is very likely that he feat would be allowed so long as i write training of some sort into my background. The dm is pretty open to anything so long as you look at the original source rather than something like the Quintessential books. Books that are denied for the most part are as mentioned above the Quintessential books, book of exalted deeds, and most of unearthed arcana. |
| #4ikildkennyJun 10, 2009 10:12:44 | before going the precaucious apprentice route i personall would use the heigten spell + versityle spellcaster trick, because you have a use for both feats even after you have entered cerebremancer ... so the build will look something like: Human beguiler 1 (versityle spellcaster, heigten spell) psion 1 psion 2 (practiced spellcaster beguiler) psion 3 psion 4 cerebremancer 1 to 6/7 ... if you want to squeeze practiced manifester in ... though i don't think youll need it Edit: because beguiler knows his whole spell list right from the beginning, you do not even need heigten spell - only the ability to generate 2nd lvl spellslots via versityle spellcaster ... so you save another feat (or are free to be something other than human ... grey elf maybe?[as long as you can get by the favored class problem ... if not it will be beg.2/psion3/cereb6]) |
| #5kilrathJun 10, 2009 10:29:48 | Well, like i mentioned i am looking to make the character an Elan so that could work out nicely since the char is then naturally Psioic and i don't need the wild talent feat to enter Psion, Also the Elan allows me to use PP to reduce damage i take and increase my saves if needed. I'm thinking at later levels i would like to add Elan resiliance and Elan Resistance, to further improve those abilities... I might Not plan for those if i can find some other feats that would have greater use and i think that i should be able to given that i can just spend more PP to keep myself alive if need be rather than losing 2 feats from this. |
| #6blightersbaneJun 10, 2009 10:55:18 | you want to create a battle-mage, a walking spell platform, capable of mass destruction that can reak havic with the area damage spells raining death down on its hapless victims, yes. Then why beguiler? not exactly known as mass damage specialist, if you wanted a mindbender type guy have your Psion go Telepath, otherwise here is some below possibilites. Cerebramancer same as Mystic Thuerge but Psion instead of divine...right? Warmage / Psion Keneticist: crazy damage + int mod to all + your in armor Sorcerer / Wilder: well its a ****** off cha based build anyways, naaahhh wizard / psion: lots of feats, have the wiz side pick utility and buff / de buff and have psion go super nova with keneticist... Sorcerer / Favored Soul Psion / Cleric (using psionic magic transparency) this seems pretty cool! wiz / cleric warmage / favored soul cha based caster, damage and healing, has potential warmage /cleric again in armor big boomer with all those divine goodies I think there is a feat that allows you to get into cerebramancer at levels 2/2? I just dont know where that wuold be. Just wanted you to see more possibilites besides a 12th Psion / 12th Cleric oh my oh my just sounds sweet! Blightersbane |
| #7kilrathJun 10, 2009 11:05:16 | A large part of going for Beguiler is that the group tends to get split up to search in areas and we need another character capable of finding and disabling traps and such, My current character also seems to have this job though in his case it is via being a human (Ologatu) shield... He walks down the hall or opens the door so he is the one to get blasted... The other big thing with the beguiler is access to all spells under the beguiler list and you are a spontaneous caster so i can use what i need when i need it rather than having to prepare something. The other thing is that i can cover the blasting portion with a kineticist Psion fairly effectively. Edit: Also, i'm not looking at mystic theurge... i am looking at cerebremancer through beguiler (thief mage) and Psion. The synergy is already there as both are int based classes. |
| #8blightersbaneJun 10, 2009 12:10:31 | bang for the buck 12th cleric / 12th Psion hard to beat! Tank caster, full plate anyone! BB |
| #9kilrathJun 10, 2009 12:30:41 | I do like the idea of the mystic theurge but i have found in our current campaing that we will need the extra rouge skills that the beguiler would bring. |
| #10phaedrusxyJun 10, 2009 12:50:32 | Well, like i mentioned i am looking to make the character an Elan so that could work out nicely since the char is then naturally Psioic and i don't need the wild talent feat to enter Psion, You don't have to be naturally psionic to enter the Psion class. Any race can enter it. I know Elans are popular, but I'm not that crazy about them. If you can use them, Kalasthar are definitely better IMO. Warforged are also nice, but might not be as good for a sneaky character, though I guess a warforged scout could work. I'd actually prefer human for the bonus feat to elan. |
| #11hogarthJun 10, 2009 14:59:46 | I know Elans are popular, but I'm not that crazy about them. If you can use them, Kalasthar are definitely better IMO. Really? I find the +4 racial bonus to saves and immunity to Charm Person, Hold Person, etc. is usually better than the extra power points. YMMV, of course. (That juicy save bonus has helped me on a number of occasions...) |
| #12kilrathJun 10, 2009 23:04:46 | One of the things our DM will do is require that you be naturally psionic or that you have the wild talent feat in order to take any psionic class. The reason he does so is because it seems logical that it would need to be so and i have to stick with that in the creation of the character, though i may be able to sacrifice some of the Human's beginning skil points or the human bonus points all together to make my character's world a Psionic world... The campaign is oathbound so anything is really possible so long as we can find a good enough explanation to go with our backstories. |
| #13kilrathJun 12, 2009 23:34:44 | Well, with a little bit of help i have gotten the Psionics approved as written so i need not be naturally Psionic nor do i need wild talent. I have also rolled up my stats (DM Viewed rolling) and they fall as follows: Str 12 Dex 16 Con 17 Int 18 Wis 15 Cha 12 Is there anything there that anyone would recommend changing given that i want to make the character a Beguiler/ Kinetecist/ Cerebremancer? Because i got it allowed as is i am now looking to be a human for the extra feat and skill points using able learner to keep search and disable device class skills ect... What i want to know now is what i should do in regards to powers, What ones to choose and where it would be prudent to put my extra stat points given up to level 12. Also the precocious apprentice feat was actually shot down because the DM felt it would advance my character to quickly. This also lead to the other suggested path being shot down though i will very likely be taking the 2 feats (versatille spellcaster and heighten spell) anyway down the line a ways so long as i have room for them. The Psionics are intended to be mostly blasting but i still want to have some decent utility in there in the case that magic may be ineffective. Thanks in advance :D Edit: Also, while we are not allowed to take flaws we are allowed to take a Hubris from swashbuckling adventures during character creation in order to gain an additional feat. All together i am looking at 7 feats plus whatever i may get from classes. |
