character is going to be a third level elven sorcereress (1st level party got TPKed, dm now wants 3rd level chars, his little bonus for double TPK)

my level 1 spells are going to be ray of enfeeblement, magic missle and any PHB spell you can suggest

0 level spells are going to have, mage hand, predestignation and acid splash, need 2 other spells

i need feats and equipment for a 3rd level high elf sorcereress
(PHB and DMG only)

stats (28 points)

str 8
con 12
dex 16
int 12
wis 10
cha 16

what i planned so far
mithral shirt
masterwork buckler
light crossbow w/ 20 bolts
dagger
what else should i get?

What feats should i pick?

female 3rd level high elf sorcereress (adult, equivalent to 17 in human years)
2700 gp to spend

should i get other stuff or make mithral shirt a +1?

i also need feats and spells from the phb

I'd swap magic missle for color spray. You can get similar damage production witha bow or crossbow and color spray is a save-or-die at low levels. Mage armor is a good defensive spell at that level, that way you could save the money on a mithral shirt and get something else. Grease and charm person are good choices too if you're a little creative.

Feats are going to be a little tougher since it's only PHB and core. Improved initative is always a good choice. Spell focus is a good choice too.

Finally unless you're dead set on being an elf I'd recommend another race since d4 hit dice and -2 con really don't mix too well. Gnome is a good choice due to small size, +2 con, and +1 DC to illusions.

Seconded on the gnome, but a human would also be good.

As for feats, SF (Illusion) and Color Spray can dominate early levels, but quickly loses effectiveness (gnome helps here, too). You could take SF (Necromancy) for the debuffs (Ray of Enfeeblement, Ray of Exhaustion, Enervation, etc.), which are powerful at most levels. Improved Initiative also works, and if you take Spell Focus on something, be sure to grab Greater Spell Focus. Metamagic Feats aren't so great for a core Sorcerer if your DM enforces the casting time extension without giving you options to mitigate it, but you might want to take Extend or Maximize.

Also, make your Charisma 18. I'd suggest dropping your Wis to 8, your Int to 10, and your Dex to 14 to accomplish that. It might seem tough to be that weak, but the increase in spells per day and save DCs is more than worth it.

Core makes things tough. You're not going to have much to work with.

I'll have to third gnomie goodness. But if you are dead set on elven flavor there is a sub race of elf called the star elves they get -2 CON, +2 CHA. They can be found in the forgotten realms supplement unapproachable east.

The thing about the sorcerer class is well it has no class features to speak of. It gets an adorable liability at first called a familiar and thats it. When that little fuzzball bites it your XP goes with him. The sorcerer class has great flavor and absolutely nothing else.

There is some light at the end of this tunnel in the form of splat books. Are you restricted to the core 3? Alternate class features are something you might want to look into specifically in the players handbook two and complete champion.

High elf isn't the best, but if you want to, sure... just make sure your con is decent. For your abilities, I'd disagree with swiftblu - while DCs are nice to boost, you already have a fair number of spell slots, and you should ideally aim for spells with no or partial save... while extra skills and HPs always help.

SF illusion is imo very good for a sorcerer - your few spells known mean you'll really love to use shadow evo/conjuration, which doubles the value of SF illusion. Gnome ties in nicely and - through Shadowcraft Mage - eventually gets great value for its money. Other sorcerers aren't too bad either. For spells, another vote for color spray instead of magic missile - at that level MM does too little damage, sorry. For your third spell, it depends. If you're good enough and your DM isn't a total .... , silent image is very good. Enlarge person is an oldie but goodie, at least until you swap it for a wand: if you have tanks, it is the #1 level 1 spell to cast on them.

Check if you can get a buckler from a material with ASF reduction: 10% from your shirt is already bordering on too much.

Predestination sounds like a sweet 0-level spell.

but im pretty sure it would only be available to wizards...

Predestination? What is that?

If you meant Prestidigitation then it is also available to sorcerers ... check your PHB.

I'd personally choose magic missiles over color spray. I've been in many situations where color spray just isn't that useful (despite all of the love it gets on the board here), while magic missile retains it usefulness through all levels. A crossbow isn't the same - you likely won't hit with it.

However ... since you have an extra 1st level spell to choose, color spray is a good choice for that.

the only elves he allowed so far are high elves, (the only dwarves are hill dwarves) (rockgnomes, lightfeet, half orcs, humans are either flannes or oridians) i was looking for the dex, low light vision, slender build and the right to pointy ears. (gotta be an elf) i am also going to ask the dm if he will allow perform (dance) instead of material or somatic components (both subbed by dancing) i am also going to ask the guy if i can swap bluff for perform (dance) another thread told me to be more utilititarian and more of a buffer than a damage dealer. 20 bolts should last.

Ok, mind if I give you an unsought-after advice?

Don't . Swap . Bluff

Seriously, it's the most useful skill on the sorcerer list, and one of the most useful ones, period. If you lose it, it better be for something really insane like UMD in a medium or high-magic setting. If you're dead-set on getting perform (dance) I'd suggest looking for another way.

As for dancing around, there is a PrC in Races of Faerun you might want to check - the Spelldancer. Even if your DM doesn't allow it, it might fit you.

Quick note--as an elf, you can use a longbow instead of a crossbow.
