I need some help! I just started playing with a new group and though I have upgraded to 4th Edition they are still on 3.5. The problem is that I sold all of my books and don’t really have anywhere to start short of the boards. The characters are currently 4th level but should be 5th soon. I am going to jump in at that level and the dude that is the GM is leaving soon so I only anticipate getting a few levels before we start a new campaign, hopefully in 4th Edition.

In short, I want a Human that is optimized/effective from level 4+ or so. I don’t really care about the class or anything because the group has all the major roles filled, I will just be an extra body. I just want to be very effective and have a couple tricks starting out. As far as stats, base stats are: 16, 16, 13, 11, 10, 8 or any other standard buy. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Commoner 4 with the Tasty and Chicken Infested flaws with ranks in Use Magic Device, and Skill Focus: UMD.

Seriously dude. Give us something to go on. At least decide what you want to actually do. Or just browse around in the Handy Links till you find something that looks cool.

I hear you dude. Problem is that these guys have very little in the way of source books and I have not read a 3.5 edition book in 2 years or so. I always enjoyed the Artificer but because I dont have any books and they are not familiar with the class it could be an issue of me explaining everything. I am not familiar enough with builds that are effective in the low to mid levels. I dont want anything with tricks or need for polymorph or tons of magical items. I was looking for a nice Blastificer build or maybe a Ranger archer build or something but the 3.5 portion of the boards are hard to navigate these days. Anything that has some staying power is up my alley...I dont want a one trick pony or anything. I will keep looking but if you have any ideas I would appreciate it...though the commoner does sound promising ha-ha ;)

Try looking around here:

I'd say just go with something simple that you can mostly build using the srd. The 3rd level rogue/ranger TWF build in that link would suffice.

This should come in handy, too:

Ian

STR 10
DEX 16
CON 10
INT 11
WIS 16
CHA 8

Monk1Cleric3+ or Monk1Druid3+
You take a class that has Wisdom as something an important stat (Cleric and Druid, but also Ranger) but you take one level of Monk, to gain alot of things, but most importantly: add Wis to Cha. You also gain a bonus feat, flurry of blows and unarmed strike. Say you also want to have alot of skillpoints, and I'm taking the Ranger as a direction to go in.

Skill monkey:

STR  11
DEX 13
CON 10
INT 16
WIS 16
CHA 8

If you go for the skills, I suggest you start with rogue on 1st lvl. The rogue has the highest skillpoints you can get: (8+Intmod)x4, 44 in this case, as opposed to 36 if you start with Ranger and it gets as low as 20 skillpoints of you start with, say, a cleric. Now you want to keep your important ability scores limited. A ranger already has 3: STR, DEX and WIS. They are about the same for a monk, and therefor make up a good combination, though the priorities are a bit diffirent. Either way, they make good combinations, except for the dip in Base Attack Bonus. I'm currently playing Monk1Cleric7 and it has worked out pretty well so far. I have Wisdom as my highest ability score, which is imported for my AC, the DC modifier of spells, the amount of spells. I also have a high dex, important for AC and  and the rest is pretty much divided.

Rogue1, Monk1, Ranger2

This gives you nice skillpoints, which more then make up for the skillpoint dip of the monk level (4+Int modifier). That being said, the Rogue level already gives you sneak attack. Personally I would not go for Ranger at all, instead being a Rogue1Monk1Rogue3 Rogue1 Monk1Druid2 or a Rogue1Monk1Cleric2.

But then again, with a high INT, you could also go for wizard, though they don't handle losing levels to other classes well.

Holy freakin' god whatever you do don't put a 10 in Con. That is the second most important stat for pretty much every class in the game.

He wants to play cool stuff, and the campaign won't run for long. Either because his character dies or because the campaign ends. But you are right, especially on the long run a Con mod is pretty important.

A whirling frenzy variant barbarian could be good if you want to go the melee rout. Only take 1 level in barbarian and take extra rage (Complete Warrior) twice for a total of 5 uses of rage per day. There's a good chance someone in the group has Complete Warrior. If you're lucky, someone will have Complete Champion too. That opens up lion totem barbarian, for pounce.

With 5 uses per day, you could use whirling frenzy every encounter making your full attack +8/+8 (2d6+8) and your AC 22. That's pretty solid for 4th level.

You can take 2 fighter levels to offset the extra rage feats. If you've got nothing else in mind, you could aim for fighter 4 and weapon specialization.
