Hi,

I'm working on creating a Tome Dragon cohort to take with the Dragon Cohort feat. They've got some pretty amazing racials and I prefer the idea of a caster cohort over a more melee/breath weapon oriented Dragon. My final ECL for the cohort can be 11 (14 with the feat), but I'm struggling with where to go past the dragon HD.

Here's what I currently have:

Show

Very Young Tome Dragon
6d10 HD
Dragon type, Arcane Dragon Subtype
Loredrake feature (Dragons of Eberron)

Abilities: Str: 11, Dex: 11, Con: 14, Int: 24, Wis: 20, Chr: 26 (+2 from HD went here)

AC 16 (+1 Size, +4 NA, +1 Insight)
Move: 20 ft/90 ft (fly w/good maneuverability)

SA: Breath Weapon: 2d8 (16) 40ft, Arcane Sight (Sp) at will
SQ: Telepathy 100ft, Free Metamagic: +1 (reduce all metamagic costs by 1, no increase to casting time), Alternate Form (Su) 3/day, Blindsense (Ex): 60ft, Keen Senses (Ex): 4x human, Darkvision (Ex): 120ft, Immune: Paralysis/Sleep, Spell Resistance 13

Casts spells as a 7th level Sorcerer. Automatically knows all Conjuration and Divination spells.

Add that dragon psychosis thing that changes sorcerer casting into wizard. Then prestige class out for wizardly classes...

I'd be wyrmling if you could.

Loredrake is good. Otherwise just stick with increasing CL.

Well, I was inclined to go wyrmling initially, but you gain the free metamagic at Very Young, and I felt that that, plus the extra Dragon HD was worth a loss of one CL. There's some additional attribute gains as well.

Thanks!

Isn't Loredrake a feat, not a variant? I thought that entire page was feats when I was flipping through DoE.

My understanding is that it's a variant. The formatting doesn't match normal feat descriptions and the fact that it trades off abilities instead of just offering a boost of power is indicative of it being a variant feature.

Is that the spellhoarding one? I think I might have that issue of Dragon somewhere...

yes, its the spellhoarding one. though I think the dragon's stats have to not be the non elite array, they need to be a different array with higher than 'average' intelligence stats for the creature.

With that crazy int, wizardly spellcasting is a huge advantage...

Well, I don't have the book in front of me, but iirc, it requires:

racial HD change to d10s
Must worship Aureon or The Shadow
Lose access to any clerical domains

Gain +2 to sorcerer casting ability.

Edit: Found this link on the boards where Phoenix00's explained it:

IIRC one of the DragonLance books has a Prc that let's you increase the ECL of your dragon cohort by another 3 levels.

if i remember loredrake will also strip away your ability to spontaneously cast any conjuration spell and divination spells. The loredrake ability removes clerical spellcasting, domain spellcasting (and if I remember all non traditional sorcerer casting).

Check your book, for if it does, I don't think it is worth it then.

Well, it's a bit ambiguous on second reading. It starts off by saying that you gain a Sovereign related ability instead of gaining cleric spells and access to certain domains, and that dragons without access to cleric spells lose nothing from taking on these archetypes.

However, there's one line that makes it unclear, where it refers to optional spell selections being replaced. I'm not entirely sure what that means, but in the context of the rest of it, I'd guess it's only cleric spells. It's probably something to ask my DM about to get a ruling. You could certainly argue that the core dragons don't have anything similar to the tome dragons spells known ability, so they might not have thought to mention it when writing Dragons of Eberron. In the tome dragon's favor, it does say that they know all divination and conjuration spells on the sorcerer spell list, which is worded differently from the addition of cleric spells. Regardless, I'll assume it works the way I want it to until I can get a DM ruling.

Thanks for pointing it out. I had only glossed over it before and hadn't paid attention to the specific wording.

Any suggestions for the feats or class levels I have to assign?
