| #1iyailleNov 11, 2008 14:58:07 | Hi, I am playing a level 7 Hexblade in the FR and I want to challenge a cleric which is around level 15. Why ?!? I don't want to die ! But with some optimisation I think it can be possible. The goal is to become the High Priest of Umberlee in Westgate (me ? megalomaniac ?). I asked my DM and here are the rules of the duel :
My build : |
| #2woodenbandmanNov 11, 2008 15:02:00 | Buy Dust of Choking and Sneezing? I don't know, man. That's an impossible fight. |
| #3iyailleNov 11, 2008 15:44:27 | Buy Dust of Choking and Sneezing? I don't know, man. That's an impossible fight. CO boards are wonderful ! Thanks a lot ! So I win init, I hold my breath, I cast the dust, I hit to death... And with a little more luck, the guy that can lend me the trident has the level to create this dust (has He the item creation feat, that is a other problem...). |
| #4carnivoreNov 11, 2008 15:54:16 | be careful how you plan to do it.... notice:Dust of Sneezing and Choking: This fine dust appears to be dust of appearance. If cast into the air, it causes those within a 20- foot spread to fall into fits of sneezing and coughing. Those failing a DC 15 Fortitude save take 2d6 points of Constitution damage immediately. In addition, those failing a second DC 15 Fortitude save 1 minute later are dealt 1d6 points of Constitution damage. Those who succeed on either saving throw are nonetheless disabled by choking (treat as stunned) for 5d4 rounds. this will affect you also(whether you hold your breath or not, it is a Magical effect) ....... it would be better to have your Familiar deliver it... while you are outside the area of effect..... even if you make your save you would be stunned |
| #5NiteCyperNov 11, 2008 16:39:28 | I'd say to try a master plan as well. It's more than just whacking each other with big sticks. Perhaps you could, and this is only a brainstorm, come into teh arena with a symbol of her religion, use it as a shield and she'd be afraid to attack you because it is sacrilegious to destroy a religious symbol that belongs to her faith. If she's not an optimizer, I'm assuming she is more about the roleplaying of a character which would have quirks like that. She could care more about the morality of her character than actually winning a fight like COers do. |

Anything that gives you additional actions in a battle helps push the advantage in your favour. The hexblade dark companion option (PH2,p47) that gives a -saves/-ac is a useful idea. Lower saves via dark companion [no action required], Maximized (if you can) Touch of Idiocy (from scroll) [standard action], Hexblade Curse [free action], DMM Quickened Hideous Laughter [swift action]. That leaves a move action available, probably to get close enough to touch the opponent with the ToI. That is the best opening salvo I can think of to hit the cleric (if you go first). If you are good (or lucky), you might be able to wipe out most of the opponent's ability to cast spells and basically make him a huddled heap on the floor. Dark companion lowers saves, no save, nothing to prevent it since it is proximity-based. Touch of Idiocy is a Hexblade spell (2nd level), allows no save (although SR is allowed). Lowers all mental stats 1d6 (which also hits Will saves if you do good against Wis). Hexblade curse relies upon Will save failure, but that's why you hit with everything else first. Tasha's Hideous Laughter is a 1st level spell and Will save, but by the time you go through everything else, you might be able to pull it off. Make sure the DM allows you to use the DMM:Quicken on a hexblade spell, since I believe some require it only work on cleric spells. Following up with a scroll of "Bestow Curse" to either/or further reduce saves/lower Wis (or another mental stat, if already low by idiocy) to sub-intelligent levels (or drooling mess) would mean an auto-win. Edit: If you are set on the idea of the first-round damaging spells, you can ready an action to attack -when- the opponent attempts to "do anything offensive in nature". IE: attack, cast a spell, whatever. This would put you right before her in initiative, and would then force her to make massive concentration checks in order to ever cast a spell during the fight. Either option, of course, assumes you -win- initiative. |
| #8iyailleNov 11, 2008 17:11:38 | DMM works only on Divine Spells (from errata) and Hexblade are Arcane spellcasters. But thanks for the others stuff. |
| #9widowNov 11, 2008 17:23:57 | DMM works only on Divine Spells (from errata) and Hexblade are Arcane spellcasters. True enough, but you can get around it depending on your book source. In fareun there is Southern Magicain that lets you switch divine to arcane or the other way around so many times a day. Also there is the Alternate Spell Source feat from dragon mag that lets you convert all day long. The only requirement is you can cast both divine and arcane spells which your cleric should be able to cover. I am sure your race is already selected, but the one race in Races of destiny can "DMM" twice a day basically. Hmm, if you have the cash maybe you can get a candle of invocation. You can put it in a lamp and carry that on to the battle field. Sac it first chance you get for a gate spell. There must be something you can pull in to smite that cleric. |
| #10rasmus_wagnerNov 11, 2008 19:10:06 | Bribe the fiend. Seriously, that's your best bet. You'll be crazily outclassed. Another idea is maneouvrability and speed. Stay out of melee range and snipe at her until she's dead. She probably won't have a lot of dispels or boosted movement (not a CO character), and being evil, she cant spontaneously cure. If you're more-or-less the same alignement, most of her ranged spells will be useless against you. |

Sac it first chance you get for a gate spell. There must be something you can pull in to smite that cleric. Cheap (8400gp) and effective, TY. When I'll reach the 8th level, a Marilith will be controlable, nice ! Bribe the fiend. How ? Do I promise the soul of my opponent ? Another idea is maneouvrability and speed. | #12carnivoreNov 12, 2008 11:19:23 | Wouldn't the hexblade's mettle negate the stunned effect? if he makes his save... yes, but if not ![]() :D |
| #13idontmuchcareforitNov 12, 2008 15:54:44 | i like the dust of sneezing and choking idea. jack up your fort save go go belt of con and cloak of resistance |
| #14muertogNov 12, 2008 16:09:49 | Make sure that the DM will play ball with the dust/mettle idea. There's a reason why most games I have played in have banned the dust... No save stun for 5d4 rounds? |
| #15rebel7284Nov 12, 2008 16:23:34 | Cheap (8400gp) and effective, TY. When I'll reach the 8th level, a Marilith will be controlable, nice ! For most magic items, you use the caster level of the item's creator, not your caster level. You can gate in something much, much bigger ![]() |
| #16iyailleNov 13, 2008 8:53:37 | Indeed. So IIRC, it represents a pool of 34 hd ! Why are there gamebreaking items like that ?!? |
| #17muertogNov 13, 2008 10:31:10 | Becase the game isn't always playtested as well as it should be, people are more imaginative than the original developers intended, DMs allow such items into the game, or at least before the items are balanced for the level of gameplay the characters are at. |
| #18iyailleNov 17, 2008 11:24:29 | I have Feat in reserve. I think I gonna take Tru believer (+2 to 1 save per day and the ability to use Relics). It is RP and optimized. If I make the save against the Dust of Sneezing and Choking, thanks to Mettle, I won't be stunned. The DC is 15. I will have : +13 = +2 (base, Hexblade) +2 (base, Cleric) +4 (Constitution) +2 (true believer) +3 (Arcane resistance (Cha to save)) I fail only on naturals 1 or 2. Yes we can ! |
| #19tshernNov 17, 2008 11:34:18 | True believer might be RP, but it sure as hell is not optimized. And even if you resort to Dust of sneezing and choking, you still need to win the initiative and Clerics have plenty of ways to buff that. |
| #20iyailleNov 17, 2008 11:45:52 | In this duel, there is no preparation. And with my Dex, Improved Init and a trait, I have +9 on Initiative. True believer is RP and optimized, I mean only in this situation. So you're right, it's not optimized ![]() |
| #21tshernNov 17, 2008 11:57:00 | Hopefully he doesn't have Craft contingency spell, that would ruin your day. With that initiative you stand a good chance of going first. Good luck! |
| #22iyailleNov 17, 2008 15:25:28 | If I lose initiative, I can make my save against her Save-or-be-screwed spell. The game is not lost ! |
