| #1kyotoApr 15, 2008 13:00:24 | Ok I'm sure this has been posted a few times. But as I'm a new member here and there are several pages to look through I don't really want to spend a long time to search. Though I do have time. Ok so currently playing a game that is purely optimization. If you don't optimize well you're gonna go through characters quickly. But lucky for me the DM doesn't know as much as I or have the resources. But I am terrible at mechanics. So anyway, the DM loves to throw things at us that we know but he adds things to hinder the poor casters. He's against spell casting though he allows it. He also hates summoning. I had a wizard 5, demonologist 10, Fiend-blooded 1. Well just got tired of being left out of battles. He always finds ways and theres nothing I can do. 3 sessions I've just sat there. So I'm switching characters. Anyway, as the group doesn't have a real tank persay I thought about building one. We have people who can tank real well, but they don't focus on it. Basically I want to throw something into this as kind of a revenge bit. As the DM likes to say it's the DM versus the Players. Anyway it's 16th level. If you have any other builds that are unique (as I like unique stuff) they are welcome as well. There is no actual job lacking in the party. So I'm free for whatever. And templates and just about any race is welcomed. But here's my idea. I don't really want to wear armor. So I went with a non-armor build. Oh and I'm evil Race: Tibbit (For the other players sake- they liked my Jimmy before) 1-Battle Dancer- DCv1 (For Cha to AC) 2-Monk- Feat Kung-fu Genius (Int to AC) 3-Monk- For Evasion (Gotta make it hard to hit me) 4-Ninja- PHB2 (For Wis to AC)- I gotta check that though. 5-Paladin of Tyranny 6-Paladin of Tyranny- for Divine Grace- Gotta love the Cha bonus to saves 7-Sorceror- for Mage Armor and Shield 8-Psion- (Specifically for the Spectral Savant or I wouldn't use it) +4 LA for Spectral Savant (For the huge boost in AC) +4 CR for Chosen of Bane (For the +10 to cha and +4 to wis which boosts even higher) Now I realize Battle Dancer requires chaotic alignment. But moving from chaotic doesn't make you lose anything. So that's just a story bit which is why it's first level. I believe Ninja and monk AC bonus' would stack as Monk would no longer use Wis as ability to add to AC do to Kung Fu genius. But if not I would use Swordsage and point out the typo bit. And take out ninja. Also we don't play with the exp drain for multiclassing. In the end I really want to get rid of Spectral Savant (though those immunities are very nice) and chosen of bane without damaging my AC increase. We also use the gold we get per level in DMG. So I have 250,000. Which below are the items. Cloak of Cha +6- 36,000 Headband of Intellect +6- 36,000 Gloves of Dex +6- 36,000 Periapt of Wis +6- 36,000 Bracers of Armor +8- 64,000 So let me know. But if you have another build that will help deal with a DM who loves to break his own rules, that's great too. And also stretch to 20th level is fine as well. Edit- Oh and we are going by the 28 point system. |
| #2aftercrescentApr 15, 2008 13:09:24 | Get a belt of magnificence +6 (+6 to all stats) 200,000gp. Also, get into Fist of the Forest (CC) to add Con to AC too. |
| #3tshernApr 15, 2008 13:11:55 | That hardly is a tank. You've got AC, but nothing forcing your enemies to attack you. Moreover, you are easy fodder for HD-dependant spells like Blasphemy. There are a lot better choices for high AC and tanking. Try this: Cloistered Cleric 1/Swordsage 2/Paladin of Tyranny 2/Ur-Priest 4/Contemplative 6 Get Extend spell free from Planning domain, use magical location for Iron will and make sure you have Practiced spellcaster (Ur-Priest). Use Divine metamagic (persistent) for amazing buffing. With right domains (Spell and Animal perhaps? Time is great too.) you ought to have a nice selection of possibilities. Using Beads of Karma your AC could look like this: 10 +23(natural) +13 (dex)+ 6(circumstance)+ 6(armor)+ 9(wisdom)- 1(size)= 63 And that is not trying too much. Only Greater mage armor, Shapechange (Pit fiend), Divine agility and Holy star active. Plenty of room for improvement and other buffs like Divine power. Never underestimate the power of 9th level spells. Edit: Missed the part talking about your DM hating casters. Anyway, I would rather focus on being better at combat than being unhittable. If they can't hit you, but you do no harm to them, you will be utterly useless. |
| #4kyotoApr 15, 2008 13:15:23 | Ok yeah I forgot to mention and I was about to add it, I was going to get the feat Goad from DCv1. By the way, what's CC? And unless I lose the Spectral Savant I can't use con since I don't have any. Edit- We have plenty of hard hitters. Which is why I'm not worried about it. I want to take the focus off of them. |
| #5hsienApr 15, 2008 13:20:19 | Swordsage 2 or 3 gives Wis to AC as well, Monk and SwSage AC bonus stack Take levels for that and use feat for something other then Kung Fu genius, For extra save bonuses, and if have feats available go Blackguard to addt'l boost to saves, iirc this will also stack with paladin's save bonus. Evasion doesn't make it harder to hit you, it only affects spells with reflex saves. Hexblade will give you Mettle, basically evasion for spells that give fortitude saves. CC is Complete Champion, with the evil build Fist of Forest may not be available |
| #6aftercrescentApr 15, 2008 13:27:55 | fist of the forest does not have a non-evil req ![]() |
| #7kyotoApr 15, 2008 13:31:09 | Sweet. Yeah, I'll need to get Complete Champion cause I don't think I have it. Though I probably do. And I know Evasion is specifically against area spells which is why I wanted it. And yeah I just realized it is better to get 1 really high stat added twice then 2 mediocre stats added. But it depends. It does free up stat points though which is good. Edit: Yeah I need to seriously rethink about this. I calculated at about 95 AC after I was fully done, but yeah I can't get hit, but what's the point if I can't return the favor. Even if the rest of the party can dish out the damage. I am still the weakest. Hmmmmm. And the calculations was approximate and was probably off a bit. |
| #8dralnuApr 15, 2008 13:59:38 | Dont bring up the monk + sws ac stacking argument ... seriously... You will probably want a higher level in one spellcasting class just because spells are awesome and it would be nice to make your DM eat it with a spellcaster who is unhittable. I personally like Abjurant Champion to increase your AC by 10 if you take all five levels, that will limit you to being good aligned though (for Greater luminous armor which gives an effective +12 ac before abjurant champion. Divine grace from pally will help against spells, but keep in mind grappling will still murder you, so try to get a ring of freedom of movement. Grappling killed my lvl 12 sorcadin with an AC of 49 (damned gargantuan green dragon crushing...) |
| #9aftercrescentApr 15, 2008 14:08:41 | One decent thing about an insane AC that you can contribute is being a target. Provoke AoO left right. Drop prone, stand up, move, do things that require concentration. Whatever you can do, do it. Eating up opponents AoO allows your allies to pull some other maneuvers off more easily. ymmv |
| #10jetstrike3000Apr 15, 2008 14:35:53 | Heres my build for you and can be really great if played right. Human Fighter 1/Rogue 1/Wizard 1/Cleric 1/Binder 6/Anima Mage 1/Scion of Dantalion 1/KoTSS 1/Tenebrous Apostate 1/Major Bloodline 2 EBL=23 Netting 5 vestiges IIRC or if you believe that bloodlines work on all future classes Major Bloodline 7/Fighter 1/Rogue 1/Wizard 1/Cleric 1/Binder 1/Anima Mage 1/ Scion of Dantalion 1/Tenebrous Apostate 1/KoTSS 1 EBL=40 netting 10 vestiges... as for what you can do well almost anything... I reccomend this thread for the capabilities of the build http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=784085 But thats just my 2 cents I wouls suyggest binding Geryon + Balam + Focalor + Amon + Cabiri + Andras + Paimon + Malphus + Haures you've got 2 X 2d6 area effect gaze attacks which need not be activated, lightning strike every round for 3d6 + [(BL - 5) / 3] X d6, and a fiery blast for BL X d6 every 5 rounds. Balam's Cunning is useful in any build and Fogalor's Sadness is neat too, particularly since you'll want to be in the center of the enemy when you bind the gaze attack vestiges. Cabiri gives you a 3/day Fireball, and Divination as the spell every round, making for some nice caster-emulating ability, and the 1/2 Vile damage (although better on NPCs) combined with the Divination abilities lets you know if you are going to face an enemy Cleric anytime soon. ANdras and Paimon net oyu +8 to str. Malphus and Haures get you invis as well as alot of suddent strike based on your EBL which would be 11d6 damage for up close. IIRC. All in all from a blaster stand point ur looking at 4d6 worht of gaze atack lightning strike for 14d6 and a fiery blast every 5 rounds for 40d6... that like 200+ damage on average however a 5 round average would be less. but honestly not alot is gonna live through that... If you could get a second action you could use the fireball as well... You could also drop Haures for orthos for a 40d6 cone ref for half. |
| #11kyotoApr 15, 2008 14:50:08 | One decent thing about an insane AC that you can contribute is being a target. Provoke AoO left right. Drop prone, stand up, move, do things that require concentration. Whatever you can do, do it. Eating up opponents AoO allows your allies to pull some other maneuvers off more easily. ymmv One thing that I was just told is the AC I was pulling out is useless as at a certain point only nat 20's will hit anyway and anything that can hit above my AC would kill me. Aka Deities. So for our campaign the AC I had calculated by 20th (which was around 104 or something) was useless. So dropping certain things is ok. Spectral Savant gives me many immunities as well though. Like death effects, mental effects, drains, and things like that. For those who don't know it's near the end of Complete psionics. I also thought about using Elan and psion or wilder for the PP which provides great damage negation but the DM doesn't allow the Enhanced Resiliance feat. |
| #12bonzaiApr 15, 2008 15:20:48 | I threw a gladiator tournament for my players the other week. One of the players came up with a build that was something like: Dwarf Half Golem (6 limbs replaced). He then loaded up on grafts. His build involved Barbarian/Frenzied Berserker/Dwarven Defender/Deep Warden. 1st, as a Deepwarden, he got to apply his Con to AC (he wore no armor). Half Iron Golem gave him a +11 to natural armor, and +4 con for each limb, for a total of +24 to Con, and a total of +23 to Ac from that. Then add in Dwarven Defender, with the stance that adds a +4 con, and a +4 Dodge bonus, to add in another +6. Then add in a graft that gave him a +2 to con, and his +2 con from being a Dwarf, and you get another +2 to AC. So far that is an AC of 41. Now add in your base Con with your skill raises. Assume at least a base Con of 16, with 5 raises, and a Manual of health for another +5 to con, and you get another bonus of +8 to AC, for an AC of 49. He had a way through his feats and rage to improve his Ac further to get an AC of 54. This is nothing huge... except that he wore an anti-magic torque. This creates an anti-magic field in a 10ft radious around him. His grafts and golem abilities aren't affected. He also has DR15/+2. This means that anyone trying to attack him will have thier weapons suppressed, and unable to overcome the DR. Overall a nasty combo. |
| #13kyotoApr 15, 2008 16:02:13 | I threw a gladiator tournament for my players the other week. One of the players came up with a build that was something like: lol well that +2 for DR doesn't matter. Might as well have been 15/-. lol. The anti-magic fields are so annoying. Last time, the group beat 5 casters because one of the players who was a caster centered anti-magic field on him then went next to them lol. The the rest of the group took them out. |
| #14kyotoApr 16, 2008 10:51:08 | Ok so there are a couple of things. Cloistered Cleric is in what book? and what book is Contemplative in? This is what I got changing just a little bit from my build. 1- Battle Dancer (Cha to AC) 2- Monk (Wis to AC) Passive Way varient 3- Monk (Evasion) 4- Swordsage 5- Swordsage (Wis to AC) 6- Paladin of Tyranny 7- Paladin of Tyranny (Divine Grace- Cha to saves) 8- Psion (For Spectral Savant) +4 Spectral Savant +4 Chosen of Bane Stats Buffed- Str and Con are not added due to being incorporal from Spectral Savant. Dex-8(base)+2 (Race/ +4 cat)+8 (points)+2 (SS)=20/22+6(Gloves of Dex)=26/28 Int-8(base)+2(SS)=10 Wis-8(base)+10 (Points)+4 (Level points)+2(SS)+2(Bane)=26+6(Periapt of wis)32 Cha-8(base)+10 (Points)+4(SS)+10(Bane)=32+6(Cloak of cha)38 AC Unbuffed- 10 (base)+5(dex, Cat +6)+16(SS)+1(size, +2 cat)+11(battle dancer)+8(Monk)+8(Sword Sage)=59/61 AC Buffed- 10 (base)+8(dex, Cat +9)+19(SS)+1(size, +2 cat)+14(battle dancer)+11(Monk)+11(Sword Sage)+8 Bracers of Armor=82/84 BAB is low though I off set that by.... +1 Master worked Short Sword with Dragon Bane (since we're fighting dragons) and Brilliant Energy. I also took the weapon finesse feat so that I can add my dex to attack since I have no strength. Here's my feats. Feats- 1- Weapon Finesse 3-Improved Feint 6-Goad DC 32 Monk 1-Combat Expertise monk 2-Improved Trip Psion 1-Psionic Weapon Sword Sage- Weapon Focus I took the Monk Varient in UA. Stances for Sword Sage- Flame's Blessing, Stone Foot Meanuvers-Shadow Blade Technique, Stone Bones, Vanguard Strike, Burning Blade, Counter Charge, Wind Stide, Distracting Ember. My choice of skills will be high. I gain a skill focus for Bluff with the monk varient. So though I will not be dealing the most amount of damage, I'll probably be hitting the most often as all my attacks resolve to touch attacks. Edit- Oh yeah and my saves- fort-0(Swsg)+3(monk)+3(Paladin)+0(Psion)+0(BD)+14(cha)=20 Ref-3(Swsg)+3(monk)+3(Paladin)+0(Psion)+0(BD)+8(dex)+14(cha)=31 Will-3(Swsg)+3(monk)+3(Paladin)+2(Psion)+0(BD)+11(Wis)+14(Cha)=33 Immunities- Aging effects mind effecting spells and abilities poison sleep effects paralysis stunning disease death effects any effect that requires a for save unless it works on objects or is harmless Critical Hits nonlethal damage ability damage to physical ability scores ability drain energy drain fatigue exhaustion death from mass damage +4 against turning |
| #15tshernApr 16, 2008 10:59:42 | Cloistered Cleric is from the Unearthed Arcana and can be found in the SRD as well. Contemplative is from Complete Divine. I'd still drop both templates you have.... |
| #16kyotoApr 16, 2008 11:59:38 | I agree about dropping those, but.... not sure really what to replace them with. I've never been much of a cleric player. So that stuff is really new to me. This is what I lose if I drop the templates. Bane- Not a huge deal if I drop this. The drop in AC isn't terrible and if I use the +4 for 4 class levels I should be able to become more combative and won't need Goad. -10 cha -4 wis Drops AC by 14 Lowers Goad DC by 5 Immune to aging effects Spectral Savant- -6 cha -2 wis -2 int -2 dex Drops AC by 13 Lose following immunities- mind effecting spells and abilities poison sleep effects paralysis stunning disease death effects any effect that requires a for save unless it works on objects or is harmless Critical Hits nonlethal damage ability damage to physical ability scores ability drain energy drain fatigue exhaustion death from mass damage Lose the 50% miss chance Losing both though I could look to druid for 5 levels to gain the Wild Shape ability then go Master of Many Forms for 3. Which allows me to shape change into Large Giants, and monstrous humanoids. Also change as a move action. Or look at something else.... plus I have to then look to str and con for stats. |
| #17kyotoApr 16, 2008 15:05:44 | Ok so Chosen of Bane is out. Though it was awsome to see such a high AC, it wasn't really needed. I worked to improve my combat a bit more. Added Fighter 2 then blackguard 2. So saves greatly improve, then I also used my defense to my advantage for fighting. Took out Goad, and added Deft Strike, Riposte, combat reflexes, deadly defense, dodge. (Dragon Compendium) Race Tibbit- +4 dex, -10str (as cat), +2 dex, -2 str +1 size bonus to AC, +2 (as cat) (Complete Psionics) Spectral Savant HD- d12s AC- 5+cha mod Resistance of Cold/Electricity 10 +4 turning resistance Immune to mind effecting spells and abilities, poison, sleep effects, paralysis, stunning, disease, death effects, and any effect that requires a for save unless it works on objects or is harmless. Immune to Critical Hits, nonlethal damage, ability damage to physical ability scores, ability drain, energy drain, fatigue, exhaustion, or death from mass damage. Cannot be raised or resurrected unless willing No strength score, con score +2 dex, +2 Int, +2 wis, +4 cha +8 hide, listen, move silently, search, sense motive, and spot LA +4 1- Battle Dancer (Cha to AC) 2- Monk (Wis to AC) Passive Way varient 3- Monk (Evasion) 4- Swordsage 5- Swordsage (Wis to AC) 6- Paladin of Tyranny 7- Paladin of Tyranny (Divine Grace- Cha to saves) 8- Psion (For Spectral Savant) 9- Fighter 10- Fighter 11- 12- Items +Bracers of Armor +8 (64,000) +Gloves of Dexterity +6 (36,000) Vest of Escape (5,200) +Cloak of Cha +6 (36,000) +Periapt of Wis +6 (36,000) +Weapon- Short Sword(20) -Master worked (300) -+1 -Bane +1 -Brilliant Energy +4 (72,320) Gold=880 Stats Dex-8(base)+2 (Race/ +4 cat)+8 (points)+2 (SS)=20/22+6(Gloves of Dex)=26/28 Int-8(base)+2(SS)=10 Wis-8(base)+10 (Points)+4 (Level points)+2(SS)=24+6(Periapt of wis)30 Cha-8(base)+10 (Points)+4(SS)=22+6(Cloak of cha)28 AC= 10 (base)+1(size,+2cat)+9(dex,+10 cat)+10(wis monk)+10(swordsage)+9(cha battle dancer)+14(SS)+8(bracers)=63 Feats- 1- Weapon Finesse 3- Improved Feint 6- Deft Opportunist 9-Deadly Defense 12-Riposte Monk 1-Combat Expertise monk 2-Improved Trip Psion 1-Psionic Weapon Sword Sage- Weapon Focus Fighter 1-Combat Reflexes Fighter 2-Dodge Saves- fort-3(monk)+3(Paladin)+9 (cha)+3(fighter)+3(black)=21 Ref-3(Swsg)+3(monk)+3(Paladin)+8(dex)+ 9(cha)=26 Will-3(Swsg)+3(monk)+3(Paladin)+2(Psion)+11(Wis)+9 (Cha)=31 Edit: Realized a mistake. I need still Cleave, Imp Sunder, Power Attack..... so maybe not black guard. But I made some suggestions. Edit: Also realized, no strength score, no power attack, no black guard. Edit: I am also trying out the build that was suggested to me. |

| #19tshernApr 16, 2008 17:12:49 | Just asking: How high an armor class you think you need? If keeping it in the 60s is not keeping you safe, then the DM is doing something in a very odd manner. For feats, I recommend Spell focus (evil) and Iron will. They make it possible to actually enter Ur-Priest. Use Cloistered Cleric to grab Extend spell via Planning domain and magical location for Iron will. Divine metamagic (persistent) is good as well. Replace the Monk level with something more useful, it doesn't give you all that much. |
| #20kyotoApr 16, 2008 17:34:13 | Hahaha! Well our DM likes to adjust things constantly so that no matter who we face it will almost kill us. 60's basically means you'll get hit probably 25% of the time. 70's means you'll get hit pretty much never. The DM makes things up as he goes. I never claimed he was a good DM. And he always has them level 20 or higher. We do well enough to end them, but we can't fight another battle afterwards because we are drained. We almost had to fight an army of Trolls. We are constantly in the presence of Dragon Flights. Every badguy is immune to just about everything. With the last bunch our Mystic Theurge had to sacrifice himself to kill them. Basically putting himself in danger so that the casters will be useless (antimagic field centered on himself). Basically Magic is severely hindered which is why I was trying to stay away from magic as much as possible. My last character was a summoner and well the dm found ways to keep him from fighting period. Like anti-summon areas. Edit- He makes sure no ones safe but when we don't optimize we die in moments after starting. |
