| #3eyebreakerMar 04, 2014 20:01:48 | DMG? DOH! Damn it only says what level they are. Guess I could always just make my own up. How hard can it be to make 4 1st level fighters and a 2nd level leader...
Page 106 of the DMG talks about the Leadership feat. Do you need a leadership score to hire a few fighters to guard your wagon, horses & a couple dogs?
Also the modifiers for a leadership score mention / list having a familiar or animal companion gets a -2 to their leadership score total? Shouldn't it be PLUS 2? It shows that they can take care of another being besides themselves and treat it well? Or does the cohort look at them as "competition"? |
| #4Tempest_StormwindMar 05, 2014 9:50:02 | This is getting annoying. It's the second thread you've created where the answer is right in front of you in a core book, and you're apparently not reading it.
Page 105 details hirelings, who are people who you hire to perform a task. All you need to hire them is gold.
As for "mercenaries", it makes it quite clear that they are members of the Warrior class, including cavalry and leaders.
The Leadership feat provides cohorts and followers, who are people who travel far and wide to offer their services to you because of your renown. Followers are not hirelings, and you do not need Leadership to pick up hirelings. Furthermore, strictly speaking, characters without the Leadership feat have no Leadership score, but since all that the Leadership score controls are your cohorts and followers, which aren't available without the feat at all...
The separate question involving reduction of Leadership score when you've already got a treasured ally is never explained.
Additionally, if you want more involved mercenary rules, you can look into the Arms & Equipment Guide, which expands things up to hiring full-on mercenary companies and mercs of different races, classes, and equipment. It's 3e (so it makes references to weird things like the Animal Empathy skill and based numbers around things like a +2 Skill Focus) but it by and large translates quite well. I have, however, not once found a need for it, as the DMG rules cover every situation where I'd want to have hirelings around anyway. |
