How can I add dex to melee damage?

I want to build a fighter/wizard/eldritch knight.

I was hoping to use a finesse weapon and add dex to damage as well. But I dont want to PrC out to champion of Corellon, or the Bo9S stuff. I want to keep the simple build, unless anyone has an awesome suggestion for leaving it.

Are there any feats or magic abilities that will let me add dex to melee damage? There wasnt much to go on in the add x to y thread.

The Shadow Blade feat in ToB allows a character wielding a finesse weapon to add their Dex mod as bonus damage on melee attacks. It's worth noting that this means you add both your Str and Dex to damage rolls.

Note that Shadow Blade does not apply to Finesse Weapons, only to Shadow Hand weapons, which is a limited list (Spiked Chain, Dagger, Sai, Siangham, Unarmed Strike, and possibly 1-2 more I'm forgetting). It also requires a Shadow Hand Stance as a pre-requisite, which requires you to take a level of Swordsage (that or spend three feats to get to it, as you can take a feat to gain a Stance but all Shadow Hand stances require at least one Shadow Hand maneuver, which would require another feat). A good Stance to take is the Assassin's Stance, which adds 2d6 Sneak Attack Dice.

FYI, you can take Martial Stance on it's own by using a Shadow Hand item to grab a 1st-level maneuver. Once you take Martial Stance, the stance qualifies for itself and the feat, and you can take off the item.

Thanks for the snark. If you had bothered to read my post, you would see that I did read through the x to y thread.

I am not opposed to Bo9S, but I dont have it.

I also know that some of the threads around here that are referenced are pretty old.

So I was asking if there was any new info, or something that I hadnt happened to have read.

Well how about the "New" X stat to Y bonus thread? That is pretty recent as it was added after 4ed.

Dum de dum Ignore the fact I linked the wrong one in my original Post, however the *New* X to Y is still in the Surreal Dex. No updates as far as Dex is concerned, sadly, but the Drow Fighters Variant which is in both lists does not require you to BE a Drow. See if that flies with your DM.

Does anyone know if the deadeye feat adds to ranged attacks only?

Even worse than that. Only works on ranged weapons which you have the weapon focus feat for, and you're within thirty feet of the target.

Yeah, the X to Y thread needs a more in-depth description of Deadeye, because it is rather lacking currently and Dragon Magazines are hard to find online.

Your (only) options for getting Dex to melee damage without a severe level dip are the following:

Take Swordsage 1 with a Shadow Hand Maneuver, Shadow Hand Stance, and the Shadow Blade Feat. This will grant you Dex to Melee Damage as long as you are using a Shadow Hand Preferred weapon (which level 1 Swordsage will also grant you Focus in), which notably includes Daggers, Unarmed Strikes, and Spiked Chains but not much else.
Equip the Shadow Hands equipment to gain a Shadow Hand Maneuver, take the Martial Stance to gain a Shadow Hand Stance, take a feat to gain Shadow Blade. See above.
Take the Martial Study Feat to gain a Shadow Hand Maneuver, take the Martial Stance feat to gain a Stance, take the Shadow Blade feat. See above.
Feycraft will NOT do it, it merely makes a weapon act as if it has automatic Weapon Finesse, adding Dex to Hit, not to Damage.
Your final option is being a Lesser Drow (+0 LA) and taking one level of Drow Fighter, which gets +2 Init and the ability to add Dex to damage when hitting Flat-Footed Foes (but loses proficiency with heavy armor and tower shields and cannot gain those from any multi-class or anything besides the appropriate feats).

Shadowblade is a really good option...... the dip is mildly annoying but ToB classes are a pretty good dip in general espically later in the build such that the maunvers you get are high level.

Additionally, note that the Spiked Chain, one of the best melee weapons around, is both finessable and shadowbladeable...... pretty awesome.

It doesnt sound bad, but I dont have Bo9S

What is a good way to mitigate the low hp from having several wizard levels in these builds? (besides the con item)

It is really a non-issue, but if it makes you feel better, cast False Life. Or take the Improved Toughness feat.

I agree with Phaedrus, in that, it's a non-issue. With the right buff choices, you'll only rarely be hit and often be unaffected by the damage when you are.

In addition to False-Life, there's Heart of Earth, for up to 30 temp hitpoints.

So, I should concentrate on having mirror image and other mitigating buff spells on at all times?

It's not that hard. By mid-levels (10-12 or so), you can have all your hr/lvl buffs potentially up all the time (or, effectively so) with a fairly minimal investment in spell slots/cash. Combine with a handful of immediate and/or swift buffs to throw up in the first round or two and some decent gear, and you're pretty set. The most fun ones are when you can use 2 separate 24hr duration buffs in the same spell slot by burning an extend rod on them. You shouldn't waste standard actions in combat on self-buffing, though, generally, unless that buff is necessary for the fight, is a group buff, or saves/gives you extra actions later. But there are lots of things you can reasonably cast 1st thing in the morning, or as you enter the dragon's lair, that can last through multiple encounters.

Honestly, I wouldn't take a level of fighter. Abjurant Champion, Swiftblade, Jade Phoenix Mage, and several other classes make excellent gish types, and obviating the need for a level of fighter is, generally, almost always worth it.

Need weapon proficiencies? Otherworldly, Tiefling, Militia.
