How does Ultimate Magus manipulation work?

May 31, 2010 13:09:54 Alright, honestly, I'm starting this thread because (apologies) I don't think I understand some of the things you can pull with the Ultimate Magus. The two feats I've seen thrown around as essential to toying with it are Practiced Spellcaster to manipulate class advancement and Precocious Apprentice for early entry. I'm looking at making an Ultimate Magus Sublime Chord, and was wondering how exactly this setup works for this build. Also, any advice in general for making a UM/SC combo?

May 31, 2010 13:20:00 Problem wit UM: it advances not at every level both casting classes, which makes it impossible to get 9th level spells by lvl 20. At some levels, it advances the casting level of the class whose caster level is lowest.

Trick: take the feat practiced spellcaster and apply it to the class you have lowest casting levels in. Now the spellcasting class that you have least levels in, has a higher caster level. Ergo, when UM raises spellcasting of the class with the lowest casterlevel, it raises the one in which you have most levels of spellcasting, making it possible to cast 9th level spells pre-epic.

Precocious apprentice let's a 1st level caster learn 1 2nd level spell that can be cast once/day with a spellcraft check, iirc. As far as I know, there are rulings that said that shouldn't let one qualify for a prestige class that has "cast 2nd level spells" as a prereq, is a bit cheesy anywayz.

Mhhh... re-reading all this, I guess I'm explaining this pretty aweful, so let me direct you to the UM handbook

May 31, 2010 14:34:04 Oh, and another thing I forgot more specific to this build: Sublime Chord says that the caster level for spells you cast as an SC is your SC level plus the levels of another arcane spellcasting class. Does that technically allow you to "double dip" Ultimate Magus and get crazy high caster levels?
