| #1ashernMar 27, 2010 20:53:33 | Hey guys, back with yet another query. I've been looking around at everything, and barring some really wierd tricks, I've noticed you don't tend to get that many 9th level spells in effective/combo builds, unless you're going full progression sorc/focused spec wiz. My question is this, is there a build/class combo out there that can get more than 6 9th level spells per day before ability mods? (that of course being the sorc/focused specialist max number, and the number of several double progression builds I've seen.) Cheers! |

| #3lormadorMar 28, 2010 6:20:06 | I am reminded of the Red Wizard (insert shameless plug) handbook revealing a complicated (and dubious) method by which a 10th level wizard could get 34 9ths prepared. |
| #4ashernMar 28, 2010 9:02:18 | Hmm, not familiar with the fiendish codex books. I'll look around, thanks! Heh, I play a Red Wizard in another homegame, and yeah, it's technically possible... but it's more of a one time thing with months of preparation, well at least it will be until I get to around level 15ish. I was just looking to see if there was a way to get more with a simple wizard build. (Also, that handbook is AMAZING! Thanks so much for putting it together!) |

If I remember correctly, in theory, the spells per level is all but "limitless". The problem is this class can actually be too powerful, so I use some "capping" limitations on the taint score per level to limit the upward number of spells and power of the spells per level. Domain Wizard UA (and/or generalist Wizard variant RoTW?) can add a bit of spells per level to any build, particularly if they are allowed to stack. |
| #6ashernMar 28, 2010 21:34:29 | Well, Tainted Scholar does jack your spells per day... but basically by giving you a stat that it's calculated off that can easily rise above your intelligence. That's powerful, but unless you're willing to get really close to utter madness, you're only going to get one extra spell per day. *goes to check chart, scribbles in notes* I take it back. With a depravity of say... 55, that gives us 65 for the high ability mod chart... thus giving us wow... yeah. That can give you 4-5 extra 9th level spells per day from a high effective stat. Not to mention if you're jacking corruption up it will drive your spell DCs through the roof. Cool find, not sure if I could sell my DM on taint mechanics though... |
| #7j2.504Mar 28, 2010 21:48:04 | I'm away from books, but it has a couple nice features: 1) You can self inflict one of your taint scores just by casting spells (at least tainted spells, possibly all), which makes the 1/2 of your taint grow without an external source. 2) I can't remember correctly, but I believe it is even more incredible with Theurge builds. I have a couple older posts on the subject, but I believe it makes all your casting dependent on the one score, so an archivist/wiz/tainted scholar/theurge type gets the most benefit. I could be wrong on this - been a while, but that's why I had to put caps based taint score vs. bonus spells per level. Good bye MAD, hello Tainted Scholar? |
| #8j2.504Mar 29, 2010 20:21:10 | Here's a couple of my posts on the Tainted Scholar subject, including using it with Theurge, and setting a cap/limitation so it's not so broken. There's also a link by another poster in Excel or similar format that builds a table of bonus spells based on your taint. It shows a simple breakdown of how many bonus spells you get based on your score. It's a useful gadget in and of itself: forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=1925... forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?p=1924... |
