How optimal is Incantatrix without Persistent Spell?

That seems the main source of the class's power. Without Persistent, is it still at least a seeming must-have?

Oh no! I just have to quicken my buffs! The Horror!

It's still the best arcane PrC, yeah. At the very least, you can extend your Hour and 10m and 1m per level buffs for free.

There's a lot more there than free persist.

You know that thread that's been on page one for most of today? The one where the guy says that he's finding Quicken to be better than Persist?

Incantatrixes use Metamagic Effect on already-cast spells; Quicken doesn't work.

Reach, Chain, and Reach+Chain do. Extend does. You can even hit someone with a spell and move up to them, then next round Chain it to all their friends. Or apply Repeat just as a spell is about to run out (Extend + last-second Repeat = 4x duration).

Instant Metamagic, man. But even so, what you're saying applies as well.

Instant Metamagic is nice--VERY nice--but with errata it can't go over the limit of what you can normally cast, and it's 2/day by 10th. Metamagic Effect is the one you get lots of uses of. And use Cooperative Metamagic on your friends' spells, too.

The capstone ability and the bonus metamagic feats are the highlights for me. I like playing mages that use metamagic. E.g., Empowered, Maximized, Split, Twin Enervation/Prismatic Ray. Incantrix makes things a lot easier for such a feat intensive build.

Oooh, I didn't know they'd Errata'd that. If they're going to fix that, why the **** don't they issue one for DMM, too?

That's the 3.0 version. The 3.5 version is, ridiculously, even *more* powerful--significantly so.

No, because it's not availible for free and it'd be illegal to do so. If you want to get the book (PGtF) illegally, I'm sure you can figure out how to do that yourself.

According to the Prestige Class Index it is in Player's Guide to Faerûn, page 61.

The variant loremaster im devising could (potentially if you had insane intelligence) do the free metamagic thingy 5 times per day by the of the class.

Chain spell is my vote for use of Metamagic effect.

As Logicninja mentions - quicken doesn't work (which makes sense since Metamagic effect is used after the spell is already cast without metamagic)

However, Chain spell can pass on your buff goodies to all your buddies.

The Spellcraft roll isn't as ridiculous as persistant (though in most cases - still quite high).

And - with a single level dip into Archmage - you can make all your touch spells into reach spells - thus qualifying them all for those free chainings.

Though you shouldn't limit yourself to just one level of Archmage, of course. Mastery of Shaping and Elements are just too juicy!
